SMRI’s research headquarters are situated in the small coastal fishing town of Kleinbaai, which is also home to the Great White Shark. Few places on earth carry all the necessary elements needed to create an outstanding marine science initiative that benefits not only the oceans and sharks, but also the local community. The institute hosts students and participants from all over the world to assist with the running of their various shark research projects, which are designed and executed by their dedicated Marine Biologist Mary Rowlinson, who works tirelessly in the field to obtain the necessary baseline data required to comprehend the complex ecosystem along the Kleinbaai/Gansbaai coast. The scientific projects in operation aim to understand the delicate food chain that starts with the smaller endemic shark species and runs all the way up to the iconic Great White Shark.
