Home energy use is

responsible for over a

quarter of UK carbon dioxide

(CO2) emissions which

contribute to climate change

Ultimately, by 2050 all

dwellings will need to

achieve an energy

performance rating in the

range of a high EPC band B

to band A if we are to reach

our target of a 80% cut in

CO2 emissions across the

entire housing stock

The headline challenge

Thermal bridging details

37 non repeating thermal bridge junctions

• extensive modelling of 112 existing and improved junction variants

Existing dwellings do not have significant thermal bridging

• y = 0.028 W/m2K pre-refurbishment

Detailing at Eco-terrace has maintained a good level of thermal bridging

• y = 0.043 W/m2K post -refurbishment

• provided an existing dwelling with the equivalent of the Enhanced Construction Details (y = 0.040 W/m2K)

Investigation has significant learning for industry, and may bring in more locations for inclusion in SAP revisions

Tool-box talk

Training links each job and contractor to overall energy performance of property• all trades can impact a refurbishment,

from the first one in to the last• every job can impact on the performance

achieved by the previous trades• high levels of energy efficiency requires

the highest standards of workmanship

Contractor noted that the approach to working did change favourably in the other dwellings which formed part of the overall refurbishment scheme in Page Hall

Lessons learnt

Energy Saving Trust:

• Flexibility in terms of timeline

• One size does not fit all

• Performance assessment must include both regulated and non-regulated emissions

• Engagement and training for all on-site trades

– where any CO2 savings are missed the burden is passed to other

dwellings

• Clear lines of communication with project teams• Involvement of the local community and local representatives
