KAŠTELI – CASTLES – CASTELLI

The existing palaces of Vojvodina were built only after the territory north from the Sava and the Danube had been liberated from the Turks at the end of XVII century. By the establishment of the Austrian state administration and creation of small aristocracy and civil class, economic conditions were established for the creation of larger and smaller landowners estates, on which estates the palaces were built from XVIII till XX century in various styles from baroque to secession .

Generally and typologically, castle is an independent or in the contextlarger in volume and more representative decorative house-building ofsymmetric or asymmetric, but mostly jagged shaped aimed for periodical stays ( holidays, entertainment ) rare for residence, of higher social classes on their provincial estates .

Usually built in the field, at the same time castles became important for developing settlements near and around them .Castles were Important centers of gathering social-cultural groups in the past : artist, writers, painters and politician

28 castles are registered in Vojvodina

The potentials of the cultural heritage

Where are we heading?

Preservation of identity landmarks of Vojvodina through conservation of cultural heritage (territorial cultural values, movable values and natural values)Valorisation and proper treatment of cultural values (conservation, restauration, reconstruction and revitalisation)Targeting one representative object from characteristic tipology ofendangered cultural heritage which will be good example for other objectsof the same tipology (adequate proposals for projects of conservation, restauration, reconstructionand revitalisation)Conduction of proper functioning and sistematic self-sustainablity of object (detailed analysis and development of project on targeted cultural value)

The Kind of New Environment we are Trying to Create?

Determination of responsibility and conduction of menagment and sustainability of cultural value.Targeted cultural value for pilot project should represent proper treatmentexample for reviving other endangered cultural values of the same tipology.Creation of network of cultural values of the similar tipology (castles-kašteli)on the territory of Vojvodina and its active functioning as selfsustainable project.Encourage interests of domestic and international investing in cultural heritage on the territory of Vojvodina.Mapping on touristic network on domestic and international level.Link between local community and cultural heritage which considers education of people about inherited values, so as their active involvment in the project .

• The immaterial elements of the cultural heritage

The promotion of the ethnographic heritage is usually conducted through organizing festivals as a form of valuation of cultural patrimony/heritage. The festivals are held with an aim to introduce traditional food, music, dances, and handicraft to the broader audience and they often attract more than 25,000 visitors.

The most famous festivals are: Vojvodina Ethno Food and Music Festival held on the city beach, Wine Festival and Farmers Market in Novi Sad and Cabbage Festival in Futog.

The activities of the project should set the base for introduction of culture as a new activity in economically less developed areas and therefore enable development of tourism and new working places in research, production and management.
