32 CELEBRATING 30 YEARS OF BAROQUEAUSTRALIAN BRANDENBURG ORCHESTRA SEASON 2019

BEN DOLLMAN

The Australian Brandenburg Orchestra celebrates the music of the sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth centuries with excellence, flair and joy.

PLANNING FOR THE NEXT 30In nearly 30 years, the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra has grown from a glimmer in its founders’ eyes and two inaugural concerts at the Sydney Opera House to achieve a national presence and widespread international recognition for its artistic success.

To know the Brandenburg is to go back in time, but to view the old through a modern lens – it’s this vibrant and relevant approach to Baroque and Classical music that brings immense joy and delight to live audiences of more than 54,000 people each year, plus countless more through national and international broadcasts.

A CULTURE OF GENEROSITY AND A COMMITMENT TO FOSTERING TALENTFundamentally, the Brandenburg is generous – imbuing its performances with palpable warmth, opulence and connection that give the sense, as an audience member, of having received a beautiful gift. Springing from this generosity of spirit, the Brandenburg constantly seeks out and fosters extraordinary new talent, and the international careers of many outstanding soloists have been propelled through collaboration with the Brandenburg. Sopranos Sara Macliver and Taryn Fiebig, countertenor Max Riebl and – more recently, Madison Nonoa – are such examples, as are instrumentalists Brendan Joyce, Jamie Hey, Melissa Farrow and Shaun Lee-Chen.

AUSTRALIA’S ONLY NATIONAL, PERIOD-INSTRUMENT ORCHESTRAThe orchestra’s reach is truly national, with an annual concert series in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, a commitment to performing in regional Australia, and – with the establishment of the Brandenburg Quartet – regular concerts in Adelaide, Perth and Wollongong.

MULTI AWARD-WINNING, RAVE REVIEWS AND AN INTERNATIONAL PRESENCEThe Brandenburg’s accolades include five ARIA Awards for Best Classical Album as well as an array of other industry awards, including the Helpmann Award for Best Chamber Concert (2016) and the Sidney Myer Major Performing Arts Group Award (2015). Internationally, the Brandenburg has performed to rapturous audiences at the London Proms plus concerts in Austria, France and Germany (2001) and in Tokyo (1998).

BIG VISIONLooking ahead to the next 30 years, the Brandenburg is dreaming big about what more can be achieved and, importantly, how to continue to make a meaningful and exciting contribution to the Australian and international community long into the future.

It’s a big vision and an untiring passion that has powered the Brandenburg’s successes and contributions to Australian cultural life over the past 30 years.

5CELEBRATING 30 YEARS OF BAROQUE

PAUL DYER

Imagining what a Baroque orchestra of the future might be has led my artistic inspiration for 2019 – the Brandenburg’s 30th season.

In 2049, thirty years from now, what will the role of an orchestra be? Where will we perform? What will we wear? Will we still perform to live audiences in the calm of a concert hall? Or will technology play a larger role we can barely dream of today?

I have a deep love of our musical past, but I’m also absolutely fascinated by the possibilities of the future. I was reading up on some trends that many futurists believe are not only possible, but are likely, and I’ve considered how they might affect the art of live music-making. Here are my top three.

Machines could start thinking like humans from 2025. The human ability to produce uniquely exquisite art is a fundamental difference that distinguishes us from machines. But, could a computer compose something as profound and personal as Bach’s Chaconne for solo violin? What would it mean for us if, one day, a machine succeeds?

We could live in a Matrix-like simulated world by 2045. The thought of living in a simulated world is exciting and terrifying. But how would this translate to the concert stage. Could a conductor or a musician be beamed down onto the stage or into a living room like a scene from a sci-fi film?

Space tourism could be possible in 2050 for the uberwealthy. These tourists will surely want brilliant entertainment and art. So will musicians have performance opportunities in space?

For the moment, our 2019 Brandenburg series will be on planet Earth, without beaming or streaming, and will reveal the amazing creativity and talent of the human spirit – performed by men and women, not machines. Bringing period music to audiences across the country and throughout the world is a privilege and an honour. Thirty years on since it all began, the Brandenburg is in a beautiful place thanks to the many gifted artists, board members, administrative staff, and the audiences who love us and the music we play.

I believe that in the right hands Baroque music has a brilliant future ahead – whether it be streamed or beamed!

BRUCE APPLEBAUM

7CELEBRATING 30 YEARS OF BAROQUE

The company’s 30th Anniversary season allows a rare moment to reflect – and then drive energetically forward.

Welcome to the 2019 subscription year – the company’s 30th season. In the 30 years since its foundation, the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra has made a significant contribution to the cultural and musical fabric of our country and I am often amazed and humbled by what we have achieved.

Under Paul Dyer’s dynamic and passionate artistic leadership, we have drawn together specialist period musicians from around Australia and all over the world to present the music of the sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth centuries with brio and verve. It is an ongoing inspiration to work beside the best musicians, creatives and artists in the industry and to watch a simple seed of an idea bloom into a successful production before an appreciative audience.

In addition to our loyal subscribers and audience members, the stewardship of our board of directors and the generous support provided by our private donors and corporate partners have made all that we have achieved possible. This heartfelt support is vital to both our present and our future, and has allowed us to build a company with a tremendous reputation as one of the world’s great period orchestras. Government support through the Australia Council for the Arts and Create NSW has also been integral to the success of the company. It has provided us with a stable financial footing to make the long term strategic planning and necessary investments required to run a professional orchestra possible.

This very special 30th Anniversary season is marked by all the splendour and celebration you would expect of such an auspicious occasion. Paul Dyer has curated a season that showcases our country’s wonderfully talented local musicians and explores the next generation of artists. The future is bright for the Brandenburg and we have some big plans for the years ahead. Expect to hear more in the coming months about the Centre for Baroque Excellence which will act as a new multi-purpose home for the company and serve the broader community with a state-of-the-art facility to learn, explore and interact with the rich art of Baroque music and of historically informed performance. Stay tuned for more details on this inspiring project.

I look forward to celebrating with you throughout 2019 for our 30th Anniversary.

The Four Seasons

Inspired by four sonnets depicting rustic scenes from the Italian countryside, The Four Seasons challenges musicians to create striking musical impressions. The identity of the sonnets’ author is lost. The music the words inspired however is synonymous with The Red Priest – Antonio Vivaldi.

Georg Philipp Telemann’s Wassermusik is an imaginative orchestral suite in ten vibrant movements. This programmatic work evokes vivid nautical images from a remote mythological past of wrathful sea gods, mischievous water nymphs and the rulers of the winds.
