Shoot Tip Culture may be described as the culture of terminal portion of a shoot comprising the meristem together with primordial and developing leaves and adjacent stem tissue.

Page 3: Shoot Tip Culture - Tissue Culture

Excised shoot tips and meristem can be cultured aseptically.

Grow out directly into a small leafy shoot or multiple shoots.

Application in T/C

Shoot tips & Meristem in tissue culture are very varied :-

Virus Eradication

Micro Propagation

Storage of Genetic Resources

Virus Eradication

Many Plants contain systemic viruses which substantially reduce their potential yield and quality.

Important to produce virus free stocks which can be multiplied.

Application in T/C

Micropropagation

A sexual or vegetative of whole plants using tissue culture techniques is referred to as micropropagation.

Shoot tip or meristem culture of many plant species can successfully be used for micropropagation.

Application in T/C

Storage of Genetic Resources

Many plants produce seeds that are highly heterozygous in nature or that is recalcitrant.

Seeds are not accepted for storing genetic resources.

The meristem from such plants can be stored in vitro.
