from the field hollers and work songs of the american South through the era of civil disobedience and into the 21st century, african american music has expressed myriad forms of cultural resistance. in this special series honoring Black history month, we will highlight the many secular oral traditions that paved the way for contemporary music in the united States, exploring the lineage of rural forms and their impact on urban life and culture. Join Bay area vocalist and cultural historian linda tillery along with celebrated guest artists for a look at the music behind the movements—from emancipation to civil rights, and from song to spoken word.

throughout the history of jazz, women have played a major part in the development and evolution of america’s art form despite facing extreme discrimination as well as an undeniable lack of advocacy among historians and critics. often toiling away in the background while their male counterparts reveled in the limelight, women instrumentalists, composers, and arrangers were seldom acknowledged for their equally prolific and transformative work, needing to fight twice as hard for acceptance among their male counterparts. from lil armstrong’s careful crafting of husband louis’ career to Bessie Smith’s unprecedented popularity, mary lou Williams’ groundbreaking compositions, and maria Schneider’s exquisite arranging and conducting, we will trace the extraordinary accomplishments of america’s blues and jazz women and highlight the shifting paradigm for women in contemporary society.

JAzz IN ThE mIDDlE (JIm)

Established in 2001, the Jazz in the middle (Jim) program provides public middle school students with curriculum-based residencies, linking jazz and academic subjects in the 6th, 7th and 8th grade classroom. Jim was created by SfJaZZ in partnership with the San francisco unified School District (SfuSD) to address the need for arts education in middle schools. offered free to public middle schools, the Jim curriculum complies with government guidelines and district content standards, and extends into the classroom, where SfJaZZ artist/Educators engage students in a process of creative transformation.

JAzz IN sEssION (JIs)the Jazz in Session (JiS) program collaborates with SfuSD schools in strengthening existing jazz programs as well as fostering continued expansion through teacher support, hands-on clinics, and professional development for school faculty, band directors and administrators. the goals of the program include our efforts to support the District’s “arts Education master Plan” in making music instruction—in particular jazz music education—accessible to a significant portion of the San francisco public school population.
