N.B. Degas’s work in clay and wax began as early as 1865, and by 1880 he worked with it almost exclusively. He did not have any ofthese works cast in bronze during his lifetime, perhaps a result of his perfectionism as he “did dream of having some cast in bronze, as heonce confessed to Maillol, but he was apparently reluctant because bronze cannot be retouched.”1 Degas frequently used the femalenude as the subject of his sculptural work, and in these pieces he explored elements of movement and form. Mary Cassatt once wrote “Ihave studied Degas’s sculptures for months. I believe he will live to be greater as a sculptor than as a painter.”2

This work was modeled between 1896 and 1911. Between 1919 and 1921 the Hebrard Foundry cast seventy-two of the seventy-threebronze sculptures that Degas produced. Each was marked with a number (1 to 72) and twenty copies of each, marked with letters Athrough T, were designated for sale (an additional unmarked cast was reserved for the foundry and another for the heirs of the artist).

N.B. Crite was an African-American Bostonian artist who wasknown for painting everyday scenes in Roxbury and South Endneighborhoods. Crite considered his role as an artist to be “astory teller of the drama of man. This is my small contribution—to tell the African-American experience—in a local sense, of theneighborhood, and in a larger sense, of its part in the total humanexperience.”1

Crite studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Bostonin the 1930s, and graduated with a bachelor’s degree fromHarvard University Extension in 1968. His works are in thepermanent collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston,Museum of Modern Art, the Smithsonian Institution, the FoggArt Museum, and the Addison Gallery of American Art, amongothers.

N.B. Gaspar studied at the Art Academy and the Industrial ArtSchool of Budapest, Hungary, under Korosfoi Kriesh Aladar andUjvary Ignacz. He immigrated to the United States at the age oftwenty-one, settling in Illinois. He worked as a muralist inSpringfield and Chicago, completing forty murals depicting theCentury of Progress.1
