TYPES OF AQUACULTURE

• a hatchery operation which is producingfertilised eggs, larvae or fingerlings

• a nursery operation which is nursing ofsmall larvae to fingerlings or juveniles,and/or

Inland Fish Farming

• The share of Fish farm in In-land fish production is lessthan 20% because of lack of information to farmers ontechnology. The total number of Farms is around 7,000 ofwhich 4069(58%) are in Punjab, 2348 (33%) in Sindh, 391in NWFP, and 92 in other areas of Pakistan. Existingfarming methods are not developed because of variousproblems stretching from production to marketing.Farmers have very little information with regard to therequirements of feed, medicine, seed, etc. Marketing andstorage pose serious problems. Hygiene is not maintainedand proper freezing facilities are missing.

• The fish-processing sector of Pakistan is in far better shape than thefishing sector. but still the processing sector had not kept upgradingwith the International technological advancements, the change indemand patterns and customer preferences for which the country paidthe price in form of losing market share and lower average unit prices.

• Except for Blast freezing plants (so called processing units) there is nomodern value added fish processing plant producing products likebreaded buttered shrimps, fish fingers, fish cakes, fish paste, fish sauceor surimi products. Three major categories of exports oriented fishprocessing activities mechanical means in Pakistan are freezing,canning and fish meal production. In traditional sector curing is themost popular method of fish preservation method which accounts forconsiderable quantities of finfish, fish maws and shark fins.
