This RPO heavyweight passenger car is two-tone green with white lettering and runs on 6-wheel pas-senger trucks. Built by the Pressed Steel Car Company in 1914 for Northern Pacific, this heavyweight Railway Post Office was painted in the classic two-tone green paint scheme developed by Raymond Loewy. It continued to serve NP through the mid-1960s.

This 89’ tri-level closed autorack is yellow with white roof and black lettering and runs on Barber Roller Bearing trucks. Built by National Steel Car in 1976, this 89’ enclosed autorack design became the universal standard for most railroads. Commonly used to this day, the design prevented vandalism and pilferage and helped to protect vehicles from the elements.

This 40’ double-sheathed wood reefer with vertical brake wheel is brown with grey decorated sides and runs on Bettendorf trucks. Built in March 1926, this North Western Refrigerator Line owned reefer was assigned to Stokely Brothers and Company in the early 1930s, receiving a new paint job and reporting marks.

These 50’ standard boxcars with single door are brown with white lettering and run on Roller Bearing trucks. These 4895 cubic foot capacity boxcars were built in 1957 and displayed a new paint scheme for Southern Pacific to showcase the “Hydra-Cushion” underframe and DF loader systems.

This 3-bay covered hopper is white with black lettering and runs on Barber Roller Bearing trucks. Built in 1978 by Evans Railcar, this three-bay covered hopper had a 200,000 pound capacity. Erie Western was established in 1977 and operated 158 miles of track from Ohio to Indiana until 1979 when the railroad ceased operation.

This RPO heavyweight passenger car is Pullman green with gold lettering and runs on 6-wheel passenger trucks. It was built in 1928 by the Bethlehem Steel shops and served the Southern Railroad on many pas-senger trains through the mid-1960s before being sidelined and transferred to a museum.

This 33’ twin bay hopper with offset sides is black with white lettering and runs on Bettendorf trucks. Belonging to a series of nearly 1500 cars, this 2,260 cubic foot capacity two-bay hopper was rebuilt in 1967 by Reading. The Reading Railroad was one of the most famous anthracite coal shippers in the northeast United States. After the decline of coal following WWII, Reading began a slow decline and eventually declared bankruptcy in 1971.

This 33’ twin bay hopper with offset sides is black with white lettering and runs on Bettendorf trucks. Built by Pullman-Standard in 1949, this car was built to AAR standard twin-bay hopper plans and had a 100,000 pound capacity. The Gulf, Mobile & Ohio was a Class I railroad that ran from Alabama to Illinois from 1917 to 1972.

These SD40-2 powered locomotives are black with red nose and white stripe. Built in August 1973 for Missouri Pacific, this SD40-2 was transferred to Union Pacific in the 1982 merger. In the mid-1990s it was acquired by Canadian National and repainted as a class GF-30v unit. The EMD SD40-2 is a 3,000 horsepower, turbocharged locomotive with electronic control systems built from 1972 to 1989 with nearly 4,000 units produced.

Maintaining miles and miles of track is a never ending task for railroads. Mechanical tie loaders ride atop gondolas, picking up discarded ties next to the repaired sections of track. Tie loaders are equipped with clamping and lifting hydraulics that allow the tie loader to move from one car to the next as the MOW train moves forward.
