In the name of the Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer, Amen.

Sisters and Brothers, I have good news! How we live, and what we do every day,matters. How we live and what we do matters to youit matters to the person sitting next

to youit matters to your neighborsit matters to your colleaguesit matters to peoplewho live half way around the world that you dont even knowand how we live, and whatwe do, matters to God.

Our good news comes from the epistle of James. We will read passages fromJames each Sunday this month. Even so, James has somewhat of a bad reputation in theReformed tradition. The epistle comes across as simple. It places an uneasy emphasis onwhat some call worksrighteousness, which is the idea that one earns Gods love throughwhat one doesthrough their behavior. Luther had very little time for James because ofthis and called it the Epistle of Straw. Luther thought it was hollow.

Even after taking all of this into account, however, I think James has someimportant things to say. We hear an important reminder from him this morning when hewrites, Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.James instruction to do might have lead Luther to be suspicious of James. At the sametime, I cant help but hear Luthers famous statement, A Christian is a free lord, subject tonone. A Christian is a perfectly dutiful servant, subject to all. We are at once free to livehow we think we should, and yet, how we live matters to others.

How we live and what we do every day matters. Do what Gods word says. Dontjust think, reflect, or talk about Gods love for us through Christ in abstract ways. Do it.Live it out in your livesevery single day. In doing so, you love your neighbor, give lifeto Gods Word, and bear witness to this love.

James offers us a simple message this morning, and sometimes that is just what weneed. Our lives can often be busy, stressful, and complicated. Sometimes it is good to heara simple reminder that how we live, and what we do, every day of the week, matters toGod.

There is an important aspect of this to pick up on as we seek to do what the gospel

of Jesus Christ says. What we do every single day in our ordinary lives matters to Godnot just what we do on Sundays.

It matters to God that on Sunday night you are quick to listen to your loved ones. Itmatters to God that on Monday morning you are slow to anger because you disagree with adecision at work. It matters to God that on Tuesday afternoon you offer support to a friendover lunch. It matters to God that on Wednesday you extend mercy and compassion inyour volunteer service at the local hospital or soup kitchen. It matters to God that onThursday, Friday, and Saturday you are again slow to anger and quick to listen to thosewhom you love.

It matters to God that when you leave these doorsfrom Monday thru Saturdayyou live out the good news you hear here. In fact, what we do during the week should leadus to come to church on Sundays. We should be ready to come to church not because thisis where God lives and where we encounter God.

We should be ready to come to church on Sundays, because we are tired fromdoing, and church is a place where we come to be renewed. We should anticipate Sundayas a time-out during our busy livesa time to be forgiven for the times during the weekwhen we might have been a little too quick to anger, or a little too slow to listena time tobe reminded of why we do what we doa time to hear the good news of Gods grace andlove for us. We should leave here renewed so that, through Gods grace, we might be able

to follow James advice, and do what Gods word says.

Sisters and brothers, how we live, and what we do every day, matters. It matters tothose around us and it matters to God. How we live matters not because it assures us of oursalvation or righteousness, because it doesnt. Rather, how we live matters simply becauseit affirms Gods love for not only us, but also for the entire world.

En el nombre del Creador, Redentor y Sustentador, Amn.

Hermanas y hermanos, tengo buenas noticias! La forma en que vivimos, y lo

que hacemos todos los das, es importante. La forma en que vivimos y lo que hacemos

es importante para ti... le importa a la persona que est sentada a tu lado... le importaa tus vecinos... le importa a tus colegas...le importa a la gente que vive al otro lado del

mundo que incluso no conoces... y cmo vivimos, y lo que hacemos, es importante

para Dios.

Nuestra buena noticia viene de la epstola de Santiago. Vamos a leer pasajes de

Santiago cada domingo de este mes. Aun cuando, Santiago tiene algo de mala fama en

la tradicin reformada. La carta viene a ser tan simple. Se pone una inquietud de

nfasis en lo que algunos llaman la obra de justicia, que es la idea de que uno se gana

el amor de Dios a travs de lo que uno hace... a travs de su comportamiento. Lutero

tuvo muy poco tiempo para Santiago debido a esto lo llam el "epstola de paja".

Lutero pens que era vaca.

Incluso despus de tomar todo esto en cuenta, sin embargo, creo que Santiago

tiene algunas cosas importantes que decir. Omos un recordatorio importante de l

esta maana, cuando escribe: "No se contenten slo con escuchar la palabra, pues as

se engaan ustedes mismos. Haz lo que dice. "Instruccin de Santiago para" hacer

"podra dar lugar a Lutero a sospechar de Santiago. Al mismo tiempo, no puedo

dejar de escuchar la famosa frase de Lutero: "Un cristiano es un seor libre, sujeto a

nadie. Un cristiano es un siervo perfectamente obediente, sin perjuicio de todos.

"Estamos a la vez libres de vivir como pensamos que deberamos, y sin embargo,

cmo vivimos le importa a los dems.

Cmo vivimos y lo que hacemos cada da importa. Haz lo que dice la palabra

de Dios. No se limite a pensar, reflexionar, o hablar acerca del amor de Dios para con

nosotros en Cristo de una manera abstracta. Hazlo. Vvalo hasta el final de su vida...

todos los das. Al hacer esto, usted ama a su prjimo, le da vida a la Palabra de Dios y

da testimonio de este amor.

Santiago nos ofrece un sencillo mensaje esta maana, y a veces eso es justo loque necesitamos. Nuestra vida puede ser a menudo ocupada, estresante y complicada.

A veces es bueno escuchar un simple recordatorio de que nuestra forma de vivir, y lo

que hacemos, todos los das de la semana, le importa a Dios.

Hay un aspecto importante de esto a retomar a medida que tratamos de hacer lo que

el Evangelio de Jesucristo, dice. Lo que hacemos todos los das en nuestras vidas

ordinarias le importa a Dios... no slo lo que hacemos los domingos.

Es importante para Dios la noche del domingo que se apresuran a escuchar a

sus seres queridos. Es importante para Dios que el lunes es usted lento para enojarse,

porque no est de acuerdo con una decisin en el trabajo. Es importante para Diosque el martes en la tarde usted ofrece apoyo a un amigo durante el almuerzo. Es

importante para Dios que el mircoles extiende misericordia y compasin en su

servicio voluntario en el hospital local o comedor. Es importante para Dios que el

jueves, viernes y sbado se vuelve lento a la ira y pronto para or a los que amas.

Es importante para Dios cuando salga de estas puertas ... de lunes a sbado ...

viva hasta el fin las buenas nuevas que escuche aqu. De hecho, lo que hacemos

durante la semana debe llevarnos a venir a la iglesia los domingos. Debemos estar

listos para entrar a la iglesia, no porque aqu es donde Dios vive y donde encontramos

a Dios.

Debemos estar dispuestos a ir a la iglesia los domingos, porque estamos

cansados de hacer, y la iglesia es un lugar donde llegamos a ser renovados. Debemos

anticipar el domingo como un tiempo de espera durante nuestras vidas tan

ocupadas... un tiempo para ser perdonado por los tiempos durante la semana en la

que pudo haber sido un poco demasiado rpido para la ira, o un poco demasiado lento

para escuchar ... una vez que se le recuerde de por qu hacemos lo que hacemos ... un

tiempo para escuchar las buenas nuevas de la gracia y el amor de Dios por nosotros.

Tenemos que salir de aqu renovados para que, a travs de la gracia de Dios, podamos

ser capaces de seguir el consejo de Santiago, y hacer lo que la Palabra de Dios dice.

Hermanas y hermanos, cmo vivimos, y lo que hacemos todos los das, esimportante. Es importante para los que nos rodean y le importa a Dios. Como vivimos

es importante, no porque nos asegura nuestra salvacin o la justicia, porque no es as.

Ms bien, nuestra forma de vivir es importante simplemente porque afirma el amor

de Dios, no slo para nosotros, sino tambin para el mundo entero. Amen.
