April 2014 President’s Message Many thanks to those who came out in predicted 90 degree heat for the Wistaria Festival on March 16 to serve in the Friends Booth in Memorial Park. Sharon Murphy recruited volunteers, set up and took down the pop-up, tables and chairs along with those who came to meet the public and spread the word. Other volunteers were: Margaret Quigley, Susan Gallagher, Darlene Traxler, Janet Emery, Beth Smith- Kellock, Helena Czepeic, Martha Troedson, Pat Alcorn and Barry Ziff. Thanks again to all of you. The most exciting thing happening for the May 3 and 4 Art Fair is the announcement by Chairs Janet Emery and Susan Gallagher that the City has approved the request to set up a Wine & Beer Garden for the two days of the Fair. This fun addition will hopefully allow the visitors to the Fair to spend more time in the park and a more leisurely stroll through the exhibits. The Board is still waiting for the final report for the Friends Wine and Cuisine Tasting Benefit in February, but preliminary figures find that there were 348 tickets sold, including the sold-out Premier Event, with the net income to be about $23,500. The best news is that Robert Newton has agreed to chair the event next year along with most of the committee that worked on the event this year. I’m looking forward to next year’s event. Hope to see you all at our annual Art Fair in May. Her “Wild & Tame” necklace, leather cuff bracelet and enamel earrings will appear on all post cards, posters, flyers, t-shirts and other promotional materials. Live Music will be featured throughout the weekend in the band shell and on the southeast lawn. Guests will enjoy an eclectic selection of music. Food Trucks will offer a variety of food and drinks for guests. Be sure to stop by the Wine & Beer Garden open Saturday, 1:00 to 5:00 p.m., and Sunday, 1:00 to 4:00 p.m., on the front lawn. This is the first year for the Wine & Beer Garden. We are asking you to consider volunteering in this area and are also asking for the use of “pop- ups” to help provide shade cover for attendees. Contact Susan Gallagher at [email protected] or Janet Emery at 626-355-6499 if you can provide a “pop-up” for Saturday and/or Sunday. The Friends of the Library will have a booth selling their famous sweet ‘quick’ breads as well as coffee in the morning. For the children, the Creative Arts Group has planned a butterfly making activity Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. This year we will again have a Silent Auction. So far, 38 artists have donated lovely, one-of-a-kind pieces for the auction which means you’ll have a chance to bid on some really beautiful artwork and support the Library. To Volunteer at the Friends booth, Friends Food booth, Silent Auction, Wine & Beer Garden or as an area Host or Hostess, please contact Fran Garbaccio at 626-355-6536 or [email protected] to let her know you can help. PUBLIC LIBRARY DIRECTOR FORUMLibrary Director, Carolyn Thomas, attended the Public Library Director Forum in Sacramento on February 25-26. All expens-es for the trip were funded by the California State Library. In-formation that is beneficial to the Sierra Madre Public Library is:• $5000 in State grant monies will be available to all public libraries in California to purchase books to support the Common Core State Standards which are being implemented in school districts throughout California. Also included is training for staff which will be held at the Anaheim Public Library on April 3.• Participation in the Edge Initiative, a toolkit for assessing technology services the Library offers to the community. Training, resources, and development of a project plan for improving technology services will be addressed in the training that began March 25.• Broadband Initiative to improve bandwidth to all public libraries is part of the Governor’s budget for the upcoming fiscal year. The intent is to connect public libraries to the CENIC (Corporation for Education Network Initiative) backbone and to increase bandwidth from1.5 mbps to up to a gigabyte.

LOCAL HISTORY REQUESTS UPRequests for information from our local History collection have greatly increased. This past month we had seventeen special requests. One very interesting request came from a television station in the Netherlands wanting information on Louis van Iersel. He was born in Holland, fought in the American Army in WW1, and later settled and lived in Sierra Madre. Louis was featured as the Grand Marshal in the 1976 4th of July Parade in town. We were able to provide photos and information on Mr. van Iersel to help support this project!

SPRING/SUMMER SOIREE AT SAVOR THE FLAVOR

Our friends from Savor the Flavor are just back from the annual West Coast Fancy Food Show in San Francisco and are excited to showcase new products they’ve brought back. They are off ering free private parties for interested groups during the months of April, May, and June. Groups of 15 or more will be invited to sample a menu of treats and 10% of any purchases they make will be donated to the organization hosting the party. The menu includes red and white wine; Karen’s favorite cocktail of fresh squeezed orange juice, pomegranate juice, and vodka; Kentucky bourbon teriyaki chicken; passion fruit salad; frog balls (dill marinated Brussels sprouts); Tuscany beer bread; green chili cilantro dip and veggies; French chocolate truffl es; walnut rye cakes with caraway; and cocomels (original and sea salt coconut caramels). The Friends would like to host a party as a fundraiser and need to know if we can assemble a group of at least 15 people to attend before we select a date. Please let Pat Alcorn know if you’d be interested in attending by emailing her at [email protected] om.

BEST USED BOOK SALE

This month’s review is byCatherine AddeThe Blood Sugar Solution by Mark Hyman

What CAN one eat and maintain good health? There seems to be so many confl icting reports today about this being good for you and then - no wait! – that’s not good for you anymore. It’s just plain confusing. What I liked about this book, however, are the well researched and thorough explanations on why so many are suff ering from sugar cravings, high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes and/or heart disease. There are many self tests to take in the book to determine if you have:• Diabesity (pre-diabetes, diabetes and/or are obese)• Food addiction• Nutrition imbalance (not enough Magnesium, Vitamin D, etc.)• Hormone and Thyroid imbalances• Inflammation (allergies as well)• Digestive imbalance (tummy problems)• A lack of energy and/or a metabolism issue After determining what the problem(s) may be with your own body and health issues, practical solutions are offered by Dr. Hyman, using food as medicine and adjusting (de-stressing!) your lifestyle. Though he has a web site which is helpful, it also features expensive supplements for sale. I found that if one follows the advice in his book, improved health can be had in approximately six weeks, give or take a couple. I’m up for the challenge, how about you?
