Certificate Distribution Ceremony among Psychologists of Department of Psychology, University of Sindh Jamshoro

Sindh Health and Education Development Society (SHEDS) provided internship facility to the students of Department of Psychology, University of Sindh, Jamshoro as a regular activity during summer vacation i.e., June and

July. This practice is being observed since last several years. thDuring the period under report the internship program commenced from 15

thJune, 2011 and came to an end on 16 of July 2011.

The basic objective of this internship program was to provide maximum knowledge and information regarding practical application of counseling tools while dealing with the clients.

At the end of the internship program, a certificate distribution ceremony was held rdon 23 of July 2011, at Gymkhana

Club Hyderabad jointly organized by SHEDS and Department of Psychology, University of Sindh- Jamshoro.

The key stakeholders who attended the program included Dr. Bux Ali Pittaffi EDO Health Hyderabad, Dr. Masood Solangi Director Public Health, Mr. Qurban Ali Memon Executive District officer Community Development Department, Government of Sindh; Mr. Aashif Memon District Program Coordinator BBSYDP while from sindh university side Mr. Sheeraz Ilyas Shaikh, lecturer Department of Psychology, UoS expressed

their views. The stakeholders while expressing and sharing their views said that it is a healthy sign that GO and NGO collaboration is there having one objective to develop the capacity of the students. The stakeholders also appreciated the efforts and professional expertise of the SHEDS team for its role as a development and

welfare organization. They also applauded the sincere efforts of Mr. Shaikh to coordinate with the NGO and manage such useful activity for the students every year. Internees clapped for Ms. Sadaf Alamdar for her guidance and facilitation throughout the internship program. During the ceremony students also shared their experiences and were of the view that it was a wonderful opportunity and exposure for them to learn the counseling skills and their practical implications. They also shared that internship has given them confidence that they can practically apply their knowledge in effective way in future. Ms Sadaf Alamdar key Facilitator of the internship expressing her views appreciated the efforts of students and their enthusiasm during the tenure of internship and also their active participation in poster competition. She said that internship is not only necessary for the students to learn for practical approach but this is also necessary for the grooming and enhancing the personality of interns.Mr. Sheeraz Ilyas Shaikh Lecturer Psychology department, University of sindh said that purpose of Internship Services at the University of Sindh is to provide undergraduate and graduate students a means to integrate academic theories and principles with practical job experience through cooperative education and internships, thereby reinforcing and expanding classroom learning while preparing them for postgraduate employment. In this regard, he sincerely aspired and hoped to have a mutually beneficial association with SHEDS to keep continue the spirit through the Summer Vacation internship. Dr. Zahid Saddar Executive Director, SHEDS said that the joint venture remained very fruitful and hoped the same cooperation will remain continue. He appreciated the efforts of Mr. Sheeraz for better and effective coordination, Ms. Sadaf for excellent facilitation and all participants for their full attendance and participation at all levels. He also thanked all the stakeholders who spared their precious time and attended the simple and attractive ceremony and really rose this occasion with their presence.The program ended with the vote of thanks by Mr. Khalid Shafee, Chairman SHEDS and acclaimed to continue internship facility to the students of department of Psychology, University of Sindh Jamshoro to foster a continued learning experience at SHEDS. At the end 11 internees of MSc/ BS program were awarded certificates on the successful completion of the program. Beside this Key facilitator of the training Ms Sadaf Alamdar was given honorary certificate for her strenuous efforts and hardworking to make the internship program successful and result oriented.

HEALTH, WATER, SANITATION & HYGIENE

SHEDS with the collaboration of OPP-RDT arranged one day three medical camps at Sabu Rahu, takuka Sakrand, District Shaheed Benazir Abad, Bhit Shah Taluka Hala , District Matiari and Shahpur chakar,

th thdistrict sanghar on 8 , 20 October and 11 November

2011 respectively for providing free medical facilities to the poor and needy people affected by rain and flood.

Dr. Zahid Saddar, Khalid Shafee, Dr. Naeem, Dr. Riffat Parveen and LHV Sonia and Ms. Shabana Naz provided medical services and also provided health education to the incoming patients. People from the surrounding more than 20 villages were provided services and medicines in the medical camp free of cost. Besides medicines water purification tablets were also distributed in the medical camp to ensure availability

of safe, clean drinking water to the community

The team was also consisting of Ms Sadaf Clinical Psychologist who held individual and collective counseling sessions with the affected people to boost them and help them to come out from the trauma and make them strong enough to face the challenges of life bravely. The main objective of the counseling was to reduce their depression and keep them mentally healthy to cope with difficult challenges ahead.

The patients were mostly suffered from Malaria, GI

SHEDS Organizes Medical Camps

and Skin Infection due to the poor hygiene conditions and lack of health facilities. In all 1011 people in which 344 were males, 367 females and 300 Children were examined and provided necessary medicines at the camp free of cost.

Planning & Development Department (PDD) government of Sindh has under gone agreement with SHEDS on the project “Safe Drinking Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Promotion”

thdated 25 October, 2011. The project is for the period of one year and is focusing on hygiene education in community and schools, water and sanitation committee formation, training, masons trainings, installation of handpumps and construction and rehabilitation of latrines in 10 villages of taluka Hala, district Matiari

CREDIT ENTERPRISE DEVELOPMENT (CED)

The main objective of the CED Sector is to bridge the gap between have and have not’ through extending

micro-credit facilities for establishing or expanding small business ventures. Besides, farmers and the rural entrepreneurs in terms of credit, skill development and enterprise support. The CED sector is involved in Micro

SHEDS Agreement with P&DD Government of Sindh

credit to improve the socio economic conditions of the rural people. In this regard SHEDS with the support of Orangh Charitable Trust (OCT) is implementing this program since 2005 and providing loan to communities focusing on Women.

These loans are specially given for the establishment of small businesses, purchasing inputs, promoting Handi crafts including embroidery, sewing machines tailoring etc and trading breeding of live stock. The loan provided by SHEDS since 2005 is summarized in the table which is given below.

During the period under report SHEDS has provided Micro financing facilities to a tune of 17,792,500 to 1,637 clients who are engaged in small business ventures like small retailers, tailoring, handi crafts, live stock, agriculture, households, and other business ventures.

HUMAN INSTITUTIONAL DEVELOPMENT (HID)

The HID Sector has been developed for capacity building and enhancement of skills of SHEDS volunteers, staff members, community activists and members of CBO/NGOs.

PROGRAMS/MEETINGS/TRAININGS SEMINARS ARRANGED

During the current period under report different organizations including Mercy Corps Pakistan, bridge Consultants foundation, DTCE/UNDP, Orangi Charitable Trust and etc arranged trainings/Meetings at SHEDS Training center Hyderabad which included trainings for Doctors, Paramedics, NGOs workers on TB, HIV, Local council Association (LCAs) Monitoring.

The purpose of this meeting was to update the staff regarding the activities to be carried out under the project and explain every staff member their roles and responsibilities so that everyone can be familiarized and oriented regarding the project.

All the project staff including finance section staff and Program Manager M&E attended this meeting.

SHEDS arranged a seminar on the eve of World AIDS thDay on 29 Nov, 2011 with the collaboration of SPO

Hyderaabd on the Eve of World AIDS Day, 2011, at conference room of EDO Health Office, Matiari.

Dr. Muzafar Hussain Samoon Medical Superintendent Matiari Hospital was the Chief Guest of the event while Dr. Abdul Sattar Meer General Secretary PMA was the special Guest of honor.

The program was attended by Doctors, Lady Health supervisors Male and female activists of various NGOs, CBOs, Health Department, District and elites of the city, media personals and people from every walk of life attended the seminar.

In all more than 60 participants attended the Seminar. Dr. Zahid shared that in Pakistan reported HIV positive cases are 7574. However, the WHO/UNAIDS estimates it to 97000. In Sindh the gravity is high and up to September, 2011 the HIV Positive cases are 4130. Out of which 3908 (95%) are male and 222 (5%) are female.

Out of 4130 cases 195 (5%) are AIDS positive and out of 195 cases 144 died (72%). Age group involved is mostly15-45 Years.

The seminar ended with the vote of thanks by Dr. Abdul Sattar Meer, General Secretary PMA.

Walk on the Eve of World AIDS Day

Seminar on Vaccination, Importance and Issues

SHEDS on the eve of World AIDS Day organized an stAwareness Walk on 1 December 2011, started from

Old Campus to Press Club Hyderabad. Male/ female activists of various NGOs, CBOs, Health Department, District and Taluka administration, elites of the city, media personals and people from every walk of life participated in the walk to unite and sensitize masses regarding the hazards of HIV/AIDS.

Addressing the audiences Dr. Zahid Saddar Executive Director SHEDS said that main objective of the this awareness walk is to observe the World AIDS Day celebrated globally on the theme 'Getting to Zero' and

need to create awareness regarding HIV/AIDS, because the main reason of spreading of the disease is lack of awareness and unhealthy practices. He also shared that in Pakistan reported HIV positive cases are 7574. However, the WHO/UNAIDS estimates it to 97000. In Sindh the gravity is high and up to September, 2011 the HIV Positive cases are 4130. Out of which 3908 (95%) are male and 222 (5%) are female. Out of 4130 cases 195 (5%) are AIDS positive and out of 195 cases 144 died (72%) died. Age group involved is mostly15-45 Years.

th for proper vaccination to the targeted group on 16 August 2011 at Taluka Hospital Hala, District Matiari

The main Objectives of the workshop was to refresh the participants regarding vaccination and its importance, sharing of field level issues and its solution for better results to ensure improved working efficiency of Health workers and vaccinators for providing quality vaccine, timely vaccination to the targeted group and to remove misconception and clarification of the issues. Key speaker of the seminar was Dr. Zaheer Ahmed Memon, beside this Dr. Abdul Razzaque Memon Medical Superintendent, Taluka hospital Hala and Ms Shazia also spoke on the event.

In all 60 participants attended the seminar including vaccinators, LHWs, LHS and Midwives. The program ended with a vote of thanks by Khalid Shafee Chairman SHEDS.

PROGRAMS/MEETINGS/TRAININGS SEMINARS ATTENDED

Sindh Aids control program with the collaboration of UNAIDS and Bridge Consultants Foundation conducted a Provincial consultation to develop Sindh AIDS Strategy from 2012 to 2016. The program was held at Institute of Public Research, Bridge on 21 September 2011 at Karachi.

The purpose of the consultation was for understanding of the HIV epidemiology in Sindh and developing strategies for HIV response keeping devolution in mind for next five years. The overall goal was to develop consensus for pro active rather than reactive approach.

Participants from the organizations included Al Nijat Welfare, Mehran Welfare, SBDDS, UNICEF, Women Development Foundation, PAVHNA, SHEDS attended the meeting. From SHEDS Ms. Sadaf Program Officer attended this provincial consultation. The program

ended with the vote of thanks by Dr. Arshad Altaf, Bridge consultant foundation.

A training program was arranged by UNICEF on hand ndcleanliness dated 22 , September, 2011 at Indus Hotel

Hyderabad. The purpose of the training was to develop the capacity of NGOs so that they can transform the knowledge of the community to create awareness among the community.

The training was facilitated by Mr. Qurban Ali and Ms. Irum.

The Oxfam, Hands, SHEDS. SDS and other NGOs attended the event.

From SHEDS Mr. Khalid Shafee Chairman and Mr. Muhammad Ilyas Program Officer attended the training program.

ABAD NGO arranged a meeting on Women rights at thSPO Office on 29 September 2011. The meeting was

facilitated by Ms. Raffia, program coordinator ABAD and Mr. Wahab program officer. The purpose of the meeting was to raise voice against violence against women.

From SHEDS Mr. Muhammad Ilyas Program Officer attended the meeting.

Two days workshop on SPTF, SPM took place at the office of local partner NGO of OPP-OCT at Saeedabad on 7-8 October 2011. Workshop organized by MON-PAK with the help of SEEP Network. The training program was facilitated by Mr. Awais, Regional Microfinance Program Specialist – Plan, Pakistan.

The objective of the meeting was to set standard, and propose guidelines for evaluating whether an institution meets the standard were also discussed at length.

Concluding the two days program Mr. Anwar Rashid Director OPP-OCT said that it is the pleasure that all the participants tried to participate as much as possible and all aspects have been covered. He added it is good that now partners have developed confidence and are eager to learn.

The main Objectives of the workshop was to refresh the participants regarding vaccination and its importance, sharing of field level issues and its solution for better results to ensure improved working efficiency of Health workers and vaccinators for providing quality vaccine, timely vaccination to the targeted group and to remove misconception and clarification of the issues. Key speaker of the seminar was Dr. Zaheer Ahmed Memon, beside this Dr. Abdul Razzaque Memon Medical Superintendent, Taluka hospital Hala and Ms Shazia also spoke on the event.

In all 60 participants attended the seminar including vaccinators, LHWs, LHS and Midwives. The program ended with a vote of thanks by Khalid Shafee Chairman SHEDS.

PROGRAMS/MEETINGS/TRAININGS SEMINARS ATTENDED

Sindh Aids control program with the collaboration of UNAIDS and Bridge Consultants Foundation conducted a Provincial consultation to develop Sindh AIDS Strategy from 2012 to 2016. The program was held at Institute of Public Research, Bridge on 21 September 2011 at Karachi.

The purpose of the consultation was for understanding of the HIV epidemiology in Sindh and developing strategies for HIV response keeping devolution in mind for next five years. The overall goal was to develop consensus for pro active rather than reactive approach.

Participants from the organizations included Al Nijat Welfare, Mehran Welfare, SBDDS, UNICEF, Women Development Foundation, PAVHNA, SHEDS attended the meeting. From SHEDS Ms. Sadaf Program Officer attended this provincial consultation. The program

A training program was arranged by UNICEF on hand ndcleanliness dated 22 , September, 2011 at Indus Hotel

Hyderabad. The purpose of the training was to develop the capacity of NGOs so that they can transform the knowledge of the community to create awareness among the community.

The training was facilitated by Mr. Qurban Ali and Ms. Irum.

The Oxfam, Hands, SHEDS. SDS and other NGOs attended the event.

ABAD NGO arranged a meeting on Women rights at thSPO Office on 29 September 2011. The meeting was

facilitated by Ms. Raffia, program coordinator ABAD and Mr. Wahab program officer. The purpose of the meeting was to raise voice against violence against women.

Two days workshop on SPTF, SPM took place at the office of local partner NGO of OPP-OCT at Saeedabad on 7-8 October 2011. Workshop organized by MON-PAK with the help of SEEP Network. The training program was facilitated by Mr. Awais, Regional Microfinance Program Specialist – Plan, Pakistan.

The objective of the meeting was to set standard, and propose guidelines for evaluating whether an institution meets the standard were also discussed at length.

Concluding the two days program Mr. Anwar Rashid Director OPP-OCT said that it is the pleasure that all the participants tried to participate as much as possible and all aspects have been covered. He added it is good that now partners have developed confidence and are eager to learn.

District Government Hyderabad convened a meeting at thDCO Office, Hyderabad EDO Health Office on 4

Sharing the status of the current situation of polio in Sindh he briefed that there are 19 cases in Sindh in which 01 is in Tando Allahyar, 03 in Thatta, 02 in Tando Mohammad Khan, 01 in Umerkot, and 01 in Hyderabad.

The representative of W.H.O were also present there, other than this EDO community Development Department Mr. Qurban Memon, EDO Finance and Planning Aijaz ul Hasan other officers from Education Department, Police and leading NGOs attended this meeting.

Inauguration ceremony on the Eve of the National campaign for Polio Eradication which was scheduled to be held on 24, 25 & 26 Oct Round was arranged by District Health Department at District Government Hospital Paretabad on 22 October 2011. The Chief Guest of the ceremony was Mr. Zahid Burghery, Member Provincial Assembly, Hyderabad.

Executive District Officer EDO Health Dr. Bux Ali Pitaffi welcome the guests and said that the purpose of this program is to aware community and make the campaign successful so that no any children remain without the administration of polio drops.

The ceremony was attended by the Health Minister, Medical Superintendent DGH Paretabad, WHO, DCO National Program officer Dr. Qaiser, NGOs and Media personnel.

the role of gender in creating special vulnerabilities for women, men and girls which were discussed on both days.

In all 18 participants from different organization participated.

UNHCR with the collaboration of IRC arranged a meeting on Protection working Group at Indus Hotel on 19 October. The rational of the meeting was to discuss the Protection Working Group, 4W mapping, and capacity assessment and to take District updates on Protection Issues.

The facilitators of the program were Ms. Jane Mogeni Protection cluster lead Sindh form UNHCR and Andrew Pugh Protection cluster Co-lead Sindh from IRC.

Organizations which participated included UNICEF, Ehsar foundation; ABCD, ASPR, Sindh Disability Form, Social Industrial Organization, SDPD, Safina Welfare, SHEDS, Sindh Rural Support Program, Management and Development Foundation and other NGOs attended the meeting.

NIP with the collaboration of UNDP conducted Five Days TOT Workshop on Provision of Psycho-Social Counseling to Moonsoon Flood Affectees in Selected

thDistricts of Pakistan at NIP in Islamabad from 28 ndNovember to 2 December. The main objective of the

TOT was to create psychosocial experts that are ready to go in the field and apply interventions that are needed by those affected by the Moonson floods of 2010 and their care givers.

The facilitators of the TOT were Professor Anila Kamal director of NIP, Ms. Raiha Aftab Lecturer, Mr. Naeem Aslam research associate and Ms. Sohema Asad research associate.

In all 30 participants from the various provinces of Pakistan attended the TOT.

The TOT was ended with the quarries and evaluation from the participants. The vice Chancellor of Quaid-e-Azam University Professor Masoom Yasinzai distributed certificates among participants.

N-IRM- with the collaboration of UNDP arranged a three days training on Proposal Development and Resource Mobilization for community Infrastructure working Group (CIWG) of UNDP at N-IRM Jamshoro on

th th8 December to 10 December 2011. The purpose of the training was to build the capacity of the participants to develop proposal and ensure effective resources mobilization. The facilitators of the training were Mr. Khalid Iqbal Khattak and Mr. Israr Hussain Tunio.

The organization who participated in the training program included Qatar Charity, SWWD, NIRM, Bhandar Sangat, SADA, Mashriq Foundation, SYC, RDA, SDDO, IRC, SRSP, SDS, Peace foundation and SHEDS. In all, 19 participants from different organization attended the training.

Association for Betterment and Development of Human Being (ABAD) with the collaboration of TROCAIRE organized a one day seminar on International Human Rights Day at Press club

thHyderabad on 26 December 2011. The rational for organizing the seminar was to give awareness on human rights.

Different NGO, CBOs and people from different walk of life attended the seminar. From SHEDS Ms. Sadaf Alamdar Program officer attended the seminar.

COORDINATION AND COOPERATION

Mr. Aurangzeb from DTCE visited SHEDS in July. The purpose of the visit is to assign the monitoring of LCA in four union counsel of District Tando Allahyar. An orientation session for conducting monitoring was conducted in which seven members from SHEDS participated.

Monitoring of UC Delegates-Local Council Associations- Training workshop

Hand Washing Poster with the collaboration of SPO

DTCE assigned SHEDS to undertake monitoring of the trainings of UC Delegates-Local Council Associations- Training workshop. In this regard formal MOU was signed between DTCE and SHEDS. The trainings were arranged by CCBN Tando Allahyar and were monitored by SHEDS.

In all 188 Participants of the LCA members of five (05) clusters of 19 UCs attended the trainings program.

SHEDS and SPO collaborated and developed a poster on Hand Washing for creating awareness among the community for ensuring the practice of proper way of hand washing.

The poster entails the step wise information regarding hand washing. The first step is to wet the hands properly under running water. Then rub the hands against soap and after that rub the hands against each other. Then rub the one hand on the back of the other hand and between the fingers of both the hands. Then close the fingers and clean it with the help of the palm of other hand.

Grab the thumb from each of the hand one by one from the bottom and clean it with the help of palm. For cleaning nails rub the finger in the circular motion

so the bacteria accumulated can be cleaned away. Wash the hands under running water and let it dry naturally then cleaning with cloth or towel.

In all eight steps are involved in hand washing and for that wash the hands with soap for at least twenty seconds.

rdThe Poster competition was organized on 23 July 2011by SHEDS to enhance and utilize the creative ability of internees and was held at SHEDS office. In all 11 internees of BS/Msc participated in poster

competition. The internees selected different aspects of psychological and social problems of society and presented pictorially. Internees were divided in five groups which also enhanced their ability to work in groups. Ms. Sadaf Alamdar, Clinical Psychologist, Dr. Zahid Saddar Executive Director SHEDS and Mr. Sheeraz Shaikh lecturer Sindh University selected the top three posters among five groups.

Struggle Never Goes UnrewardedMs. Abida Solangi wife of Khan Mohammad aged 32 years resident of Hala Old Taluka New Hala District Matiari comes from a poor family. She has one daughter and she had a dream to have good education to her but the fortune didn't favored her as because of separation from her husband. She struggled day and night and never knocked the door of discouragement and determined to have good quality education. One day she contacted with SHEDS team for having information regarding Micro credit program. SHEDS team briefed her regarding this program and she thought that this program can fulfill her dreams for getting her daughter better education.Abida narrates that I got Loan of rupees 10000 Rs. Ten thousands

thfrom SHEDS on dated 16 February 2010 and started small shop of Laces at my home. I used to pay regular monthly installments and finally cleared my loan dues in the period of one year. I earned enough money from my shop and recycle the amount and purchased different things used for swing and embroidery purpose. Not even this but my daughter is studying in English medium school and we are also passing a happy prosperous life and this is because SHEDS Micro Credit Program. She passes the message for other women that struggle never go unrewarded. By hardworking we can achieve our dreams and destination.
