Silanox ΙΟΙ· It's a whole new technology·

Silanox 101 is more than a new super-hydrophobic performance chemical from Cabot. It's a whole new technology. It changes the way water generally behaves, by introducing a property called water-shedding that suggests dozens of new product ideas. It also offers totally new routes to thickening, free-flow, absorption, emulsification and reinforcement.

motorized marbles. Even when the substrate is tilted as little as 1 ° off the horizontal.

Here's how it works. Silanox 101 is a silane-modified silicon

dioxide particle. The silane renders the silicon dioxide extremely hydrophobic. The enormous surface area of these silicon dioxide particles bristles with literally millions of microscopic, hydrophobic projections. On a ^<?Γ super-hydrophobic coating formulated with Silanox 101, water makes only minimal contact. It rests on a barrier formed by the tips of the tiny Silanox 101 projections and non-wettable air capillaries between them. Cohesive force rolls the water up and it rolls off as frictionless spheres. Coating and substrate stay dry.

This means you can develop paper products and packaging, textiles and non-woven disposables that are truly impervious to water. (Immerse a Silanox 101-coated paper in water, and a wall of air forms around it. Just try to get it wet. )

To produce super-hydrophobic, water-shedding textiles, coat only the surface with Silanox 101 — not the entire fabric bulk. Treat 100-mesh nylon with Silanox 101, and it will support water to a height of 2V4 ".

Give metals a higher level of water repellency and protection. Add only 5% Silanox 101 to powdered polymer coatings, and they can be cured into thin, discontinuous super-hydrophobic films. In vehicles, aircraft or appliances, develop water-shed coatings that protect surfaces and structures vulnerable to corrosive condensation. Super-hydrophobic coatings also promote drop-wise condensation.

Cured concrete releases easier, surface defects are minimal when wood, metal, fiber or

plastic forms are coated with Silanox 101. Air bubbles that would otherwise pit the surface escape through the coating's air layer.

To combat oil spills, coat standard absorbing agents with Silanox 101. Treated straw and waste paper float high and dry longer—oil clean-up is more efficient and effective. In water purification systems, capture trace amounts of oil or organic contaminants using liquid absorbing media coated

Silanox 101.

Convert aqueous systems into millions of tiny discrete droplets that behave like powder. Water

becomes a powder when mixed with 10% Silanox 101 (right) — and with nutrients added, it serves as a unique germination media (left).

Flower and vegetable seedlings can be removed totally intact from the soft, non-caking powder — and transplanted

without hurting a single root hair.

Silanox 101 changes water-based systems into powders, easy to handle and disperse. For example, germinate flower and vegetable seedlings in a pure, powdery water-in-air emulsion (90% water, 10% Silanox 101 by weight). Air trapped by the Silanox 101 provides oxygen for growth. The most delicate seedlings can be removed, transplanted intact down to the last root hair.

Hygroscopic and organic powders that tend to cake or agglomerate become free-flowing with Silanox 101. Only 0.1% by weight can bring liquidlike flowability to fertilizers, fragrances, industrial

flow with the addition of only 1% Silanox 101 (right). The Silanox 101 particles act as tiny ball bearings,

allow host particles to roll past each other.

Pick up slicks with water-shy, oil-hungry absorbers. Untreated straw (left) gradually absorbs water and sinks,

is more effective.

chemicals, powdered polymers. Find uses for sands, soils and clay minerals that reject water. Use Silanox 101 as a water-resistant thickener in inks, greases, sealants — it maintains viscosity in organic systems, won't migrate to water.

Silanox 101 provides excellent reinforcement, is easily dispersed in specialty plastics, elastomers, adhesives, silicone rubbers. Its high absorptive capacity makes it an ideal dry powder carrier for organic liquids — from plasti-cizers to pesticides. Use it as a water-in-oil emulsifier for exceptional stability in cosmetics, skin lotions, industrial sprays.

Help prevent corrosion, with super-hydrophobic coatings. Water drop is placed on thin, discontinuous film of cured epoxy, electrostatically applied as dry powder to panel

(top left) — and on panel similarly coated with blend of epoxy and 5% Silanox 101 (top right). Evaporated drop causes rust spot on epoxy-only coated panel (bottom left), while on panel with epoxy and Silanox 101 no rust develops (bottom right).
