My Love for Manchester United

I started following the club in 1998 after I got a taste of football through the

Football World Cup at France. And well, there‟s no looking back. That is the

year Manchester United won the famous „Treble‟ – The UEFA Champions

League, The Premier League, and The Football Association (F.A.) Cup.

During those years the rivalry between United and Arsenal was on its peak,

and by far it was (and it still is) my favorite fixture of the year. Then came

the Chelsea era and blue was the color in the air. But Manchester United

never gave up. Sir Alex Ferguson, the most successful manager in the history

of English football, rebuilt the team and Manchester United were

champions again.

This is when from being a simple fan, I started to love Manchester United. I had

just joined my under-graduation course at Manipal Institute of Technology.

This was the first time I was away from home, and I started to feel the brunt

of it. I made some friends but as luck would have it, none would be around

me. I had lost all hope and was all alone. Till then an introvert, I never

tried to make new friends.

That year Manchester United made an amazing comeback. One of the worst

starts to the season. Then with a little more effort and lots of belief they

made a comeback. Slowly and steadily they climbed up the premier league

table. And by the end of the year, they were on top. The 2006-07 season

Manchester United won from Chelsea by a comfortable margin.

…contd

It was this time around Sir Alex Ferguson continuously repeated the word

“Believe” and always said, „We never give up‟. Manchester United won 11

matches that season in the last 10 minutes of the game: Fulham, Liverpool

(at Anfield :D ), AC Milan to name a few.

I started to realize that there is more to learn from Manchester United than just

How to play football. I started to read about their history- The Busby Babes,

The Munich crash and the comeback made by United when they won the

European Cup. I learnt about how Sir Alex Ferguson came back from the

brink of being sacked to win the FA Cup in 1991. And the rest, as they called

was history. I realized all the more the importance of the win at Nou Camp in

1999 when United won in the dying seconds of the match. The absence of

friends around me gave me time to learn about the best club in the world.

I started to implement Sir Alex Ferguson‟s words. I started to believe in myself. I

started to believe that I was no less than others. I started fighting, against

my own fears. And it was during this time I transformed myself. I was more

confident and more outgoing. I made new friends (who are still with me). I

changed for the better.

In short, I learnt how to live.

The following years were all the more glorious for Manchester United. They won

the Champions League for the 3rd

time in their history, won the 19th

league

title to overtake bitter rivals Liverpool as the most successful team in England.

Sir Alex recently completed his 25th

year at the club.

The story goes on at Manchester United.

My story has just this small part missing- a trip to Old Trafford to watch

Manchester United play.
