SABBATH
. This is the frst Sunday o our stewardship season and our theme this year isliving a proportionate li e-looking at Bibli al stewardship as way o re-ordering ourlives to re!e t "od#s priorities
$e as a ongregation need to be giving more o our money and talents to do abetter %ob at being our brother and sisters keeper here in &hiladelphia and
on retely aring or those in need throughout the world. $e need to be a tivelylooking or the a e o 'esus in the least o these. $e need to in rease our programbudget to grow our priorities around edu ation( hildren and youth. $e need totake are o this ama)ing san tuary( that serves as a light and mission post in this
ommunity.
But * am not going to talk about any o those things. Today
* am a ter something more ontroversial than your money-* want to talk about yourtime.
And * am not trying to get you to volunteer or sign-up or anything-so * am notpersonally a ter your time-But "od is
'esus is o ten portrayed as o+ering a radi ally new approa h to "od as opposed tothe 'ewish pra ti es o his time. &arti ularly when they atta k 'esus or healing onthe Sabbath( the &harisees and the s ribes ome o+ looking like legalisti hypo riteswho are more on erned with the proper observan e o ustoms and ritual-than the
needs o "od#s people. $hen 'esus states in ,ark that humans were not reatedor the Sabbath( but the Sabbath or humans-we are tempted to think o 'esus as a
revolutionary-but he is not. 'esus# emphasis on the spirit o the law as opposed tothe letter makes him a good 'ew. 'esus understands what "od was up to in "enesis1 and his on ronting the religious olks o his day was part o his way to get themto understand what "od really ares about
The trouble with most modern ollowers o 'esus is that we tend to get neither theletter nor the spirit right on erning how we should be living the gi t o theSabbath prin iple
