What is flashback?

Descriptive writing that appeals to the senses.

What is imagery?

Clues the author gives about something that will occur later in the story.

What is foreshadowing?

The tone the author sets in the story…the general “feel”.

What is mood?

When something represents not only itself, but also something else.

What is symbolism?

The when and where the story takes place.

What is setting?

The main character of the story.

What is the protagonist?

The person or thing causing the conflict.

What is the antagonist?

The struggle that is conveyed through the plot.

What is the conflict?

The message that the author is trying to convey; what the main character learns

from the experience.

What is theme?

When a story is told from a narrator who knows only the thoughts and actions of one

or few characters.

What is third person limited point of view?

When we first meet the characters, learn about the setting and get a peek at the

conflict.

What is exposition?

When the loose ends in the story are tied up and things begin to come to a close.

What is falling action?

The turning point of the story. The most intense part of the plot.

What is the climax?

The story comes to a reasonable ending.

1950s or 60s in a neighborhood.
