Since 1967 the Simon Fraser University Camps Program has been committed to serving its participants and ensuring a positive experience is had by all. In addition to providing an extensive array of camps, the program provides leadership opportunities for high school and university students, making it an inclusive, industry leading Program. The SFU Camps Program strives for excellence in all program areas and prides itself on being a leader in program safety, camp selection and instructor quality. The Camps Program fosters creativity, enhances skills and cultivates lasting memories for its participants through athletic, recreational and educational experiences.

a b o u t o u r c a m p s SPORT CAMPS Sport Camps offer quality instruction by SFU’s varsity athletes and highly regarded coaching staff (where available). Participants will receive instruction in all aspects of the sport, including development drills and scrimmages. Some Sport Camps may include skill evaluation summaries, prizes, t-shirts, balls and giveaways. ReCReATiOnAl & eduCATiOnAl CAMPS Recreational and Educational Camps are instructed by highly trained and enthusiastic university and high school students. The camps are well rounded, offering a mix of educational and recreational opportunities. They include a variety of activities that use SFU facilities, plus academic labs and classrooms. Some camps include swimming, field trips and large scale activities that occur each Friday (these activities may include special events, presentations and water fights). PARTneRSHiP CAMPS SFU provides a range of camps that are operated in partnership with various community organizations or professionals. These camps follow the same general administration procedures as all SFU camps, however staffing is provided by the partner organization. These camps utilize SFU facilities and may include recreation time, and SFU Camps Program t-shirts

V o Lu N t E E r o p p o r t u N I t I E s Volunteer with the SFU Camps Program for an awesome summer experience. There are numerous opportunities for individuals who are interested in volunteering with the SFU Camps Program. Volunteers must be dedicated, enthusiastic and at least 14 years old. Fac I L I t I E s Simon Fraser University sits atop Burnaby Mountain, with majestic views of the North Shore mountains, ocean and the Lower Mainland. The Camps Program has access to three gyms, tennis courts, squash and racquetball courts, dive tank, swimming pool, archery range, 400 meter track, four fields and a lot of outdoor space. In addition, sophisticated labs and classrooms will be used for Mini-University, Computer Camp, and Science AL!VE camps.

Twenty-minute courtesy parking is available for drop-off and pick-up in the Visitor Parkade adjacent to the gym. Full details on parking and drop-off/pick-up procedures will be included in your registration confirmation letter

p r E / p o s t c a m p c a r E This option is not included in the price of your camp. If you would to like to purchase either a pre- or post-camp care session, please include this request in your registration. The additional fee for Pre-camp Care is $30 per week and Post-camp Care is $35 per week. Please indicate which weeks you require when you register. Please note: if you do not pick up your child by 17:30, a charge of $15 for each additional 30 minutes (or part thereof) will apply. For campers nOT registered for Post-camp Care who have not been picked up by 15:45, a $35 fee for the week will apply.

b a s k E t b a L L F o r G I r L s ( 7 - 17 Y E a r s ) Considered to be among the best in Canada, these camps are taught by highly-motivated SFU student-athletes who provide excellent instruction and are quality role models for younger players. Courtney Gerwing (current assistant coach and former SFU Women’s basketball player and winner of the Sylvia Sweeney Award in 2009 for excellence in athletics, community service and academics) will lead the camps with the help of current SFU Women’s basketball co-captain Kristina Collins and other members of the Clan.

BASkeTBAll BASiCS (12–15 yeARS) This camp is designed for young players who want to learn the fundamentals necessary to be a good basketball player. Athletes will get a well rounded schedule of offensive and defensive skills as well as have a chance to compete against each other. Skill develOPMenT CAMP (13–18 yeARS)For high school players who want to advance their skill level. We offer a demanding training environment that is catered to the player seek ing to compete at the collegiate level. Players will be exposed to the next level of basketball as well as introducing prospective student athletes to Simon Fraser University. An NCAA info session and weight training introduction included. Camps are designed to improve the technical and tactical abilities of basketball players. Our goal is for participants to be challenged individually while in a group setting.

After a challenging day on the field, campers experience campus life as they enjoy a wide range of activities that include swimming, gym games, a campus tour and more. Camp registration includes: accommodation, daily meals, Harrow reversible practice jersey, t-shirt, water bottle and the chance to win Harrow product / equipment. FOOTBAll CAMP Where the best come to learn! For 27 years this full-contact camp has developed the character and the skill of young football players. Campers will receive the best in coaching and facilities. In three days there will be a total of six practices, leading to a controlled game/scrimmage on the last day. Campers will need a full set of football gear (rentals available) from a school or community program. Every athlete will receive a crested camp jersey and report card. The registration confirmation letter provides a list of required equipment/items. nOTe: Participants must have a completed SFU Athletics and Recreation medical form with doctor’s signature prior to the start of camp. This form can be obtained from the website at: www.sfu.ca/camps. Please note: Registration for the camp and for accommodations are separate. Dorms are only available for participants who are coming from OUT OF TOWN. If you live within an approx. 50km radius of the campus and you are interested in staying overnight you will need to call us at 778-782-4965 and we will put you on the waitlist. This camp gives participants the chance to develop their skills under the instruction of top qualified coaches in a vibrant, friendly environment. G o L F ( 4 – 15 Y E a r s ) These golf camps are run in partnership with Eaglequest Golf Courses. The meeting point for these camps are at the Golf Courses themselves. Our CPGA - certified professionals are well trained to work with juniors, keeping the emphasis on fun while learning. The half day golf camps do not provide transportation to SFU campus. If you would like to combine a golf camp with another SFU Burnaby half day camp you will be responsible for bringing your child to the campus for their camp. *Golfers are grouped by age and skill level.

r o w I N G ( 14 – 18 Y E a r s ) An exciting opportunity to learn the sport of rowing from members of the competitive SFU Rowing team. Beginners and experienced rowers will benefit from this camp. They will learn to row on the waters of Burnaby Lake. Skills and technique, rowing terminology, boat and equipment knowledge will be taught. Specific physical training for the sport will be introduced, as well as fun cross-training activities, nutrition, preparation for further pursuit in rowing, and vital knowledge for a healthy lifestyle. nOTe: Location is at Burnaby Lake Rowing Pavilion: 6871 Roberts St., Burnaby, BC. Participate in some of the drills that make our athletes so successful. Learn mental training techniques to sharpen your focus when you play and get a taste of what university life is all about by attending a class in one of our Mini-University subjects. Varsity student-athletes and selected elite alumni round out the high-caliber coaching staff. This camp is highly recommended for team participation. The more team mates you register the less each player pays. The price is set per team and you must have a minimum of 14 players and a maximum of 20 players. s o F t b a L L COllege exPeRienCe CAMP - live-in & COMMuTeR OPTiOnS (giRlS 12–17 yeARS) A week-long college experience for campers, giving them the opportunity to experience college life, living in SFU dorms, eating meals in SFU dining facilities, and receiving college caliber training. While the camp’s focus is on elite development, it will also be about the experience that one can only get by residing high atop Burnaby Mountain on the SFU campus. In addition to technical softball training there will be sessions on speed and power development; mental training; and exposure to specially designed, interactive university academic classes. Campers will benefit from an opportunity to train in the same environment that produced four NAIA national championship softball teams, nine NAIA regional championships in the past 12 years, and also helped develop eleven SFU athletes who have gone on to compete in the Olympic Games. Camp instruction is by SFU head coach and former Olympic coach Mike Renney and a staff of current and former athletes.

The live-in component includes four nights in the SFU residence and three meals per day (two meals on Monday and Friday). The commuter component includes a lunch each day.

These camps cover the basics, including hitting, bunting, throwing, catching, fielding, base running and sliding. Mike Renney (head coach softball) organizes these camps and provides varsity-student athletes for instruction. Watch for camps in Surrey and on the North Shore. Campers will learn the basic FUNdamentals that allow them to serve, rally, play at the net, and score quickly. SFU Tennis Programs are proud to endorse Tennis Canada ‘Progressive Tennis’ Approach. This uses modified tennis balls, nets, and courts to suit the various ages and sizes of the participants. Emphasis will be on Fun, Improvement, and building positive relationships with peers and coaches. All camps are led by Tennis Canada certified instructors. H a L F daY c a m p s This is a great option if you are looking to combine with another half day camp. A lot of our sports camps are only half days, you could complement it with a second sports camp, a multi-sport camp, a recreation camp, or any half day of your choice.

Regardless of what time your child’s morning camp ends, or your child’s afternoon camps begins, he or she will be supervised during the lunch break. If you are not signed up for two half days you will need to drop off/pick up you child for the start and end times of those programs (no lunch time supervision is provided for those campers not participating in two half day camps). L I F E s aV I N G ( 13+ Y E a r s ) This camp is designed to further lifesaving skills. This camp combines two advanced lifesaving awards: Bronze Medallion and Bronze Cross with a CPR ‘C’ award. Participants will perform challenging water rescues, learn First Aid, CPR and develop aquatic endurance. Bronze Cross can earn you 2 credits for grade 11. Sea Turtle (Beginner) For beginners to swimming, participating without a parent. This level is an introduction to skills in swimming, glides, and floating and builds awareness of deep water and safe entries.

Salamander Preschoolers actively learn new swimming skills including assisted floats and glides through games and songs. The fun includes learning to jump into chest deep water.

Sunfish Preschoolers work on stroke and skill progressions. Learning also focuses on good judgement in, on and around the water, and entries and floats in deep water.

Crocodile Preschoolers start independent glides and kicking in deep water. Endurance is built through increasing distance for front and back swims. Swimmers learn about the dolphin kick and try synchro skills in the water.

Swim kids 1 (Beginner) This entry level provides children with an orientation to the water and the pool area and introduces floats and glides with kick.

Swim kids 2 This level builds skills in front and back swims. Children are introduced to deep water activities and proper use of a personal flotation device. Endurance is built on flutter kick and glides.

Swim kids 3 This level introduces proper front crawl and develops a foundation for making wise choices on where and when to swim. Diving is introduced and students work on floats, changing direction and a 15-metre swim.

Swim kids 4 In this level, children further develop the front crawl, back glide and shoulder roll for back crawl. They work on dives, surface support and endurance with a 25-metre swim.

Swim kids 5 In this level, the back crawl is introduced, along with sculling skills and whip kick on the back. There is an introduction to safe boating skills and endurance is developed through dolphin kick and a 50-metre swim.

Swim kids 6 This level continues to refine front and back crawl and elementary backstroke is introduced. Children are also introduced to the rescue of others with throwing assists. Dives and treading water are improved and endurance is developed through a 75-metre swim.

Swim kids 7 This level continues to build skills and endurance for front crawl and elementary backstroke and introduces whip kick on the front. Students learn about airway and breathing obstructions. Endurance is built by taking part in timed treading water and a 150-metre swim.

Swim kids 8 This level introduces the breaststroke, foot-first surface dives and rescue entries. Students learn about the dangers of open water, hypothermia and the performance of rescue breathing. Endurance is built on the dolphin kick and 300-metre swim.

Swim kids 9 Front crawl, back crawl and breaststroke continue to be refined in this level. Children are encouraged to combine different strokes and kicks for fitness. Work on shallow and standing dives continues along with learning about wise choices, peer influences and self-rescue from ice. Endurance is built through a 400-metre swim.

Swim kids 10 Further refinement of strokes, with an introduction to butterfly and scissor kick highlight this level. Children learn about sun safety and head- and feet-first surface dives. Endurance is built using butterfly drills and a 500-metre swim.

a H E a Lt H Y Lu N c HThe SFU Camps Program and Renaissance Coffee on Burnaby campus team up to make your life easier, by providing your camper with a nutritious lunch during camp. Lunch includes a sandwich, drink and granola bar.

There will also be a concession open daily in the lunch area of the central gym lobby. It is open daily during SFU Summer Camps.

By mail: Send full payment by cheque, money order, Visa or MasterCard and the registration form to: SFU Camps Program, Recreation & Athletics, 8888 University Drive, Burnaby, BC V5A 1S6. Please make cheques payable to “Simon Fraser University” (no post-dated cheques please).

ReFundS If a program does not fill to its minimum required capacity one week prior to its start, SFU Athletics & Recreation reserve the right to cancel the program and to refund program fees in full.

If the participant needs to withdraw from a program: * 100% refund (less a 15% administration fee per program) will be issued for each program cancellation one or more weeks prior to program start.

* No refunds will be issued for a withdrawl from a program with less than one week notice prior to the start date.

*A refund may be considered based on the following:

1. Receipt of written medical recommendation from a doctor. If the program has not commenced a full refund (less a 15% administration fee per program) will be issued. If the program has commenced a pro-rated refund (less a 15% administration fee per program) will be issued based on the number of days the participant has attended.
