Enrica Casentini
Enrica Casentini created this
season’s cover illustration for
SHOP Holland. Her colourful
and expressive aesthetic makes
her the perfect choice for this
cover, inspired by our feature
on page 42 about Amsterdam’s
less well-known areas and sights.
It shows a tulip – Holland’s
national fower – with parts of the
city peeping out between its petals.

ALL TOO TEMPTING
Sculptor and jewellery designer
Bibi van der Velden, who de-
scribes her creations as wearable
works of art, has collaborated
with renowned Dutch jewellers
Steltman to present a special col-
lection called Forbidden Fruit,
inspired by the Biblical story of
Adam and Eve. The snake fea-
tures as the main character in all
of the pieces, crafted from 18 carat
gold, with diamond-studded eyes
and engraved markings. Here its
tail is coiled around some mag-
nifcent blue topaz drops, making
a dazzling pair of earrings that will
be a distinctive addition to your
jewellery collection. gl

In Store: Black Sheep Road
Inspired by the English idea of a ‘black sheep’ as someone who stands apart from the group, Peter Landa was moved to create Black Sheep Road, a concept store based in Amsterdam that provides clothing for those with individual style. and busier over the past two years.
Before it was mainly visited by lo-
cals, but now tourists are starting to
discover this great part of town, too.

most multicultural spot is a great

It’s not all about Albert Cuyp-

is why it’s often known as the
Quartier Latin of Amsterdam.
The best chicken satay in town

To sample Amsterdam’s up-

shoemakers, ceramicists, boutiques
selling locally made fashion (such

ware specialists, cookbook sellers,
delicatessens and much more.
The Rijksmuseum reopened
in 2013 after a 10-year hiatus for

in an elegant townhouse and run
by antique dealer and bag afcio-
nado Hendrikje Ivo. Highlights
of the collection, which includes
pieces dating back to the 16th
century, include everything from
delicate French silk bridal purses
to sparkling evening bags. A short
walk away, Museum van Loon

When it comes to tailoring, one innovative Amsterdam brand is taking the world by storm. Ruairidh Pritchard
discovers why
The Italians are generally regarded
as leading the way in sharp suit-
ing, with Britain’s suave signature
style a close second, but the tide is
turning in tailoring, with Holland’s
very own Suitsupply spearheading
the made-to-measure revival.

A good suit never goes out of
style, and whether it’s a classic dou-
ble-breasted blazer, a sophisticated
dinner jacket or a more contempo-
rary two-button sports coat, tai-
loring truly is the most important
part of a man’s wardrobe. Once
the signature of the super-wealthy,
a made-to-measure suit is the se-
cret of looking well dressed. While
seasonal of-the-peg suits can, at
best, last a few years, encompass-
ing passing trends as they come
and – inevitably – go, a suit that is
expertly made for your measure-
ments is a real investment in style.
While the fashion houses
and bespoke tailors lining Lon-
don’s Savile Row and Milan’s Via
Montenapoleone have catered to
the most discerning clients, ofer-
ing bespoke and made-to-measure
services to generations of the best-
dressed men, there’s something
of a made-to-measure revolution
occurring. The driving force is
Suitsupply, founded in 2000 by
27-year-old Amsterdam native
Fokke de Jong, who had already
hosted numerous ‘tailoring parties’
during his time at university. Now
CEO, de Jong plays an integral part
in the Suitsupply machine, and is
leading the way in expanding the
brand across Europe and the USA
– living out his personal mantra of
‘creating the best ft without ft-
ting in’.

by Suitsupply’s collections, but its
unconventional choice of locations.
‘We are hardly ever in among all the
other fashion brands,’ says de Jong.
‘We convert interesting big spaces
such as an old church, a penthouse
ofce or a big Soho loft into a com-
fortable and relaxed environment.
‘We are there for people who
want to create their own space –
not just to ft in, but to fnd their
own ft,’ says de Jong. ‘We want to
relate to our customers in a natural
way and combine product knowl-
edge with personality to create top-
notch service.’
The company prides itself on
combining sartorial fair and cre-
ativity with craftsmanship and
the latest technology to deliver
outstanding results, quickly and
efectively. It ofers a huge array
of in-store ‘while you wait’ tai-
loring alterations, while a fully
bespoke suit can be with the cus-
tomer in as little as fve weeks
from the frst consultation with a
Suitsupply specialist.
For the upcoming autumn/win-
ter 2014/15 collection, Suitsupply’s
head designer Murray Coetzee and
his team looked to the past for in-
spiration, combing the archives of
some of Italy’s fnest fabric produc-
ers. ‘Everything we do is through
the lens of classic Italian tailoring,’
says Coetzee, ‘but our time in the
archives has led to a collection that
is truly next level.’
Patterns range from subtle
checks to bold windowpanes and
classic houndstooth, emblazoned
across suits, coats, shirts, ties
and socks; an incredibly elegant
What Suitsupply is doing is just
that – a made-to-measure service,
but on a large scale, bringing be-
spoke to the masses. Using a com-
bination of the fnest fabrics, Eu-
ropean styling and expert in-store
tailoring services, the company is
opening the doors to custom-made
outftting for an increasing number
of young men across the globe who
are seeking to add their own style
to traditional tailoring.
‘Tailoring always feels very es-
tablished. We have a more unsys-
tematic approach to it,’ explains de
Jong. This is illustrated not only

double-breasted overcoat is one of
the collection’s many standouts.
Texture is also important for
autumn/winter 2014/15, with
fabrics from luxurious cashmere
blends to hardy tweeds. Mean-
while, variations on traditional
blues anchor the collection, rang-
ing from bold Neapolitan to deep
navy, with accents that run the
gamut from rich shades of burnt
orange to ochre, oxblood and for-
est green.
‘With their innovative use of
heritage fabrics, Coetzee and his
team have set a new bar with this
collection,’ says de Jong. ‘It’s about
seeing the past through a modern
lens, which is our signature ap-
proach to fashion.’
‘We designed these clothes for
the contemporary guy who’s seri-
ous about style, but likes to have
fun with it, too,’ explains Coetzee.
‘With so many classically inspired,
complementary fabrics to choose
from, we’ve given him everything
he needs to make his own unique
statement this season.’
What’s clear from Suitsupply’s
success is that made-to-measure
has evolved from a signature of the
traditional gentlemen’s wardrobe
into a staple for the modern man
who can not only beneft from a
perfectly cut suit, but also have
his choice of fabrics and fnishing
– ensuring his suit fts his style as
well as his measurements

Holland’s restaurant scene is one
of Europe’s most diverse; diners
are as likely to fnd a traditional
meal with meat, potatoes and veg-
etables as they are an authentic
Indian, Chinese, Italian or Turk-
ish dish. Even so, the country has
its own rich culinary heritage;
the Dutch once dominated the
world’s spice trade and the re-
gion’s historic banquets were lav-
ish multi-course events. Today,
a simpler approach is favoured,
with the Netherlands’ famed
cheeses, pancakes and sweets tak-
ing centre stage.
The country now plays host to
around 100 Michelin-starred eat-
eries, with fne-dining establish-
ments located throughout Amster-
dam, Rotterdam and The Hague,
as well as the country’s gourmet
capital, Maastricht. These res-
taurants typically combine local
and exotic ingredients with clas-
sical French culinary techniques
to produce standout menus. How-
ever, traditional Dutch dishes
still have a place in the culinary
landscape, such as herring with
onion or pickle and French fries
covered with mayonnaise.

The rich heritage of footwear label Van
Lier is refected in the luxurious décor of
its Amsterdam boutique. The store strikes
the perfect balance between tradition and

1. Vyne
Vyne is Amsterdam’s leading destination
for wine connoisseurs. The bar is divided
into two sections; one represents Old
World wines while the other refects the
modern producers of Australia and Chile.
Vyne, Prinsengracht 411, 1016 HM Amsterdam, +31 (0)20 344 6408, vyne.nl
2. Mazzo
A slice of Italy in the heart of Amsterdam,
Mazzo offers a lounge-like interior, exten-
sive wine list and menu featuring simple
yet delicious dishes. The wine selection
draws from all of Italy’s wine-producing
regions, and includes whites, reds,
sparkling and dessert wines. Take a seat
at one of the long tables or sink into a
Chesterfeld sofa while enjoying delicious
pasta, pizza or risotto dishes.
Mazzo, Rozengracht 114, 1016 NH Amsterdam, +31 (0)20 344 6402, mazzoamsterdam.nl
3. Suzy Wong
Taking inspiration from the US, France
and the Orient in both its décor and drinks
menu, Suzy Wong has a glamorous
speakeasy feel. Be sure to try the
Bee-Trap, with its mix of vodka,
honey, lemon and orange bitters.

– Albert Cuypmarkt,
42: City Secrets
Pilsvogel,
Couscous Club
Moksi
Wallen,
оригинальный отель Sir Albert в
районе De Pijp.

И, наконец, ботанический сад De Hortus, считающийся одним из старейших в мире, и местная оранжерея с живыми бабочками непременно доставят вам море удовольствия.albertcuypmarkt.nl, pilsvogel.nl, couscousclub.nl, moksi.nl, quartierputain.nl, siralberthotel.com, de9straatjes.nl, tassenmuseum.nl,museumvanloon.nl, eyeflm.nl, электронной nemo.nl, ehortus.nl

Albert Cuypmarkt

Albert Cuypmarkt

Couscous
Club——

的——de NegenStraatjes(九街),这

Suitsupply,
Fokke de Jong,
Suitsupply

haring mentah yang diawetkan, dan
tak terhitung banyaknya hidangan
dan makanan lezat dari berbagai
etnik.
Ada lagi selain Albert Cuyp-
markt; kawasan sebelahnya dikemas
dengan berbagai toko multikultur,
kafe, restoran dan bar, sehingga
daerah ini sering disebut dengan
nama Quartier Latin of Amsterdam
(Daerah Latin Amsterdam). Sate
ayam yang paling enak di kota ini
bisa ditemukan di Pilsvogel yang
ramai, sementara Couscous Club
dikhususkan buat – sesuai dengan
namanya – makanan khas Afrika
Selatan, dan Moksi menyediakan
kari yang paling lezat, selain sate
juga roti yang aduhai enaknya!
Pengembangan Amsterdam
lainnya adalah pembaruan kawasan
lampu merah klasik yang terjadi
bertahap dan tak beraturan den-
gan banyak tempat pangkas yang
sangat trendi, ruang kesenian dan
bar kafe papan atas dengan berb-
agai model gaya yang diapit gerai
dengan reputasi kurang baik. Di
jantung De Wallen, baru-baru ini
‘barcade’ (bar pasca industri yang
dipadukan dengan tempat hiburan
tempo dulu) dibuka bersama kafe
modern, Quartier Putain, keduanya
di dalam bangunan yang bisa mem-
buat orang lupa dengan waktu,
dan hotel Sir Albert dengan gaya
"aristokrat modern"-nya di De Pijp
berdampingan dengan bangunan
menarik lainnya.
Untuk mencoba butik papan
atas Amsterdam, tempat yang pal-
ing bagus untuk dituju – dan serba
lengkap – adalah Negen Straatjes
(‘the Nine Little Streets’), harta
terpendam dari bangunan abad
ke 17 hingga 19 di kawasan kanal
barat yang dilestarikan Unesco. Di
sini Anda akan menemukan lebih
dari 200 toko khusus: toko pembuat
sepatu, keramik, butik yang men-
jual mode pakaian buatan setempat
(seperti Hester van Eeghen, dengan
aksesorinya yang menambat hati,
dan Noa Lifestyle), toko konsep,
khusus perlengkapan rumah, buku
masak-memasak, toko makanan
dan lainnya.
Rijksmuseum dibuka kembali
pada 2013 setelah istirahat 10 tahun
karena renovasi, dan adalah tempat
yang menarik untuk dikunjungi,
namun di sana juga ada banyak
balai budaya yang lebih kecil dan
sederhana yang menarik untuk dili-

pet, berada di sebuah rumah elegan
yang dikelola oleh pedagang barang
antik dan penggemar tas Hendrikje
Ivo. Koleksi utamanya yang ter-
masuk barang-barang berasal dari
abad ke 16, mencakup mulai dari
dompet pengantin sutera dari Pran-
cis yang lembut hingga tas malam
yang berkilau. Beberapa langkah
tidak jauh dari sana terdapat Mu-
seum van Loon, sebuah rumah
pribadi menarik yang dibangun
tahun 1671, berisi barang-barang
antik serta Dutch Old Masters; kun-

Anda lebih memahami kehidupan

Orang tua mungkin tertarik
ke Nemo, museum sains, yang me-

Dalam Fokus: Suitsupply
Bila menyangkut penjahitan, salah
satu merek inovatif Amsterdam
terbukti unggul di dunia. Ruairidh
Pritchard menemukan mengapa
Italia biasanya dikenal paling ung-
gul untuk padanan pakaian yang
kontras, sementara Inggris tidak
jauh di tempat kedua untuk gaya
khasnya yang elegan, namun ter-
kait penjahitan tidak demikian
halnya, Suitsupply milik Belanda
memimpin di depan dalam hal ke-
bangkitan dibuat-sesuai-ukuran.
Setelan yang bagus tidak per-
nah ketinggalan gaya, dan tidak soal
apakah itu blazer dengan dua kanc-
ing dada klasik, jaket makan malam
yang mentereng, atau pun jas olah-
raga dua kancing yang lebih kon-
temporer, penjahitan tak diragukan
berperan sangat penting dalam
lemari pakaian pria. Suatu saat
ciri khusus orang super kaya akan
memandang setelan yang dibuat-
sesuai-ukuran menjadi penentu
berpenampilan rapi. Walaupun
setelan musiman dengan ukuran
bebas dapat, paling banter, ber-
tahan beberapa tahun, melibatkan
kritis, selain menawarkan layanan
sesuai pesanan dan dibuat-sesuai-
ukuran untuk generasi dengan pria
berbusana terbaisesuatu laink, ada
juga sesuatu dari revolusi dibuat-
sesuai-ukuran yang sedang berlang-
sung. Tenaga pendorongnya adalah

Suitsupply, didirikan tahun 2000
oleh Fokke de Jong yang berusia 27
tahun dan asli orang Amsterdam,
yang telah mengadakan banyak
‘pesta menjahit’ selama masa kuli-
ahnya. Kini sebagai CEO, de Jong
berperan penting untuk mesin Suit-
supply, dan sedang memimpin cara
baru untuk perluasan merek ke ke
seluruh Eropa, AS – meneruskan
mantra pribadinya untuk ‘meng-
hasilkan sesuatu yang sangat pas
tanpa mengepaskannya’.
Itulah apa yang sedang di-
lakukan Suitsupply - layanan yang
dibuat-sesuai-ukuran, namun
dalam skala yang luas, menghad-
irkan sesuai pesanan ke banyak
orang. Dengan mengombinasikan
kain-kain terbaik, gaya Eropa, dan
pakar untuk layanan penjahitan
dalam toko, perusahaan ini mem-
buka pintu menuju penyediaan pak-
aian sesuai permintaan bagi para
pria muda yang semakin banyak di
seluruh dunia yang ingin menam-
bahkan gayanya sendiri ke penjahi-
tan tradisional.
‘Penjahitan selalu terasa ma-
pan, diterima apa adanya. Kami
memiliki pendekatan yang lebih ti-
dak sistematik akan hal ini,’ jelas de
Jong. Ini terlihat tidak hanya pada
koleksi-koleksi Suitsupply, tapi juga
pada pilihan lokasinya yang tak laz-
im. ‘Kami jarang berada di antara
semua merek mode lainnya,’ kata de
Jong. ‘Kami mengubah ruangan be-
sar yang menarik seperti gereja tua,
kantor di griya tawang, atau Soho
loft besar menjadi lingkungan yang
nyaman dan rileks.
‘Bagi mereka yang ingin mem-
buat ruangannya sendiri kami siap
membantu – tidak hanya untuk
ditempati namun untuk menemu-
kan apa yang paling cocok untuk
mereka tempati’ kata de Jong.
‘Kami ingin membangun relasi
dengan pelanggan kami dengan
cara yang alami dan memadukan
pengetahuan produk dengan ke-
pribadian untuk menghasilkan lay-
anan terunggul.’
Perusahaan ini merasa bangga
karena telah memadukan bakat
menjahit dan kreativitas dengan ke-
ahlian serta teknologi terkini untuk
mencapai hasil yang menakjubkan,
cepat dan efektif. Ada banyak sekali
pilihan alternatif jahitan di dalam
toko ‘sementara Anda menunggu’
yang ditawarkan, sementara itu
setelan lengkap sesuai pesanan su-
dah bisa diterima pelanggan dalam
waktu lima minggu sejak kon-
sultasi pertama dengan spesialis
Suitsupply.
Untuk koleksi musim gugur/
dingin 2014/15 berikutnya, kepala
desainer Suitsupply Murray Coe-
tzee dan timnya mencari inspirasi
ke masa silam, meneliti arsip dari
beberapa produsen kain terbaik Ita-
lia. ‘Semua yang kami lakukan ha-
rus sesuai dengan kaca mata jahitan
Italia klasik’ kata Coetzee, ‘namun
selama kami di arsip kami telah
menghasilkan koleksi yang sesung-
guhnya berada pada tingkat yang
lebih tinggi.’
Kisaran corak mulai dari subtle

‘Menggunakan kain warisan
inovatif, Coetzee dan timnya telah
mendirikan bar baru dengan koleksi
ini,’ kata de Jong. ‘Ini adalah soal
melihat masa silam melalui kaca

pendekatan khas kami untuk mode.’
‘Kami mendesain pakaian-
pakaian ini bagi mereka yang bu-

musim ini.’
Apa yang tampak jelas di

bahwa dibuat-sesuai-ukuran telah
