2. Hansel and Gretel Our chosen fairy taleThe story of Hansel and Gretel is originallywritten by a pair of German brothers named theBrothers Grimm. The story is about a poorfamily, whose mother hatches up a plan toabandon her children in the forest, so that sheand her husband will only have to worry aboutfeeding themselves. The childrens father leadsthem into the forest and leaves them there, tofend for themselves. The children wanderaround for a while, then stumble across amagical house made of gingerbread andcandies. Little do they know a witch inhabits thehouse and plans to lure them in, fatten them upand eat them for dinner. She ends up fatteningup Hansel and keeping Gretel as a slave, butthen, while the witch if checking on the oven,Gretel pushes her into the oven and kills thewitch. They proceed to steal the witches jewelsand are reunited with their father, and livehappily ever after. 3. Initial Research Brainstorming fairy talesBefore we came up with our final idea, we didsome brainstorming of different fairy talesthat we could either adapt, or make into aninteresting trailer. Some of these were:* The Sorcerers Apprentice* The Princess and the Pea* CinderellaThe Frog Prince* The Frog Prince* Sleeping BeautyAlthough we thought that these were great Cinderellastories and some could be very interesting toreplicate, there were reasons that we decidedagainst them. For The Sorcerers Apprentice, wefelt that it would simply be too difficult toportray the magic and enchantment that thestory is so well known for, without it lookingcheap and tasteless. As we dont have the timeor the budget to pull off something as big asThe Princess and the Peathis, we went against this particular fairy tale. 4. Why did we decide against them? The Princess and the Pea is a great story, but we felt that there wasnt muchroom for any kind of manipulation to the story, and again, it came down toa budget and prop issue. We were worried about how much it would takefor us to get the illusion of 100 mattresses when, in reality, we couldprobably only get our hands on one at a time.Cinderella is a classic fairy tale, with a lot of room for a creative outlet, butunfortunately, this story has been done many times before, in manydifferent formats, so us adding to the pile we felt was a little boring and notvery creative at all.The Frog Prince is another one that came down to a prop issue. Again, wecould manipulate the story and make the frog something else, maybe evenhave the princess married to a prince that accidently turns into a frog oneday, but we simply didnt really gel to this idea straight away. If our heartswerent in it, then the making of the media product would just feel like achore that none of us really wanted to do, which, in turn, would created ahalf hearted trailer.Sleeping Beauty is another classic but, like Cinderella, we felt that it hadbeen done one too many times before and we didnt want to createsomething that was just another Sleeping Beauty story. 5. Why Hansel and Gretel? We chose the fairy tale Hansel and Gretel because there has not yet been afilm adaptation, unlike Snow White (Snow White and the Huntsman) or LittleRed Riding Hood (Red Riding Hood). We feel that Hansel and Gretel has beensomewhat neglected in the interest of screen adaptations, so we felt the needto do so. We also thought that Hansel and Gretel would be a great way toshow off artistic creativity and maybe change some elements; either make itmodern, or add a dark twist to the story. We have decided to make a featuretrailer lasting only 1 minute because we feel that we can get across so muchmore about a film in a trailer; as it is such a short amount of time, you have tomake sure that you show enough content that the audience is intrigued, butlittle enough to keep them wanting more and to want to see the film. Makinga trailer will be hard work as we have to put the exact right amount of footagein sticking to the time restrictions, but I think that we will be able to rise up tothe challenge. 6. Red Riding Hood film poster Snow White and the Huntsman film poster 7. How will your media product stand against trailersthat are out there at the moment? In terms of how our media product would do next to all of the other trailers outthere at the moment, I think that ours would kind of force people to think backto their childhoods, maybe back to memories of their parents reading one ofthese fairy tales as a bedtime story. A lot of trailers for films that come outnowadays, there is a lot of action and explosions, car chases and gun fighting. Our trailer would, yes, look maybe a little out of place, but ultimately I think thatit is something that people want, as well as a film that they can take the wholefamily to see.Although there are film out that are completely different to ours, there are somechild friendly films that are out that our trailer would stand great next to, but Ithink that our film would be one that the parents get nostalgic about, thereforethey might want to take their kids to see it just so they have something to watchthat is exciting and appealing for them. They can relate to it as well as teach theirchildren something about their childhood. 8. Examples of mature films that are out now Looper and Taken 2 9. Examples of childrens films that are out now Madagascar 3 and Hotel Transylvania 10. Group RolesAs there are three people in my group and it usually takes more than that to makea film, we had to think carefully about who would play what role in the productionof this media product. We gave out specific roles to each person, but ultimatelywe all aim to work together and help each other out with other things. Our finalrole decision is as follows:Raissa - Editor - The film editor works with the raw footage, selecting shots andcombining them into sequences to create a finished product. This is an extremelyimportant role, as it is the editor that has final say in how the final cut will look. Ofcourse, this being a rather small scale production, we will all have a say into whatgoes into the final cut, but it is Raissas job to make sure that she sticks to theoriginal storyboard as thought out but the group. 11. Group RolesAna - Camera Operator - A camera operator is a professional operator of a film or videocamera. This again is a very important role as the camera operator must adhere to thedirectors instructions in order to get the correct shot. If the camera work isnt of a goodstandard, then the whole vision and general feel of the film can be completely off, and youend up with a less than perfect product. As it isnt practical for only one person to beoperating the camera all the time, we will all take turns practicing with the camera, to makesure that if the main camera operator is off sick, that one of us can still use it.Maheni - Director - A film director is a person who directs the actors and film crew infilmmaking. They also control a films artistic and dramatic aspects. This role I feel is quiteflexible and one that the whole group can contribute on. The director is in charge ofoverseeing the whole production and generally constructing the scenes and the actors inthose scenes, but I feel that this is something that the whole group can be a part of.Other things that everyone is responsible for:Producing Sorting out a budget, location etc.Operating the camera In a worse case scenarioDirecting Helping by contributing artistic advice to the scenes and actors to make a betterquality product
