Heavy rains continue to hit Kisumu Rally route, signal-ing another mud bath like

in Eldama Ravine last month. The event promises to be a

unique adventure through the ev-ergreen Nandi South’s rolling tea plantations, the rice paddy-fields of Ahero and the expansive sugar plantations of Chemelil.

The route, which takes crews through some exciting gravel stages in Kabito, Awasi, Miwani, Chemelil and Nandi South.

But rains could make it slippery and tricky for drivers and naviga-tors. Similar conditions were wit-nessed in Eldama Ravine’s Na-kuru Rally which Ian Duncan won.

Running on September 10, the sixth round of the KCB Kenya Na-tional Rally Championship (KNRC) will start outside KCB main branch in Kisumu at 7am and finish at Jomo Kenyatta Sports Grounds.

The organising committee has come up with a compact route around Chemilil of 352km of which 162km is competitive.

The Service Park will be situ-ated at Simba Limited’s yard in Chemelil, while drivers briefing is

<< RAVINE ‘MUD MASTER’

Frank Tundo, a veteran of the Safari Rally, was the clerk of the course for the Rift Valley Motor & Sports Club

(RVM&SC)-organized event which according to most of the drivers was extremely ‘wet and tricky’-the underlining word being ‘TRICKY’.

The battle for KNRC honors was taking shape at this rate. Duncan was rejoicing in victory knowing full well that he had indeed consolidated his lead to 345 points with a com-mendable 55point cushion from Carl “Flash” Tundo. But this wasn’t sufficient for the five times Kenya Champion to actually rest on his laurels.

Duncan’s mastery in the mud was simply peerless- if not spectacular. This was when the 1994 WRC Safari Rally winner chalked-up his second victory of 2011-by the by- the second muddy win of the season after Bankika Rally in Athi River last April-but not without ceaseless drama from some teams in the latter stages! The penultimate stage in Poror was in reality laden with drama with Safari Rally winner Carl “Flash” Tundo and Ugandan Jas Mangat rolling their cars just when the finish line appeared so close- yet so far.

But Tundo was able to push his EVO9 car back up and drove it all through to the finish thus salvaging some championship points in third overall place!

“We came through a hairpin bend then cut in, but then there was a hidden rock which tipped us over. I also got a puncture in the same stage,” recounted Tun-do. It was quite heartbreaking for Jas who lost his brakes while de-scending down the 10 Km tarmac section of CS 3-7, and to avoid an impact with an oncoming ve-hicle, his Subaru contraption went through a culvert leading to his excruciating roll. It was Mangat’s second roll in barely a fortnight after he led the home based Pearl of Africa Uganda Rally by a huge margin also to roll out at penulti-mate stage when the title seemed already in the bag-but it’s not over until it’s over.

In an unprecedented occasion, the wet and slippery nature of Ravine terrain claimed the entire 2WD field eliciting mixed reac-tions from crews. But all in all, it was amazing to see the vintage cars of John Rose (Datsun 240Z) and Aslam Khan (Ford Escort) go through the mud-torment stage at CS1.

Consequently, stewards nul-lified 2WD results after all cars got time barred in the muddy 35.40Km Kaprorwa-Sawich (CS 1) stage. The 2WDs were sup-posed to proceed to the long 36Km (CS3) Poror section then finish at the 1.7km stage at Ra-vine stadium, which was never the case. The cars were put into the holding for nearly an hour after service, only to be told that there were no results. This meant that the 2WDs were to cool their heels till Kisumu.

The tough muddy conditions in Ravine proved quite unforgiving for over 10 cars including Joan Nesbitt, Alex Horsey, Imran Kana, David Kioni, Issa Amwari, Edward Maina, Farhaaz Khan, Stella Macharia, Hardeep S Rehsi and Nishit Shah.

Defending Champion Alastair Cavenagh watched helplessly as his title defense ended with me-chanical gremlins.

Alex Horsey exited on CS2 Tu-

gumoi stage. “Unfortunately, the wheel fell off and we broke the wheel studs which we were un-able to fix,” regretted Alex.

Lee Rose, who resides in Nelspruit near the Mozambique boarder, was back in Kenya to visit his Nairobi based parents, and had a go at his home rally which he ended up in second place navigated by his former Kenton College schoolmate Piers Daykin. Tundo was happy with third overall place despite the roll on the penultimate stage.

Baldev Charger’s frustration was evident on the eve of the rally as he desperately needed a finish on his second outing with the Subaru N15. He managed fourth as his veteran Oilibya Rac-ing teammate Azar Anwar settled for fifth. Like Azar, Age was noth-ing but a number for John Rose, who in his 60s, cruised home 7th overall and won the Classic Car Cup in the Nakuru round. Prior to the Rally, Nakuru based driver, Fahd Bary was left to rue inces-sant retirements but 8th overall was quite reassuring. Jasmeet Chana (Toyota Celica GT4) won Group S class to stay atop in the table standings. Kisumu based first timers and siblings Dilraj and Savraj Bhui were happy to return 12th behind Jazzy Chana (Toyota Celica GT4) while Robert Kaugi and George Mwangi came

CLASSIC RALLY >>

Three of the German crews that are entered on the Kenya Airways East African Safari Classic Rally got to-gether for a combined test session.

The test took place in an open cast mine called

Profen near Leipzig that is commonly used by rally raid teams to prepare their cars for the Dakar and similar events. The area offers ev-erything from sand to water splashes, gravel, rocks as well as dips and bumps.

The three drivers – Franz Wunderlich, Gun-ther Kronseder and Josef Jobst – all come from Walter Röhrl’s home town of Regensburg and, by further coincidence, they are all driv-ing cars manufactured in Stuttgart. Wunderlich will drive a Tuthill prepared Porsche 911 with Klaus-Peter Kristek, Kronseder a Mercedes 450 SLC with Gerd Petzold, and Jobst an Au-tosport Kotek prepared Porsche 911 with Hans Griefenstein. In fact this Kotek prepared car is the same 911 with which Björn Waldegård fin-ished second overall on the last EASC in 2009. It is one of team of three 911s prepared and run by Jiri Kotek with the help of Jürgen Bertl.

Kronseder also owns an original ex-Opel Euro Händler Team Manta 400 that he drove recently at the Eifel Rallye Festival.

Franz Wunderlich is a relative newcomer to the sport and only got involved in rallying in the last few years. He bought a Porsche Targa and first drove it in regularity events on tarmac roads. His first proper rally was a tarmac rally in Majorca. This test session was in fact the first time that he had driven in anger on gravel and thus, like several drivers before him, the Safari Classic will be his first major rally.

The Germans are Coming!

Keith 2011 Auto X Champion

Keith Henrie is the new National Autocross 2011 Champion following Round 7 victory in the

Athi River plains. He achieved the feat with an unassailable 147 points score which can’t surpassed by his closest challengers in the remaining two rounds.

Keith clocked 5.31.07minutes and earned two bonus champi-onship points for setting the fast-est time of the day (FTD) on his fourth heat run which he cleared in 1.47.23 minutes. Rajbir Rai, son of two times Kenya Rally champion Sarbi Rai, gave Keith all that he could handle in the latter stages be-fore settling for second overall on 5.31.73 minutes.

Rajbir was however flattered by winning the Under24 category what with a breathtaking war with Ken Anunda. Anunda maintained a steady run in the heat runs be-fore sealing the podium dash and

losing second place by a whisker. Anunda, who is proceeding to the UK for further studies signed off in style and lost second place to Rajbir by three tenths of a second.

Raaji Bharij on his first ever Au-tocross race settled for 4th overall while Amaanraj Rai came home fifth.

A total of 17 drivers participated in the RSC organized round in-cluding 3 Subaru rally cars driven by Ben Muchemi, Stella Macharia and Onkar Rai. Keith’s Starlet pow-ered engine packed up in practice lap compelling him to share a buggy with Ken Anunda.

<< KMSF ELECTIONS

Motor Sports will move away from the work of the previous administration

in order to improve the declining standard of the sport in Kenya.

New Chairman of the Kenya Motor Sports Federation, Dave Macharia said this after he was elected to head of the National Motor Sports Governing Body last month.

“We will make sure the whole board is involved in making deci-sions that are vital to the manage-ment of the motor sports in Ke-nya. No individual will be allowed to run the sport with impunity or dictatorship,” said Macharia.

In his first board meeting with the rest of the Directors, Macha-ria and his team were able to em-bark on several changes that can only be seen as positive signs to-wards getting motor sports to its original shape and respect.

Among the first steps was to make sure the Commissions were by managed by the right persons and with that arrange-ments were put at an advanced stage to revamp confidence into the sponsors especially KCB, which has helped the sport to grow to an unprecedented level since it came on board seven years ago.

Former motocross champion, Anthony Nielson was reinstated as chairman of the Motocross Commission while Anthony Col-lins was appointed as acting Chairman of the Autocross Com-mission. Collins takes over from Raju Chana. For a long time, the commissions had been in the public domain for negative rea-sons before the latest changes.

Kenya Rally Drivers Associa-tion will also enjoy a renewed life at the helm of the motor sports governing body after its repre-sentatives were conspicuously knocked of the Rallies Commis-sion by the previous regime de-spite pleas to reinstate some of the most players in the game.

Chairman of Rallies Com-mission, Ashok Bhalla has been instructed to admit the two mem-bers of the Kenya Rally Drivers Association at future meetings of the unit. Ian Duncan and Raaji Bharij were nominated by KRDA as the official voice of the com-

petitors.KRDA Chairman, Mark Tilbury

is the new chairman of the KMSF Motor Sports Council, a position previously shared by the same chairman of the KMSF.

“KMSF will work alongside KRDA and the Abdul Sidi Rally Academy in order to bring har-mony between the stake holders and developers of the Kenya Na-tional Rally Championship,’’ said Tilbury, who the founder of the sponsorship deal with KCB.

Publications like the Sidis Bulletins will no longer face ob-stacles like in the past, where fundamental rally updates and information were deliberately de-nied to the authors of the maga-zine.

“I am glad changes have taken place in the interest of the sport. Those trying to hinder the promo-tion of the sport had no business being in charge of the federation. I am looking forward to working with the new team,’’ said Anwar Sidi, the Editor of Sidis Bulletin.

Following the visit of both Macharia and Tilbury to a recent meeting of the National Formula Rally Championship contend-ers, the duo took their message to the arm of the KMSF where it was advised to wave off entry for the F2 drivers taking part in the in the Kisumu Rally following the fiascos of the Nakuru Rally.

Among other issues, KMSF will no longer require Club Chair-men to write letters to KMSF on the choice of their representation at future meetings of the Motor Sport Governing Body. It was one of the most controversial deci-sions, to have been applied by the previous head of the federation.

To monitor the work of the mo-tor sports clubs across the coun-try and to make sure the clubs were operating according to the requirements set KMSF, future affiliations of the clubs to the body will be scrutinized properly.

Rogue clubs will be refused admission to KMSF if considered to be reckless in their adminis-tration. Clubs will be required to send List of its legitimate Mem-bers and proper details of the AGM to KMSF before the end of December 2011.

KMSF has opened its doors

to those with suggestions on the mode of electing future KMSF Di-rectors at future Annual General Meetings of the federation.

According to the new chair-man of KMSF and leading rally drivers, “One Club One Vote sys-tem” is seen as controversial and unbalanced method of choosing leaders when the local motor sports fraternity is made up of over 200 members. Suggestions can pave way for amendments in the Constitution of the body.

Separately, anyone with sug-gestions on changes that may be required on the current NCRs should address them to the re-spective Commissions before the end of September 2011.

Clubs are also required to send proposed dates for their 2012 KNRC round to the Rallies Commission before the end of September 2011.
