SIROLL Drives SINAMICS S120 for SESMTwo-step migration solution for separately excited synchronous machines (SESM) for former Master Drive solutions.

SIROLL Drives SINAMICS S120 for separately excit-ed synchronous machines gives our customers the opportunity to upgrade their old first- or second-generation drive system to the state-of-the-art SINAMICS technology with a small maintenance budget. The reliable Siemens motors stay in place, and the previous spare parts agreement is reset. The customer has the choice to either revamp the whole system or to start by upgrading the existing control-retaining power equipment with reliable Master Drive components.

Your challenge:

Rapid developments in the market place high de-mands on steel producers. A single day of shutdown brings with it steep income losses and may cause a delay in delivery dates. Only highly available systems are capable of strengthening your company in such a challenging environment. This requires a high per-formance from the entire plant, and also relies on a sufficient spare parts supply and available service support and system knowledge. That is especially true for the spare parts supply for rolling drives.

The first generation of Siemens low-voltage, sepa-rate ly excited synchronous machines was produced from 1996 to 1999/2001. These systems operate with the earlier SIMADYN D with PT20G control equipment for auxiliaries and excitation and with SITOR power assemblies for the field supply. Produc-tion of most components of the first generation has been discontinued, and after-sales service support is no longer available. The phase-out of the second generation SESM with Master Drives begins in Octo-ber 2011. Therefore, it is high time for a sustainable migration strategy.

Our solution:

As your reliable partner, Siemens is fully aware of your needs to modernize your mill drives. Therefore, we have developed customized modernization pack-ages that help you stay competitive.

Siemens’ migration strategy for separately excited synchronous machines offers a two-step modern-ization.

In the first step, the control system of the auxiliari-es and the Master Drives control, as well as all ex-citation and ET stations, are replaced with state-of-the-art components that are part of the SINAMICS/SIMOTION and SIMATIC S7 family. The communi-cation interface will be adjusted accordingly.

In the second step, the Master Drives power section will be replaced with the SINAMICS S120 solution.

Alternatively to a step-by-step migration, Siemens offers a full transition from the first generation to a full SINAMICS solution.

The new absolute single-turn encoder will be read in via the SSI telegram inter-face. When the migration is complete, the entire system will run on up-to-date SINAMICS/SIMOTION control components that convert the system to state-of-the-art technology.

Lean control interfaces

The number of communication interfaces will be reduced by focusing and stream-ing most functions in the SIMOTION con-trol unit. The interface to the automation will be reduced to one channel, and it will be preequipped for later automation upgrades. This reduces the complexity of the system and prepares it for fast and simple modernizations in the future.

Migration step two

In the second migration step, the power section of the drive system will be re-placed by the new S120 power section, which upgrades the entire converter to the latest version of the SINAMICS family.

Relevant systems

The following systems can be migrated:

First generation (1996 to 1999/2001):

CU2 drive control board T300 technology board SITOR-based excitation SIMADYN PT20G auxiliary and excitation control

 ET200U motor box

The following systems can be revamped:

First generation system/ second generation (2001 to 2008):

CUVC drive control board T400 technology board S7-300 SIMOREG DCM 6RA70 excitation Master Drives power section

Migration step one

The first step in the migration of a first-generation drive system is an upgrade of the control systems. The entire auxiliary system will be replaced and controlled by a SIMOTION control unit. The technologi-cal functions of the drive system will be integrated into the SIMOTION control.

A new, state-of-the-art ET200S replaces the ET200U. SINAMICS DCM 6RA80 will replace the old excitation. The communi-cation to the automation will be simpli-fied, leaner, and adjusted accordingly.

Advantages of SIROLL Drives S120 for SESM:

Improved availability A secure spare parts supply and service support guarantee long-term plant availability.

Safety-integrated functions The new SINAMICS S120 offers new safety-integrated functions.

Investment protection Existing motors can remain in place.

High reliability The new control system requires fewer hardware components, and so less repair and maintenance.

Absolute single-turn SSI encoder SSI telegram interface for deter-mining rotor position angles is fast and fail-safe.

Recover space The new auxiliary cubicles require less space than the previous system.

Lean communication Communication interfaces are reduced to a minimum, which in turn reduces complexity and in-creases operator understanding and handling.
