DmitriDmitriyevich(25September1906–9August1975)wasaRussianpianistandcomposeroftheSovietperiod.Heisregardedasoneofthemajorcomposersofthe20thcentury.ShostakovichachievedfameintheSovietUnionunderthepatronageofSovietchiefofstaffMikhailTukhachevsky,butlaterhadacomplexanddifficultrelationshipwiththegovernment.Nevertheless,hereceivedaccoladesandstateawardsandservedintheSupremeSovietoftheRSFSR(1947–1962)andtheSupremeSovietoftheSovietUnion(from1962untilhisdeath).
Apolystylist,Shostakovichdevelopedahybridvoice,combiningavarietyofdifferentmusicaltechniquesintohisworks.Hismusicischaracterizedbysharpcontrasts,elementsofthegrotesque,andambivalenttonality;thecomposerwasalsoheavilyinfluencedbytheneo-classicalstylepioneeredbyIgorStravinsky,and(especiallyinhissymphonies)bythelateRomanticismassociatedwithGustavMahler.Shostakovich'sorchestralworksinclude15symphoniesandsixconcerti.Hischamberoutputincludes15stringquartets,apianoquintet,twopianotrios,andtwopiecesforstringoctet.Hissolopianoworksincludetwosonatas,anearlysetofpreludes,andalatersetof24preludesandfugues.Otherworksincludethreeoperas,severalsongcycles,ballets,andasubstantialquantityoffilmmusic;especiallywellknownisTheSecondWaltz,Op.99,musictothefilmTheFirstEchelon(1955–1956),aswellasthesuitesofmusiccomposedforTheGadfly.
SymphonyNo.6inBminor,Op.54waswrittenin1939,andfirstperformedinLeningradon21November1939bytheLeningradPhilharmonicOrchestraunderYevgenyMravinsky.TheSixthSymphonyisunusualinstructure,beginningwithalongandintrospectiveslowmovement,followedbytwoshortmovements:ascherzoanda"full-bloodedanddebauchedmusic-hallgalop".AccordingtomusiccriticHerbertGlass,the"entire[first]movementisbasedonthecellofaminorthird,withasecondtheme-whichfollowswithouttransition-themotifofadiminishedseventh,withthetrillatitscloseformingthethirdmajoringredientofthemovement-thetwothemesandthetrillcombinedasasortofsuper-theme.Thecomposerlaysthisoutasclearlyasifhewereteachingamusic-appreciationclass:dolistenforit.Chambermusiceffectsaboundwith,forinstance,piccoloorflute,eerilyaloneoraccompaniedbytheB-flatclarinets.Therearewallopingclimaxes,too,eachofwhichdiesawayintothegloom.Note,too,thecomposer'swonderfulspotlightingofthemelancholyEnglishhorn,alonefigureafterthedinhasevaporated."ThethirdmovementgalopisthemovementShostakovichhimselfthoughtwasmostsuccessful.MusiccriticDanielHathawaynotedthatinthethirdmovement,[the]"SnaredrumsratcheteduptheriotofbrutalsoundintheScherzoandreferencestotheWilliamTellOvertureandlaughingtrombonesaddedahilariousburlesquequalitytothefinale."
