SJPS Chromebook Rental Program  

 2015­2016  

 Students at St. Joseph High School are eligible to rent a Chromebook for use in 

conjunction with the district’s BYOD initiative.  Chromebooks will be rented on a yearly or quarterly basis.  Students and parents must complete the appropriate paperwork and comply with the terms of this policy in order to participate in the program. 

 There are a limited number of devices for rental, and will be assigned on a first come, first serve basis.  Use the sign­up form online found at:  http://sjschools.org/about­saint­joseph­high­school/byo­device 

 Device Specifications:  Chromium OS, 2GB RAM, 11” screen, USB, HDMI.  Rental Costs:  $25 per marking period to be paid in full on or before the first day of the quarter                                                               OR  $75 per school year to be paid on or before the first day of school  Payments can be made in the high school office ­­ re: Chromebook Rental­­ and must be cash or check made payable to St. Joseph Public Schools.   The guidelines for using a Chromebook rented from SJPS are outlined below:  

● Chromebooks should be carried in a padded backpack or separate carrying case. ● Chromebooks should be brought to school each day (fully charged) and taken home 

each night. ● Chromebooks should not be left unattended and should be securely locked in the 

student’s locker when not in use or attended to by the student. ● Chromebooks are the property of SJPS and shall not be defaced with stickers, ink, or 

other decorative items.  Students may purchase a protective shell if desired. ● Chromebooks will be used in conjunction with the student’s SJPS Google Apps for 

Education (GAFE) account, which will be explained at the beginning of the school year. ● Digital content on Chromebooks is subject to inspection at any time by SJPS staff. 

Students are expected to follow the rules outlined in the district’s AUP. 

Chromebook care is the responsibility of the student.  Damage due to negligence will result in charges issued to the student as outlined below:  

● A charging cord will be issued with the Chromebook.  The cost of a replacement charger is $50.  It is recommended that the chargers be left at home and kept away from pets. 

● Chromebook screens are delicate.  Students should not carry the Chromebook by the screen and the device should be used on a flat surface and never shoved or wedged into a locker or backpack.  A broken screen may cost up to the replacement cost of the device, which could be up to, but not exceed $250. 

● Chromebooks should be kept away from liquids at all times.  Damage due to liquids may cost up to the replacement cost of the device, which could be up to, but not exceed $250. 

● All other damage costs will be assessed at the time of inspection by the IT Department at SJHS.   

 Chromebooks shall be inspected on a quarterly basis for damage and content.  Students MUST return to the media center on the dates outlined below for a mandatory maintenance check. Failure to comply with this rule will result in the student’s internet account being suspended.  

● MP 1:  Week of October 26th ● MP 2:  Week of January 11th ● MP 3:  Week of March 21st   ● MP 4:  Week of May 23rd 

 Chromebooks must be returned at the end of the school year following the final exam period. Failure to return a Chromebook will result in a charge of $250 assessed to the student, and if not paid, the student’s diploma will be held.

Student Agreement for Chromebook Rental   By entering into a rental agreement with SJPS, I __________________________, agree to the following terms:  _________Option 1:  I will pay $25 per marking period to rent a Chromebook.  _________Option 2:  I will pay $75 for the entire school year to rent a Chromebook.  Please write your initials next to each item below, indicating you agree: 

 ________ I will keep the Chromebook in a protected, secure location. ________ I will bring the Chromebook to school everyday, fully charged. ________ I will keep food and beverages away from the Chromebook. ________ I will not attempt to repair the Chromebook and will report damages immediately. ________ I will use the Chromebook in ways that are appropriate for education and within the  

      guidelines of the SJPS Technology Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) ________ I will not deface the Chromebook with decorations, ink, or stickers. ________ I will file a police report in case of theft or damage caused by fire. ________ I understand I am responsible for the cost of any damages that occur. ________ I understand I must have the Chromebook inspected quarterly by SJPS. ________ I understand that the Chromebook is the property of SJPS. ________ I will return the Chromebook and charger at the end of the rental agreement. ________ I understand that failure to abide by these guidelines could result in my SJPS  

      Internet privileges being revoked, as well as the opportunity to rent a Chromebook         in the future.
