3Dear Colleague,

Since we last met, we have been working daily to ensure that our event content is at the forefront of what the SS&O industry is currently grappling with. In 2014, that research uncovered the “Year of the Customer.” While value creation and optimization is still top of mind for the majority of SS&O executives, one challenge came up time and time again as we canvassed the SS&O marketplace during our research. By a landslide, the area that is causing the most headaches - but also the most opportunity - is in talent management.

your employees are your greatest resource. Finding them, engaging them, retaining them, and developing them into the next generation shared services professional is the goal of every shared services leader.

The industry has discussed at length that shared services cannot just be about the transactional and because of that, employees cannot just have a transactional mindset. While acceptable for a starting point within an organization, for the employee base to remain motivated and for the company to continue to thrive, both the company and the employee must look towards the future and have robust strategies in place for career pathing, engagement, and upskilling. While all of these are widely accepted as being necessary, the general consensus is that in practice, they are lacking. With the wider spread use of analytics, digital technologies and the growth into global operations on the horizon, a major talent crunch is looming.

This is why 800+ SS&O executives come to the Shared Services and Outsourcing Week each year. Those who drive the strategy come and learn what strategies are being developed at other companies. Operational professionals are coming to learn what their next step is in their career and to develop a strategic mindset. And with a greater focus in 2015 on analytics, disruptive technologies and process optimization and standardization, this is the best most forward thinking event yet.

sson takes great care in developing an agenda that is FoR the industry, by the industry. we’d like to thank the advisory board for taking an active role in helping guide and shape this year’s agenda:

For the first time ever in our industry, we’re barring sales pitches onstage. this means that you will hear from practitioners on what they’ve done and how they’ve done it, before then speaking to our vendor partners on the best route-to-success.

each practitioner attendee will receive a free 12-month license to shared intelligence, where you can continue the conversations from onsite, 365-days a year, 24/7 plus access ready to use tools and templates – for the practitioner, by the practitioner.

new for 2015, sson has partnered with ceb in order to highlight the complexity of our speaker faculty organizations. that means you’ll be able to select sessions based on how our speakers’ organizations compare to yours. check soon for our complexity chart!

Further, SSON is launching Shared intelligence, the industry’s premier online community exclusive solely to active practitioners. You’ll be able to connect with 3,000 practitioners attending our conferences globally for 12 months, no vendors are allowed access. SI will ensure you meet the right peer at the right time 24/7 365 days a year, whether you’re preparing a business case, needing a process template or org chart or want to canvass opinion on a project. As a practitioner attendee to SS&O Week, you’ll receive a free 12-month license with your ticket.

Why would you miss out on this opportunity? As a shared services professional looking for the next phase in your personal and your company’s journey, you wouldn’t. And so I look forward to welcoming you during Opening Remarks at the Omni Orlando Resort next March. Come for the networking, leave with strategies that will transform your business for the rest of this decade.

Join us in Orlando by registering online at www.sharedservicesweek.com or by calling the team at +1-800-882-8684.

See you in March!

HELLO, aLL PraCTITIONEr-LED PLENarY aND TraCKED SESSIONS...Ever find yourself zoning out the moment you realize someone is selling you something you didn’t ask for? Well, we do – and so do a lot of our customers.

That’s why starting 2015, SSON has done away with vendors taking the stage to pitch their products and replaced it with an all-practitioner led speaker faculty for our plenary and tracked sessions.

This means you’ll get access to a practitioner’s point of view every time you come to one of our events. Your time spent with us will be 100% more effective as you learn from peers about their experiences, lessons learned and their roadmap to success.

Now, don’t get us wrong – our vendors still have a very prominent place at our events, because we know that they provide an enormous amount of value and knowledge for you. (If anything, many of the practitioners you’ll hear from owe their success to a partnership with a solution-provider!)

However, it will be based on your decision when and where to hear from solution-providers – whether through a 1-to-1 meeting to discuss a specific challenge, during a Masterclass or Workshop catering to niche groups or within the Exhibition Hall to get an understand of all the new technology available to empower your success.

It is our primary responsibility to make sure you widen your networks and hear the content you signed up for when you attend an SS&O Week. This is our first step (of many) to stick by our word.

Here’s to a new standard in the events industry for the shared services and outsourcing community.

What are you responsible for in your role?

What is the metric you are most proud of and what was it prior?

What is the most innovative thing you or your team has done?

What one project was your single biggest learning point?

John Gregory Global Finance Lead, GBS kellogg corporation

The Global implementation of GBS for finance and helping move to End to end Process. This is part of a multi-functional global project. Our focus is on moving existing SSCs to a GBS multi-tiered model.

Moving from 0 to 85% electronic invoicing in 18 moths

Reduction of headcount in Finance Shared Services by 30% and moving to balanced scorecard model moving focus beyond cost to Customer service, Quality and Talent Engagement / development.

Creating a Center of Excellence for front office finance activities.

Anthony Lombardi VP and CIO, GBS Armstrong World

Global Information Technology Services; F&A, A/P & A/R for North Am & Europe; and HR shared services for North Am.

All of: Paid-on-time, %payments electronic, DSO, % current, $added to bad debt reserve, transaction quality. Most were not measured before & those that were measured were only North America (except AR metrics.) We are at world class in most of these now globally.

Not earth-shattering… but regular & ongoing globally consistent process change.

Outsourcing… the change management was (and still is) huge! Change Mgmt is the key to success.

Robin Shahani CPO TD Ameritrade

Firm-wide procurement (known as “Supply Management”), the Third-Party Lifecycle Management Program, and COO Organization Strategy & Planning

In Supply Management, we have brought together aspects of the Lean Management System (known internally as “The Better Way”) with Category Management, in order to optimize ecosystem value, rather than focus alone on the rate of, and/or demand for, goods and services.

In a prior role, leading a comprehensive shared services and procurement transformation, while rolling out a new global sub-ledger platform and simultaneously responding to US banking regulators on third-party management issues.

Rick Arpin SVP, Corporate Controller mgm resorts international

Oversight of finance shared services, including revenue accounting, billing, accounts receivable, general accounting, payroll, and accounts payable. treasury. data and reporting COE.

Reducing controllable turnover within the finance shared services center from over 15% to under 10%

Re-engineered the process of distributing and returning banks to cashiers in retail and food and beverage outlets, leading to more accurate cash information and reduced headcount in the operation.

Consolidation of billing and accounts receivable teams from business units into shared services – impact of a great leader and transparent communication with affected team members.

Vijay Rao Global HR Operations Leader Facebook

People Operations globally at Facebook. Includes all of HR operations, Contingent Workforce management, Compliance, and overall employee experience.

Driving adoption of a global recruiting system across 80+ countries; driving satisfaction and adoption at the same time and raising both metrics.

The team branding. When the group was started, we didn’t want to come off as too corporate or as traditional HR organizations position themselves. Hence the team is called the “Peeps” team. Employees email “peeps@” when they need help. It’s helped in building stronger connection with the employees that this isn’t a typical “HR” department.

Being tasked to deliver a new product feature when I was at a start up earlier in my career. I worked more than I’ve ever worked and my life to deliver it, but didn’t ask for help earlier on when I needed it or didn’t let people know that I thought the feature wasn’t going to work as the product wasn’t as flexible as some people led it on to be. I learned that it’s okay to ask for help as well as to speak up and stop the production line if you find a defect that’s going to impact overall quality and user experience.
