IOWA BEEF EXPO HEIFER AWARDThe Iowa Beef Breeds Council has started a

program in which each breed is holding a sale at the Iowa beef expo will have the opportunity to present a $500 Iowa Beef Expo Heifer Award sponsored by the Iowa Beef Breed Council to a junior exhibitor who purchased and

exhibited a heifer from their breed sale. Each breed Association has been asked to develop their own criteria for this award. Listed below are the two requirements of the Iowa beef breeds council.

The Iowa Beef Breeds Council will award $500 To the junior exhibitor of the highest ranking heifer purchased from each breed sale at the 2017 Iowa Beef Expo and exhibited at the 2017 Iowa State Fair. Heifers will be ranked at the

discretion of each breed association under the following conditions.

1. The heifer must have been purchased in an Iowa Beef Expo sanctioned sale and exhibited by a junior at the 2017 Iowa State Fair.

2. Only one heifer per breed sale (11 total) will be awarded. Therefore, high and low percentage cattle will be considered for one award. Furthermore, cattle with multiple breed Registrations may only be awarded by the breed

association which sold those cattle at the 2017 Iowa Beef Expo.

Award

The Luett involvement with the Shorthorn breed for five generations began with Henry C Luett, Dave Luett’s grandfather, who immigrated from Germany to the US in 1859. In 1892 he bought a farm in eastern Iowa, married Eda, raised Shorthorn cattle and gave 5 Shorthorn cows, or the equivalent, to each child when they married. Dave’s father, Edward A. Luett, married Gladys in 1934 and contin-ued raising Shorthorn cattle. In 1948 Dave was eligible to join 4-H and showed a shorthorn steer annually. When he was a sophomore in high school he went to a consignment sale in Lancaster,WI and bought a purebred registered heifer for $275.00, top of sale, from the Neal James Estate consignments. Don James handled the affairs of the

Estate and was also the manager of the Hickories Shorthorn herd at Pardeeville, WI. In 1961 Dave graduated from Iowa State University with a B.S. in Farm Management. In December he received a call from Don James inquiring if he would like to interview in Portage, WI for a job at City Bank as a Trust Officer with potential of developing a farm management service out of the Trust Dept, at the bank. Two and a half years later with his wife, Elaine, they left Portage and moved to Maquoketa, IA when an Ag loan officer encouraged him to interview fir a job assisting him with farm loans. Dave held hat position for 10 years. His small herd of Shorthorn cattle were part of an after-hours farming operation that continued until the herd grown and leaving the bank was necessary to focus on the cattle and farm operation. The herd grew to over 200 cows, the children were graduating from high school and college and the operation had to be re-duced to where Elaine and he could handle it alone. They reduced the operation from 200 cows to approximately 100 and 800 A. of corn and soybeans to 500A. This year they rented the cropland out due to health concerns. A granddaughter, Dylana Luett, continued family tradition and showed a Shorthorn cow and heifer calf named Grand Champion over all breeds at the 2016 North Central Iowa Fair in Mason City, IA. At the Iowa Shorthorn Steer Feed out in 2000, Luett Family Shorthorns received a plaque for 1st Place Rate of Gain, 2nd Place Rate of gain, 1st Place Carcass and 2nd Place Carcass. Dave and Elaine raised four children, David John, Brenda, Barbara and Steven. All won state 4-H awards, showed Shorthorn Steers and Heifers and, graduated from Iowa State University. Some of the grandchildren continue to show cattle. Community involvement included serving a three-year term on the Iowa State Shorthorn board, a Three-year term on the Iowa State University Extension board, 26 years on the Jackson County Fair Board, the Jackson County Cattlemen board, including one year as President. Dave and Elaine both served terms on the Jackson County Extension Council. Additionally, Dave served as treasurer of the First Lutheran Church. Involvement with a Shorthorn connection early in life developed into a lifetime of interesting experiences! It has been a real pleasure to meet and do business with people in various states, Eastern and Western Canada, over the years.
