Subtle v. Gross

Sukhum- Operating in a way you can not

experience it with your physical senses, the

experience is so slight or delicate that to

describe it would almost do it injustice.

What is Maya

Maya has two forms

1. Is physical and can be experienced with

the 5 senses and is the Physical

manifestation of God called Surgun (With

all forms)

2. The sukhum form is your thoughts

ਰਜ ਗਣੁ ਤਮ ਗੁਣ ਸਤ ਗੁਣ ਕਹੀਐ ਇਹ ਤਰੇੀ ਸਭ ਮਾਇਆ ॥.

Raja gun; Tamo gun and

Sato gun, are all called

Maya. 1123

3 qualities of Maya

Sato gun compassion,

contentment, humility,

tolerance, moral control

(WATER)

Tamo gun Sexual behavior, Anger,

Greed Attachment, Pride

(FIRE)

Rajo gun Hopes Wishes, Desires

Anxiety ,Worries (PAVAN)

What causes our suffering?

ਅੰਦਰਰ ਸਹਸਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਹੈ ਆਪੈ ਰਸਰਰ ਧੰਧੈ ਮਾਰ ॥ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਸੁਤੇ ਕਬਰਹ ਨ ਜਾਗਰਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹ ਰਪਆਰII

Within the self is the pain of doubt;

engrossed in worldly affairs, they are killing

themselves.

Asleep in the love of duality, they never

wake up; they are in love with, and attached

to Maya. 508

ਇਹੁ ਮਨੂਆ ਅਰਤ ਸਬਲ ਹੈ ਛਡੇ ਨ ਰਕਤੈ ਉਪਾਇ ॥ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਦੁਖੁ ਲਾਇਦਾ ਬਹੁਤੀ ਦੇਇ ਸਜਾਇ ॥

This mind is very powerful; we cannot

escape it just by trying.

In the love of duality, people suffer in pain,

condemned to terrible punishment.33

ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਏ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥

Through the love with duality, no one has

found peace. 123

Duality

• Root cause of Pain and Suffering

• Is the thing that separates us from God

• Leads us in to Maya

• When we think we did something

• Triggered by Desire

• Fortified by Attachment

• Forgetting God

• Failure or seeing the family as taught by Gurmat

• Gurmantra is the cure for Duality

We can never escape

Maya while in Maya.

It wraps all around us. 12

ਮਾਇਆ ਰਿਰਿ ਸਹਜੁ ਨ ਊਪਜੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ॥ Within Maya, the poise of intuitive balance is

not produced. Maya leads to the love of

duality. 68

While the body is rooted in Maya, the Mind

has the ability to escape. Gurmat teaches us

how to free this Mind.

ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਭਿਰਹ ਰਬਖੁ ਮਾਇਆ ॥ In the love of duality, the mortals wander

through poisonous Maya. 366

ਹਮ ਕੀਆ ਹਮ ਕਰਹਗੇ ਹਮ ਮੂਰਖ ਗਾਿਾਰ ॥ ਕਰਣੈ ਿਾਲਾ ਰਿਸਰਰਆ ਦਜੂੈ ਭਾਇ ਰਪਆਰੁ ॥ ਮਾਇਆ ਜੇਿਡੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਨਹੀ ਸਰਭ ਭਰਿ ਥਕੇ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ॥ I have done this, and I will do that - I am an

idiotic fool for saying this! I have forgotten

the Doer of all; I am caught in the love of

duality. There is no pain as great as the pain

of Maya; it drives people to wander all

around the world, until they become

exhausted. 39

ਗਰਰਬ ਅਟੀਆ ਰਤਿਸਨਾ ਜਲਰਹ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਿਰਹ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ Filled with arrogance, they burn with desire;

they suffer in the pain of the love of duality.

ਰਤਿਸਨਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਣੀ ਸੁਤ ਬੰਧਪ ਘਰ ਨਾਰਰ ॥ ਧਰਨ ਜੋਬਰਨ ਜਗੁ ਠਰਗਆ ਲਰਬ ਲੋਰਭ ਅਹੰਕਾਰਰ ॥ ਮੋਹ ਠਗਉਲੀ ਹਉ ਮੁਈ ਸਾ ਿਰਤੈ ਸੰਸਾਰਰ ॥੧॥ The enticing desire for Maya leads people to

become emotionally attached to their children,

relatives, households and spouses.

The world is deceived and plundered by riches,

youth, greed and egotism.

The drug of emotional attachment has

destroyed me, as it has destroyed the whole

world. ||1|| 61

ਰਤਨ ਤੰੂ ਰਿਸਰਰਹ ਰਜ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਏ ॥ 160

Those who are in love with duality forget

You.

ਸੋ ਐਸਾ ਹਰਰ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪੀਐ ਮਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਜੁ ਮਨ ਕੀ ਰਤਿਸਨਾ ਸਭ ਭੁਖ ਗਿਾਏ ॥ 89

Chant that Name of the Lord, O my mind,

which shall drive out all hunger and desire

from your mind.

ਰਿਟੇ ਰਜਨ ਕੇ ਕਪੜੇ ਮੈਲੇ ਰਿਤ ਕਠੋਰ ਜੀਉ ॥ ਰਤਨ ਮੁਰਖ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਊਪਜੈ ਦੂਜੈ ਰਿਆਪੇ ਿੋਰ ਜੀਉ ॥ ਮੂਲੁ ਨ ਬੂਝਰਹ ਆਪਣਾ ਸੇ ਪਸੂਆ ਸੇ ਢੋਰ ਜੀਉ ॥੩॥

Those who wear white clothes, but have

filthy and stone-hearted minds, may chant

the Lord's Name with their mouths, but they

are engrossed in duality; they are

thieves.They do not understand their own

roots; they are beasts. They are just

animals! ||3|| 751

ਦੂਜਾ ਭਰਮੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਰਦ ਜਲਾਏ ॥

Doubt and duality are burned away by the

Word of the Guru's Shabad.

ਰਜਨੀ ਇਕ ੁਪਛਾਰਣਆ ਦੂਜਾ ਭਾਉ ਿੁਕਾਇ ॥

Those who recognize the One renounce the

love of duality. 38

• Count how many times do you say “I did this”

• Count how many times you think about doing

something for your family in the areas of

wealth, youth greed and ego.

• Make a list of 5 things you are attached to.

• See everyone as God, list an example where

this did not happen.

• Do simran with Family 12 mins x 2
