    The Club

Designed by J.H.Taylor, the course makes the most of the natural contours of the wooded western slopes of the Sid Valley, and offerssome stunning views over Lyme Bay. At just over 5,000 yards, with a standard scratch of 65, visitors could be forgiven for thinkingthe course to be easy, but this is far from the case. Each hole provides its own challenge, the undulating fairways and subtle borrowson the greens add to this demanding yet delightful test of golf.

    The Course

Sidmouth Golf Club was formed in 1889, and is the second oldest club in Devon. Originally consisting of six holes, it was enlarged toeighteen under the supervision of ex-Open Champion J.H.Taylor in 1905.

    1 - Hole 1

    Par 4 Par 4 - (Ladies & Juniors) Stroke Index 15

    Championship - 275 Medal - 275 Regular - 254 C'ship Ladies - 243 Ladies & Juniors - 243

The course starts with a short uphill par 4 where good position from the tee isvital. Only a second shot played from the left side of the fairway will give a goodopportunity to open the round with a birdie. An early introduction also to thesloping greens putting downhill from the right-side of the green can prove

treacherous when the greens are at full speed. Visitors in particular will need toguard against being distracted by the stunning views of Sidmouth Town, LymeBay and the Jurassic Coast.

    2 - Hole 2

    Par 4 Par 4 - (Ladies & Juniors) Stroke Index 13

    Championship - 318 Medal - 318 Regular - 316 C'ship Ladies - 297 Ladies & Juniors - 297

Turning at the nearest point to the sea the course now plays inland to the 9thgreen. The approach to the 2nd green is best played from the right side of thefairway and all but the very longest hitters will benefit from walking ahead slightlyto survey the position of the green

    3 - Hole 3

    Par 4 Par 5 - (Ladies & Juniors) Stroke Index 3

    Championship - 434 Medal - 434 Regular - 422 C'ship Ladies - 403 Ladies & Juniors - 403

After a gentle introduction comes probably the most difficult hole on the course.A drive towards the lone tree in the fairway gives the ideal angle for a second shotbut be careful not to finish behind it. The approach shot will be a long one to asmall, sloping green perched perilously close to the trees on the left side. Manywill choose to play this as a par 5.

    4 - Hole 4

    Par 3 Par 3 - (Ladies & Juniors) Stroke Index 17

    Championship - 120 Medal - 120 Regular - 115 C'ship Ladies - 113 Ladies & Juniors - 113

Next comes the shortest hole on the course and often considered to be thesignature hole. Only a short iron for the majority but be careful to avoid thetree to the right and dont be fooled by the slope as the bank on the left iscovered in long grass and a large bunker sits hidden close by the edge of thegreen.

    5 - Hole 5

    Par 3 Par 3 - (Ladies & Juniors) Stroke Index 11

    Championship - 205 Medal - 205 Regular - 205 C'ship Ladies - 196 Ladies & Juniors - 196

This wide looking hole requires an accurate shot to lay the ball on the puttingsurface. Anything directly at the green will kick away to the right-hand bunkerswhilst those too far up the hill will stay there leaving a tricky chip, particularly ifthe hole is cut at the rear of the green.

    6 - Hole 6

    Par 3 Par 3 - (Ladies & Juniors) Stroke Index 7

    Championship - 159 Medal - 159 Regular - 159 C'ship Ladies - 131 Ladies & Juniors - 131

After passing through the woods to the outer 9 comes the last of this trio of par3s. Be careful to note the position of both the tee markers and the hole as bothtee and green are long and suitable adjustment should be made. Anotheraccurate shot is required and slicers will not enjoy this one with woods to the leftand a slope away to the right.

    10 - Hole 10

    Par 4 Par 4 - (Ladies & Juniors) Stroke Index 12

    Championship - 354 Medal - 354 Regular - 352 C'ship Ladies - 341 Ladies & Juniors - 341

Take a chance to savour the view, gather your breath and try to drive the greenover 350 yards away! Beware of the trees on either side but once the tee shot isnegotiated it is downhill all the way.

    11 - Hole 11

    Par 3 Par 3 - (Ladies & Juniors) Stroke Index 2

    Championship - 178 Medal - 178 Regular - 178 C'ship Ladies - 94 Ladies & Juniors - 94

We now make the only deviation from the true linear layout as we turn eastwardsacross the lane to a raised green. This may be the most daunting shot on thecourse with heather and bushes in front and trees on either side. One of theflatter greens but very little depth so correct club selection is essential. With astroke index of 2 many should be happy with a 4.

    12 - Hole 12

    Par 3 Par 3 - (Ladies & Juniors) Stroke Index 8

    Championship - 182 Medal - 182 Regular - 176 C'ship Ladies - 164 Ladies & Juniors - 164

Back down over the lane and playing much shorter than its sister hole justcompleted, this is a notoriously difficult green to find with trees on the right, aslope away to the left and bunkers in front. Its another dangerous shot with amiscue certain to catch the trees and a second ball from the tee likely to result.

    13 - Hole 13

    Par 5 Par 5 - (Ladies & Juniors) Stroke Index 16

    Championship - 466 Medal - 466 Regular - 461 C'ship Ladies - 425 Ladies & Juniors - 425

The only par 5 on the course and a good birdie chance. Perhaps unusually for apar 5, the key to the tee shot is accuracy with a ditch on the right and thick roughand trees on the low side. Find the correct line and the ball should gallop on andacross the slope to gain valuable extra yardage. If this is achieved then an invitingapproach awaits although visitors may find the sloping fairway difficult to playfrom. Should the first shot find rough then it will be necessary to play as a3-shotter and the ditch across the fairway 100 yards before the green should beborne in mind. A bowl of a green gives rise to the possibility to finishing close tothe hole, and maybe an eagle could result, otherwise plenty of slopes to contendwith.

    14 - Hole 14

    Par 3 Par 3 - (Ladies & Juniors) Stroke Index 6

    Championship - 173 Medal - 173 Regular - 167 C'ship Ladies - 162 Ladies & Juniors - 162

The final pair of short holes starts with a testing shot to an angled green. Favourthe right side and the ball may use the slope to your advantage. Miss on the leftand a tricky pitch or bunker shot will result. The green is two-tiered with muchslope on the lower portion and a rare area of flat ground above.

    15 - Hole 15

    Par 3 Par 3 - (Ladies & Juniors) Stroke Index 10

    Championship - 188 Medal - 188 Regular - 188 C'ship Ladies - 183 Ladies & Juniors - 183

Back through the woods and headed straight for the clubhouse, the final shorthole is a testing one with a tree on the left side pushing players up the hill andaway from the green. Two bunkers may catch the eye and lead you to thinkingthat the green is nearer than it actually is. A simple bowl of a green conceals adevilish range of hole positions which often leads to an infuriating three putt.

    16 - Hole 16

    Par 4 Par 5 - (Ladies & Juniors) Stroke Index 4

    Championship - 392 Medal - 392 Regular - 386 C'ship Ladies - 381 Ladies & Juniors - 381

As we return towards the coast the wind may well become a factor and will ofteninfluence tactics on this challenging par 4. With the wind behind many will choosea positional tee shot, hopefully to the left side of the fairway, whereas windagainst will demand full power if the green is to be found in regulation. Do notpanic if you hear the locals refer to the Snake Pitas there are no snakes in thedip in the fairway but it is still best avoided. An accurate approach will berequired to thread the ball past the rough on the right side of the green and holdit on the green.

    17 - Hole 17

    Par 4 Par 4 - (Ladies & Juniors) Stroke Index 14

    Championship - 292 Medal - 292 Regular - 281 C'ship Ladies - 273 Ladies & Juniors - 273

The blind tee shot should favour the left side for the best angle of approach butmany will guard against the out of bounds and trees further left. Balls played rightof centre risk becoming entangled in trees or falling to the bottom of the chasmof a bunker which lies in wait an awkward distance from the green. The 17th isoften thought of as an easy hole and powerful hitters can reach the green but amisdirected tee shot may create problems which are not easily overcome. But donot fear, we now have that wonderful view back and the delights of the clubhouseare not far away.

    18 - Hole 18

    Par 4 Par 4 - (Ladies & Juniors) Stroke Index 18

    Championship - 283 Medal - 283 Regular - 275 C'ship Ladies - 273 Ladies & Juniors - 273

The shorter hitter will play to the brow of the hill and beyond to leave an invitingshot down the hill. The longer hitter will consider trying to drive the green but willnot want to risk causing alarm in the clubhouse if he veers to the left. Theapproach to the green requires the most delicate of touches to finish in the rightarea or three putts, or more, on a large, sloping two-tier green are a distinctpossibility. Whilst not the longest finishing hole it provides an interesting mentalchallenge.
