THE CLIP FIRST STARTS OFF WITH A MASTER SHOT OF A CORRIDOR, SWIFTLY FOLLOWED BY THE USE OF SOUND THROUGH AN OVERPLAYED NON DIEGETIC SOUND TRACK OF A TRUMPET. THE USE OF SOUND COULD INDICATE THAT THE CHARACTER COULD HAVE THEIR OWN SOUND TRACK. THERE IS THE USE OF CINEMATOGRAPH WITH FIELD OF FOCUS ON THE CORRIDOR. THE USE OF MISE-EN-SECEN ON THE CORRIDOR THROUGH LOW KEY LIGHTING. THESE THREE DIFFERENT USES OF TERMINOLOGY IS USED TO HEIGHTEN THE SENSATION OF TENSION WITHIN THE CLIP OF THE VIEWER. AFTER THE USE OF SOUND THE OUT OF FOCUS MAN ENTERS THE SHOT, THERE IS NO SOUND AS HE WALKS DOWN THE CORRIDOR.

AS THE CHARACTER IS WALKING TOWARDS THE CAMERA HE BECOMES IN FOCUS. IT IS ONLY TO THE LAST SECOND WHERE YOU ARE ABLE TO SEE HIS FACE THIS HAS BEEN DONE SO THAT THEY CAN REVEAL THE CHARACTERS IDENTITY ALLOWING THE AUDIENCE TO START ASKING QUESTIONS. SUCH AS WHY IS HE THERE? WHY IS HE BEING SO QUIET AND WHO IS HE PERUSING. THE CAMERA THEN USES A TRACKING SHOT FOR A COUPLE OF SECONDS SHOWING JAMES ON THE MOVE, THIS THEN SWIFTLY TRANSITIONS INTO AN OVER THE SHOULDER SHOT.

THIS IS DONE SO THAT THE PISTOL IS IN THE CENTRE OF THE SCREEN. THIS WOULD MEAN THE AUDIENCE ARE DRAWN TO HIM AND WHERE THE GUN IS POINTING. AS THE PISTOL IS RAISED SO THAT HE CAN CLEAR THE ROOM IT WOULD BE BUILDING UP TENSION OF THE INTRO AS THEY WOULD BE EXPECTING A GUN FIGHT TO BE IMMANENT. HE NEXT USE OF EDITING IS THE SHOT OF JAMES FROM THE FRONT THIS IS SO THAT THE AUDIENCE CAN SEE HIS CLOTHES, THIS USE ID MISE-EN-SCENE IS USED SO THAT IT WOULD SHOW THE AUDIENCE THAT HE IS AN IMPORTANT PERSON THROUGH HIS EXPENSIVE SUITE IMPLYING THAT HE IS GOOD AT WHAT HE DOES. AS HE PUSHES OPEN THE DOOR THERE IS A LIGHT USE OF SOUND THROUGH THE NON-DIEGETIC SOUNDTRACK TO BUILD UP TENSION. THE EDITING USED AT THIS POINT IS A CUT TO A POINT OF VIEW SHOT OF TWO DEAD PEOPLE ON THE FLOOR.

• THIS AND THE USE OF SOUND WILL HEIGHTEN THE SENSATION OF ANTICIPATION OF THE VIEWER. THE CINEMATOGRAPHY OF THE CAMERA IS STATIONERY AND PANS ACROSS THE ROOM FOLLOWING JAMES THIS WOULD IMPLIES TO THE AUDIENCE THAT HE IS IMPORTANT AND ON A MISSION THROUGH HIM MOTIVATING THE EDITING. THE ROOM OPENS UP AS HE CLEARS THE REST OF THE ROOM, THIS IS DONE SO THAT THE AUDIENCE CAN SEE THE MIS-EN-SCENE OF THE ROOM. THIS IS DONE SO THE DIRECTOR CAN REVEAL MORE TO THE AUDIENCE AND BUILD UP TENSION. THE WAYS THAT THEY HAVE DONE THIS WOULD BE THROUGH THE LIGHTING OF THE ROOM AS IT IS VERY DARK. THE HALF-CLOSED BLINDS REVEAL THE DUST IN THE ROOM AND RONSON WHO IS SITTING IN A CHAIR.

THE SHOT AT THIS POINT WOULD SUGGEST THAT JAMES IS IN A PHYSICALLY BETTER STATE THAN RONSON. JAMES THEN SPEAKS FOR THE FIR TIME IN THE CLIP TO SAY THAT HE IS “DOWN AND THAT HE NEEDS AA MEDICAL EVAC”. THIS WOULD SHOW THE AUDIENCE THAT HE IS TALKING TO SOMEONE THROUGH AN EARPIECE. THIS WOULD LEAD THE VIEWER TO THINK THAT THEY ARE PUTTING A LOT OF MEN INTO AN OPERATION. THERE IS THEN THE VOICE OF A WOMAN SAYING “WHERE IS IT, IS IT THERE”. HE THEN REPLIES SAYING THAT IT ISN’T THERE. WHICH IS FOLLOWED UP WITH THE WOMAN SAYING “ARE YOU SURE”. THIS MEANS THAT THE NON-DIEGETIC VOICE HAS TO REMIND HIM. THIS MEANS THAT THEY ARE DESPERATE TO OBTAIN THE OBJECT. WHEN HE SAYS THAT IT ISN’T THERE HE THEN SAYS GIVE ME A MINUTE. HE THEN GOES TO HELP HIM. THROUGH THE CONTINUOUS USE OF CUTS SUGGEST THAT THIS IS THE CLIMAX OF THE SCENE. THE SHOT THEN CUTS TO AN OVER THE SHOULDER CLOSE UP ON RONSON. THIS ALLOWS THE VIEWER TO SEE HIS CONDITION. AS THE USE OF CROSS CUTTING IS SHOWN TO REVEAL THE FACIAL EXPRESSIONS OF THE VIEWER THE NON-DIEGETIC SOUNDTRACK COMES BACK IN THE BACKGROUND, AGAIN TO BUILD UP THE TENSION THIS IS ALSO DONE THROUGH THE NVC OF THE TWO CHARACTERS. THE VOICE THEN COMES BACK IN A DISTRESSED TONE SAYING THAT “THAT WE DON’T HAVE THE TIME, LEAVE HIM”.

AT THIS POINT THERE WOULD BE A GREAT DEAL OF SYMPATHY FOR RONSON. TO BUILD ON THIS EMOTION THERE IS A CINEMATOGRAPHY OF A LOW ANGLE USED TO SHOW THE FACE OF RONSON AS JAMES WALKS AWAY IN PURSUIT BUT HAS ONE GLANCE BACK. THE TENSION THE BUILDS BACK UP AS HE THEN LEAVES THE ROOM AND THEN BEGINS TO LEAVE THE BUILDING VIA THE STAIRS. THE CAMERA ANGLE USED AT THIS POINT IS A HIGH ANGLE LOOKING DOWN AT HIM AS HE WALKS AWAY TO THE BRIGHT LIGHT IF THE DOOR. THIS LEAVES THE AUDIENCE TO THINK THAT JAMES ONLY FOCUSES ON THE MISSION.

THE MUSIC THEN CHANGES AGAIN FOR THE FINAL TIME TO SOMETHING MORE UPBEAT AS HE PUTS AWAY HIS PISTOL AND GOES OUT ONTO THE STREET. THIS MUSIC AND THE PUTTING AWAY OF THE GUN WOULD ALSO SHOW THE AUDIENCE THE NAIVETY, THIS IN ITSELF WOULD MAKE THE AUDIENCE FEEL UNEASY AS THEY CAN SEE SOMEONE WHO HAS A GUN WALK AMONG THE PUBLIC.
