Sika-Trocal Single Ply RoofingThe Sika-Trocal ConceptIntroductionThe achievement of zero defects on site is criticalnot only to ensuring the project is completed ontime and within budget, it also ensures awatertight building that will have stable thermalperformance at roof level. With the increasedfocus on the environment, and particularly thereduction of carbon emissions, maintainingthermal performance over time is critical.

The purpose of this brochure is to highlight ways inwhich the Sika-Trocal concept can help theconstruction industry achieve zero defects. The Sika-Trocal Concept utilises lightweight, flexible and easyto install single ply membranes to provide a range ofnew and refurbishment roofing systems that areideally suited to today’s environmentally consciousfast track construction programmes.

Comprising a range of single ply membranes that canbe attached in a number of ways, the Sika-TrocalConcept is suitable for most forms of flat, pitched, curved or even vertical roof surfaces.Central to the Sika-Trocal Concept is the Type Smembrane, first manufactured in Germany in 1962.Since then Sika-Trocal roofing membranes have beenused in every type of environment throughout theworld.

Introduced to the UK in 1972 under the brand nameTrocal, the Sika-Trocal Concept has been at theforefront of the single ply roofing industry.

In the 1970’s the company was amongst the first toachieve a British Board of Agrément Certificate forsingle ply membranes. Updated numerous timessince, that document is still used to satisfy therequirements of the Building Regulations today.

In the 1980’s the company introduced Field Engineers,a service team that not only train the Sika-TrocalLicensed Contractors but are also responsible forsigning completed projects off for guarantee.

In the 1990’s Sika-Trocal’s oldest client, Tesco, carried out air leakage testing on its warehouses andstores. The results achieved were, and continue to be,significantly better than the building air tightnesslevels required by Building Regulations ApprovedDocument L (Part L) 2006.

The new millennium saw the integration of Trocal intothe Sika Group, a £1.59 billion turnover supplier ofmaterials to the construction industry active in morethan 70 countries, and Sika-Trocal can proudly claimits place as part of the largest single ply roofingmanufacturer in the world with 4 factories in Europe, 2in the Peoples Republic of China and one in the USA.

Benefits The roof can accommodate almost any thickness

of thermal insulation, achieving ‘U’ values inexcess of 0.10 W/m²K being possible. Thisenables insulation in other areas of the buildingto be offset against the roof or to significantlyimprove the thermal efficiency of the building, thus reducing carbon emissions.

Thermal bridging caused by metallic elements issimply dealt with through correct detailing andthe use of plastic tubes combined with metallicfasteners. Eliminating thermal bridges reducesheat loss and subsequent carbon emissions.

Air leakage targets can be met with simpledetailing; in fact buildings with Sika-Trocal roofshave been routinely tested over the past 15 yearswith results better 5 m3/h/m2 at 50 Pa beingregularly recorded.

Internal volume of the building is minimised, contributing to carbon reduction by cuttingheating and cooling costs.

Roofs can be very light in weight, saving on thesupporting structure and reducing environmentalimpact.

Sika-Trocal Single Ply RoofingThe Sika-Trocal Concept

Complicated or large plan areas are easier tocover, reducing design and installation costs thusenabling more finance to be allocated to theproductive areas of the building.

Items of plant, such as air conditioning andmachinery, can be accommodated on a flat roof. This provides more useable floor area.

Access onto, and movement across, flat roofs isgenerally easier than alternatives. This can avoidthe need for scaffolding, ladders or hoists tocarry out simple maintenance tasks.

Flat roof areas can be used for amenity purposesby creating a terrace or green roof, enhancing theworking environment and improving the buildings‘green’ credentials.

Sika-Trocal Single Ply RoofingRoofing System OptionsGeneralSika-Trocal roofing membranes can be installed in avariety of new build and refurbishment roof, bothwarm and cold. Each installation option offers its ownbenefits to the specifier and client, with lowmaintenance and low whole life cost beingdemonstrated consistently across all applications.

StandardsThe UK has recently seen the first introduction ofstandards directly relevant to single ply roofingmaterials with the launch of BS EN 13956: 2005Flexible sheet for waterproofing. Plastic and rubbersheets for roof waterproofing. Definitions andcharacteristics.

Whilst this standard offers a multitude of test methodscovering many aspects of a products performance andproperties, currently there is no guidance provided onwhat constitutes a meaningful, satisfactory level.

Therefore, the use of independent product certificationfrom a notified body, such as the British Board ofAgrément, remains critically important. CurrentAgrément Certificates cover all Sika-Trocal single plymembranes.

Certificate number 95/3092 covers Sika-TrocalType S and SG.

Certificate number 91/2649 covers Sika-TrocalType SGK.

Certificate number 94/3060 covers Sika-TrocalType SGmA.

DurabilityBritish Board of Agrément Certification provides astatement of durability for the products covered. Inthe case of the Sika-Trocal Type S family ofmembranes, which have been used in Great Britainsince 1972, the BBA have recognised theirdemonstrated longevity. Consequently the BBA havegiven the Sika-Trocal Type S, SG, SGK and SGmAmembranes a stated life expectancy ‘in excess of 30years’.

Mechanically Fastened InstallationsThe majority of Sika-Trocal installations aremechanically fastened; this is primarily due to thespeed of installation of the Sika-Trocal Disc System.

The Sika-Trocal Disc System consisting of a 80 mmdiameter flat plate manufactured from Sika-Trocallaminated metal and a fastener suitable for thesubstrate. The significant benefit of the Sika-TrocalDisc System over other conventional systems is thatthis single fastener and plate combination is used tomechanically attach the thermal insulation andmembrane to the roof, saving the expense of twoattachment systems.

Once the Disc System is installed the Sika-Trocalmembrane is simply unrolled over the substrate andthe discs welded to the underside of thewaterproofing. Individual membrane rolls areoverlapped by a minimum of 50 mm and weldedtogether to create a watertight roof.

The 2006 revision of Part L of The BuildingRegulations demands that the thermal bridgingcreated by the use of all metal fasteners be minimisedand/or reduced. To assist the project meet thisdemand the fasteners used to restrain the Sika-Trocalmembrane should be a combination of plastic tubeand metallic fastener elements appropriate to theapplication. To assist Sika-Trocal LicensedContractors and specifiers, ensure that suitableproducts are being used, Sika-Trocal publish aguidance document on the Internet(www.sika.co.uk/uk-home/roofing/roofing_download_centre.htm)

and publish a list of suppliers who have met theserequirements.

Sika-Trocal Single Ply RoofingRoofing System OptionsAdhered InstallationsIn situations where a Sika-Trocal mechanicallyfastened or ballasted membrane is not suitable for aparticular project then the adhered Type SGK can offera viable alternative solution. Typical examples of thisare swimming pools and laundry rooms, where thehigh humidity requires the use of high cost stainlesssteel fasteners, renovation of existing failed roofs, concrete decks and where fasteners cannot be visibleinternally. The substrate requirements for use withadhered membranes are different to those of the otherattachment methods, notably the selection ofinsulation boards and preparation and treatment ofany existing roof surfaces. All specifications need tobe agreed with Sika-Trocal before commencinginstallation.

The Sika-Trocal adhered system uses Type SGKmembrane, which has an integral polyester fleecebacking that helps mask the appearance of insulationboard or timber deck joints. The Type SGK membraneis adhered to the substrate using Sika-Trocal TypeC300 polyurethane adhesive.

Where thermal insulation is used it is important thatsuitable insulation boards are used to ensurecompatibility between the adhesive, the face and theinsulant core.

When bonding to an existing substrate the quality andsuitability of the substrate is critical to the success ofthis system and the weakest lamination in any buildup must always be considered.

Any substrate receiving an adhered membrane shouldbe smooth and free of sharp objects like chippingsand proud screw heads, the membrane should be ableto achieve intimate contact with the substrate.

Green and Ballasted InstallationsA ballasted roofing system will normally be surfacedwith gravel or pavers and with the membrane laidabove the insulation. In some cases when creatinggreen roofs the membrane may be located under theinsulation in an ‘inverted’ situation. Note that invertedconstructions will require an insulant specificallydesigned for exposure to moisture such as ExtrudedPolystyrene (XPS).

Sika-Trocal Type SGmA membrane is loose laid overthe substrate and fastened at the perimeters andaround penetrations prior to the installation of theballasting material, typically round washed stone, pavers or roof greening.

Roof greening systems are generally categorised asIntensive, Extensive or Biodiverse depending on thetype of planting used and the level of amenityrequired.

Intensive systems are heavy and utilise highmaintenance greenery such as shrubs, bushes andtrees.

Extensive systems use lightweight growing mediumsand sedum to provide a meadow like finish requiringminimal maintenance.

A Biodiverse system is generally specified to replicatethe natural habitat of specific flora and fauna.

Sika-Trocal Single Ply RoofingDesign & SpecificationFactors Affecting Roof DesignA great many factors can affect the performance ofany roof, including wind uplift, thermal and structuralmovement. General advice covering these key areasis given below, for project specific advice pleasecontact your local Sika-Trocal Area Sales Manager.

Wind uplift forces will put the roof membraneunder suction pressure and the attachmentsystem needs to be designed to resist theseforces.

Movement and stress between the individualcomponents of the roof buildup will be inducedfrom the structure, temperature cycling, shrinkage and settlement.

Increasing insulation levels isolate thewaterproofing from the heat sink effect of thedeck, creating severe temperature cyclingranging from -20˚C up to +80˚C. Sika-Trocalmembranes are designed to continue to workwithin these temperature ranges for many yearswithout detrimental affect to the performance.

Roof waterproofing needs to be flexible yetstrong, able to resist the cyclic structuralloadings, movement, temperature fluctuations, UVexposure and bacterial attack depending onwhether it is exposed or buried while retaining itsintegrity even at vulnerable points as upstandsand penetrations. With Sika-Trocal materials, thisis never in doubt.

The majority of single ply roofing projects areinstalled utilising mechanical fixings as themethod of restraint against wind uplift forces asis the case with Sika-Trocal Type S.

Sika-Trocal Advantages Sika-Trocal roof waterproofing provides flexibility

of design, construction and programming for newand renovation projects.

With new build projects, the lightweight nature ofthe Sika-Trocal Type S waterproofing combinedwith rigid plastic foamed insulation and profiledmetal decking can offer substantial reductions inthe amount of steelwork required in thesupporting structure.

When used on new build projects, the ability tolay air sealed metal decking that then provides avirtually waterproof umbrella, allows the groundworks to start early and proceed uninterrupted. This is a major advantage for fast track projectsin speeding progress on site.

The membrane is essentially loose laid whichprovides a level of separation from the surface ofthe substrate, which helps isolate the membranefrom damage caused by building movements.

Sika-Trocal details are remarkably simple andstraightforward thus making it one of thequickest and easiest single ply membranes toinstall.

Sika-Trocal is economical and can be installedquickly, easily and neatly to satisfactory aestheticstandards.

Sika-Trocal waterproofing has proved successfulin Europe and many different parts of the world.

 Sika-Trocal resists normal atmospheric pollution.

 Sika-Trocal will not rot.

Sika-Trocal Single Ply RoofingDesign & Specification

8|9

SpecificationThe range of Sika-Trocal roofing systems enables thespecifier to produce clear, concise specifications fornew and refurbishment applications.By using the Sika-Trocal NBS format specificationscan be written for almost any shaped roof, includingflat, sloped, vertical, curved, waveform or domed, andincorporating commonly used substrates, such asmetal deck, concrete and timber.

To assist specifiers there are a number of pre-formatted standard Sika-Trocal NBS specifications onthe Sika-Trocal internet site. These are in a PDFformat and are quick to download(www.sikaroofing.com). These standard and nonstandard details are ready for designers to use andmanipulate are required.

Where a more complex specification is required aSika-Trocal Area Sales Manager is available to assistin the creation of a bespoke specification, to locateyour local Area Sales Manager please check theInternet or contact Sika-Trocal on 01707 363846.

RenovationThe Sika-Trocal concept is ideal for the renovation ofexisting roofs that have reached the end of theirworking life. The lightweight nature of Sika-Trocalwaterproofing will generally permit the overlaying ofexisting roofs without the need to strengthen thestructure. The minimum additional weight imposed bya 1.5 mm thick membrane is only 1.9 kg/m2. Probablymore important is the ability of the sheet, when usedun-ballasted, to breathe entrapped water vapourthrough the actual membrane itself. This aids theprevention of blistering and delamination in the future.

The guarantee itself is issued to the Sika-Trocal Licensed Contractor, enabling it to follow thecontractual chain to the client.

MaintenanceSika-Trocal membranes require no maintenancethemselves. However, it is considered good roofingpractice to monitor the overall condition of the roofthroughout its life. Sika-Trocal recommends that theconstruction itself, along with associated parapetupstands, counter flashings and mastic seals, areinspected on a bi-annual basis. During theseinspections rainwater outlets, leaf guards and guttersshould be inspected and cleared as required.
