SIZZLE What’s Hot in Assessment
IE’s Assessment Staff Enjoys Visits with International and National Guests INTERNATIONAL VISITORS On Wednesday, September 26th, the Institu-tional Effectiveness Assessment staff enter-tained two visitors from Chulalonghorn Business School in Thailand. Dr. Assa-daporn Nuchpray-oon and Photipong (Job) Chanawangsa have been working to secure AACSB accreditation for their college. After a meeting in Atlanta, the two decided to stop by Kentucky to visit the Office of Assessment for further discussions about program-wide assessment and the use of Blackboard Outcomes as a system of record. Dr. Nuchparyoon and Mr. Chanawangsa met with Leah Simpson and Daniel Cleland of the Office of Assessment, and Nicholas McClure, a Blackboard operating systems programmer at the University Of Kentucky. The five discussed the various ways that the University Of Kentucky uses Blackboard to manage assessment information and sug-gestions for handling such a large task at Chulalonghorn Business School. Dr. Nuchparyoon and Mr. Chanawangsa were introduced to Simpson at the elfAsia conference held in Beijing, China in April, 2012. Simpson and Chanawangsa led a
discussion about their two very different uses of the Black-board Outcomes system.
NATIONAL VISITORS This past September, staff from National Intelligence University (NIU) travelled from Washington D.C. for a three day visit with assessment staff in Institutional Effec-tiveness. NIU is currently in the process of preparing Blackboard Outcomes to handle all of their needs in stu-dent learning assessment, strategic planning and program review. Dan Cleland, who handles technical support for Outcomes, hosted the guests. The topics covered include the Outcomes institutional hierarchy, custom form tem-plates, access control, custom report design, the Black-board database structure, user support and much more. Drs. Anderson, Carvalho, and Stoll spoke at the 2012 SACSCOC Annual Meeting, held in Dallas, Texas in December about collabo-rative, contractual, and consortium relationships (Comprehensive Standard 3.4.7). Institutions are very creative and develop new configurations of academic programming for a variety of reasons, including international partnerships. All types of partnerships with domestic or international entities are increasing in number. Often institutional officers overseeing any type of partnership need clarity in understanding the accreditation implications. While imagi-nation leads to creative new configurations, accreditations require-ments urge caution, deliberation, appropriate up-front investments of time and resources, and above all, quality assurance. The speakers concluded their presentation by discussing the process the University of Kentucky is taking to apply these concepts through its successful international programming.
By Dr. Heidi M. Anderson, Associate Provost for Institutional Effectiveness & SACSCOC Liaison Dr. Susan Carvalho, Associate Provost for International Programs Dr. Marcy Stoll, Vice President, Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACS)
Visitors (continued from Page 1) NIU visited previously for one day in April with the Office of Assessment staff, IT and various people around campus involved with student learning assessment. National Intelligence University is located in Washington D.C., at Defense Intelligence Agency Headquarters with locations within the National Security Agency and the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency. It is the only insti-tution of higher education that allows students to study and research Top Secret/Sensitive Compartmentalized Information. NIU provides undergradu-ate and graduate studies for federal employees in the intelligence communi-ty, the military, reserves, law enforcement, and National Guard.

Recognizing Exemplary 2011-2012 Student Learning Outcomes Plans The Office of Assessment would like to recognize programs/units whose 2009-2010 Annual Assessment Student Learning Outcomes Plans met expectations on all categories of the SLO Plan rubric. In November 2012, 24 members of the University Assessment Council (UAC) evaluated 290 SLO reports that were submitted into Blackboard Outcomes. Criteria reviewed included method(s) used, benchmark/target, results, analysis, and needed improvements.
