CDC Mission

• CDC works 24/7 to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same

• CDC conducts critical science and provides health information that protects our nation against expensive and dangerous health threats, and responds when these arise

• The CDC is one of the major operating components of HHS, the Department of Health and Human Services – (AHRQ, CDC, CMS, FDA, HRSA, NIH, SAMHSA)

• CDC consist of Centers, Institutes, and Offices (CIOs) that allow the agency to be more responsive and effective when dealing with specific public health, safety or security threats

CDC SBIR Program

Overview

• The Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program was established by Congress in 1982 to provide opportunities for small businesses to participate in R&D, to increase employment, and to improve U.S. competitiveness

• SBIR provides seed funds (grants and contracts) to domestic small businesses to engage in Federal Research/Research and Development (R/R&D) that has the potential for commercialization

• The Office of the Associate Director for Science (OADS) manages CDC’s SBIR Program and works with CIOs to make determinations as to where SBIR funds would best be used to support high quality, high impact SBIR projects

88

CDC SBIR Program

Mission and Goals

• Meet Federal research and development needs

• Increase private-sector commercialization of innovations derived from Federal research and development funding

• Stimulate technological innovation

• Foster and encourage participation in innovation and entrepreneurship by socially and economically disadvantaged persons

Reasons To Seek SBIR Funding

11

• Provides seed funding for innovative technology development and engaging in partnership with CDC’s public health mission!

• Not a Loan; No repayment required

• Provides recognition, verification, and visibility for your SBC/company

• Helps provided leverage in attracting additional funding or support post SBIR award (e.g., venture capital, strategic partner)
