This was the premise that led harvey Littleton to see what would happen with molten glass from a small furnace at his first workshop in Toledo in 1962. Now, nearly fifty years later, we witness the result of this beginning which has led to generations of creativity in the Glass Art Movement.

it is the galleries responsibility to bring the most current work to a greater audience in order for the artist to continue to have this freedom to experiment and grow. it is so rewarding to be entrusted with representing the work of world class artists and to witness the expanding creativity and approach to the medium of glass. James Yood, Adjunct Professor of Art history, The-ory, and criticism at the school of the Art institute of chicago and frequent contributor to Glass maga-zine, writes in Dalle Mani del Maestro, that “there are probably no two words more respected and honored in the history of modern sculpture in glass than ‘Lino Tagliapietra’.” The schantz Galleries pay homage to Tagliapietra’s unparalleled position in the field, as well as their own 15-year relationship with the art-ist, with this traveling exhibition and accompanying publication, featuring over 30 works of art in glass completed over the past five years. from his work in filigrana into reticello, zanfirico, and murrine into incalmo, blown or fused glass, Tagliapietra endlessly pushes the possibilities of the medium.

Dalle Mani del Maestro will feature works from the whimsically serpentine fenice, the osaka and fuji vessels with their intricate mosaics, the expressive and landscape-like Venice wall panels, and the elab-orately organic bilbao series. Also exhibited will be classic sculptures like the elegant Angel Tear with impossibly long necks, oblong forms whose flatness is belied by incredible material depth, and many oth-er expertly made, gorgeously colored works.

The 100 page, full color pub-lication vi-brantly repro-duces many of the works on exhibition and features an interpre-tive text by James Yood, a tribute from l o n g - t i m e Tagliapietra assistant and artist David Walters, and a piece by erik D. Demaine and Martin L. Demaine, who worked with Tagliapietra over the past year at the MiT Glass Lab. The 40 page online catalogue is also available at www.schantzgalleries.com

A TriP To PiLchUck

This past August, at the invitation of Lino Tagliapietra, we had the opportunity to visit Pilchuck school.

Pilchuck celebrated it's 40th anniversary this past season by inviting many prominent artists who have helped shape the schools history as a leading center for glass art education.

Among the distinguished faculty there the day we visited were Lino Tagliapietra, bertil Valien, Jiri harcuba and benjamin Moore. Gallery artists Nancy callan, ethan stern and David Walters were working on campus that day as well.

making art happen“i could kick myself , i had the chance to buy a Warhol Sunflower silkscreen for $500, when i was working at ok harris in New York in the 70’s, but could not afford it.” This exclamation from my husband and business partner after i told him the price of an original at a recent auction! There was also the Urn by William Morris, we both loved, still could not afford in 1990. There is a benefit from learning from the experience of others, and since owning this gallery, i have witnessed how some clients acquire work. Put a small deposit down or sell something to a friend, borrow funds, make time payments. We have a few clients who are paying for their art over a period of time, one a school teacher and another who works for a nonprofit organization. As the owner of the gallery, it is always a priority to pay the artist immediately after the sale, so it is important that the client is serious and not going to have a change of heart half way through. We usually like to break payments into 4 or 6 installments, but occasionally, a substantial piece can take longer. it’s really rewarding to be part of the process which allows someone to acquire art and helps support the artist making it. To see or hear of the excitement when they realize they are going to own something that brings such pleasure and the big smile or “YiPPeeee” on the phone from the artist when it sells.

This past summer, there was one particular work of art that i tried to convince three different collectors that i felt it was not only beautiful but an important piece to have in a collection. eventually, i realized that if they were not as interested or enthusiastic as i was, it was a message that i should put my money where my mouth is. so now, we are making payments to the gallery to own this particular piece of work, because we believe in what we represent. If you love a work of art, make it yours.

Beauty Beyond nature, the glass art of Paul stankard is a beautiful new book published by the robert M. Minkoff foundation in

conjunction with Paul’s upcoming exhibition at the museum of glass running November 19 - June 17.

· · · This coming December 7 - 11th, John Kiley will be the visiting artist at the museum of glass in Tacoma, WA. A few days later, John flies east where he is the featured artist at the corning museum of glass on December 15th, demonstrating from 5:30-7:30 pm for their “2300 Degrees” series. it is an event that attracts about 2000-3000 guests for a two hour program that features glass. · · ·This coming february, Dan Dailey: Working Method will be at the fuller craft museum. it will be a 40 year retrospective exhibition of the career of Dan Dailey, with a focus on the various methods and techniques employed by the artist and his team in the production of his ever evolving yet characteristic work.

he also presented a lecture on Arline fisch which included an interview conducted earlier in the year at her studio in san Diego, cA. it is #7 in his Materialism series which includes interviews and lectures on figures such as: Wendell castle, Albert Paley, Patti Warashina, Dale chihuly, William Daley, and Gary knox bennet. he has another lecture coming up November 15, for a class taught by David rosen at The institute for Learning in retirement at harvard University.

· · ·eric hilton is moving forward after the tragic loss of the iconic steuben company, which closed its doors this past month. he and his coworker/friend of 30 years, have secured a number of the unfinished commitments and purchased a large quantity of steuben glass. eric has a impressive portfolio of designs and looks forward to future commissions. Pictured below is the largest sculpture to date made at steuben. it was a commission from the suntory corp in Japan a number of years ago. it typifies the inredible expertise that the working team at steuben possessed. eric did all the sandblasting and the optical elements were made at the factory. it stands over six feet tall and weighs 1.700 pounds.

lino tagliapietra will inaugurate the new chrysler museum Perry family glass studio on November 1st. Lino will also be at the grand opening of the foundation for the carolinas’ at the Luski • Gorelick center for Philanthropy, located at the site formerly occupied by the Mint Museum of craft + Design in uptown charlotte, Nc. Lino has two installations and a bilbao in the permanent collection at the center. The opening celebration will be held on December 1st and 2nd.

· · ·sir elton John purchased work by David walters at his recent feature exhibition in seattle. With references to the fairy tales, integrates his blown vessels and meticulously painted image toward a common theme, in an allegorical and metaphorical style. he works with characters from fairy tales and children’s stories, primarily for their familiar and often sentimental associations.

· · ·alex Bernstein and his wife Jessica, are excitedly awaiting the birth of their first child any day now - due in the next couple of weeks (right around the time of sofA c h i c a g o ) . Alex will be sending his newest work to the gallery soon - some of the last new work for a little while. as he gets used to being a dad!

california Loop series 1968-69 #38, by marvin lipofsky has been acquired by the cantor arts center, stanford University, cA. This coming January, Marvin will exhibit at the crocker museum of art, as well as the Kentucky museum of art and craft 2012: 50 Years of Studio Glass and exhibit in Great Clay & Glass in California 1943-2012, Petaluma arts center, california.

at the museum, and also coincided with Dale’s 70th birthday. This coming february, benjamin will kick - off the visiting artist series at the chrysler museum’s new hot glass studio. he will be working in conjunction with Dante marioni and Janusz Pozniak.

richard royal is finishing up a commission for a private home in colorado. it is a screen, composed of sculpted and blown glass and metal, titled “four seasons”. rich recently finished a lighting installation which was a corporate commission for a seattle systems Management company.

over in the tropics of hawaii, Kait rhoads is teaching glass art at the University of hawaii, Manoa to a

nancy callan’s collaborative work with NYc lighting designer Lindsey Adelman will be featured in an upcoming publication, Lux: Lamps and Lights, published by Gestalten. The book is due out in mid-November. in early April, Nancy will be in residence at the toledo museum of art, with ethan stern.

The two artists will share hot and cold glass working techniques with the community, followed by an exhibition in columbus, oh.

As part of the international cele-bration of the 50th Anniversary of studio Glass, Jay musler will travel to santa fe, Phoenix and Tucson in January to give lectures and dem-os to glass collectors and the glass schools there. in March, he will be the guest artist at the international flameworker’s conference at sa-lem community college in New Jersey.

sidney hutter is part of the exhibition, Traditions and Innovations: fuller craft museum Collects, beginning october 22. The Lampos Gallery will be dedicated to the ongoing exhibition of the Museum’s growing permanent collection. sidney will also show at the Bergstrom mahler museum in Neenah, Wi, called “All that Glitters”, oct 2011-feb 2012. Numerous chicago area glass collectors lent work for the show. Additionally, sid has had a piece donated to the foundation for the carolinas’ at the Luski • Gorelick center for Philanthropy, located

ruth Brockmann just finished a project which was commissioned by the friends of Lincoln city Library for the Driftwood Library in Lincoln city, or. The theme, “Love of Learning” required ocean and sea life imagery. Three fused Glass panels make up the 42x60x 1” composition.

· · ·Jen Violette recently completed a large private installation at a lake home in Minnesota. The commission features a series of hot sculpted glass fruits and vegetables mounted on multiple burnished steel and wood shelves which the artist constructs.
