Continues through Oct. 24 LYONIA GALLERY: Florida Vernacular Rick Lang is a documentary photographer and educator whose photographic work reflects his interest in the history and culture of the American South. This exhibition presents a grouping of images of vernacular and often simple signs and buildings from many different parts of Florida. These images demonstrate Lang's commitment to documenting the signs and symbols used by everyday citizens to make their voice and opinions public. The Southeast Museum of Photography's new Lyonia Gallery presents exhibitions and programs related to the environment, land-use, local history and regional culture in an exhibition space in Volusia County Government's new LYONIA ENVIRONMENTAL CENTER. The museum gallery occupies display space immediately adjacent to the environmental exhibits area of the Center. Torgovnik provides a glimpse into the lives of these women and their children through portraits and interviews that expose their daily struggles and feelings about raising a child who is a constant reminder of genocide. Schmidt’s work is influenced and informed by commercial photography from the fifties and sixties which depicts life at home of women in different poses of domesticity and gender stereotypes. CULTURAL www.DaytonaState.edu/TheArts Sept. 1, 2 – 5 p.m., and Sept. 2, 7 – 10 p.m. Auditions The Daytona State College School of Music, Entertainment and Art announces upcoming auditions for ANNA IN THE TROPICS and DEARLY DEPARTED. Nilo Cruz’s Pulitzer Prize winning play Anna in the Tropics, takes place in Ybor City, a section of Tampa, Florida. This Tony Award nominated play examines the lives of Cuban immigrants working in a cigar factory in the 1930s. Dearly Departed revolves around the Turpin family living in the Baptist backwoods of the Bible Belt. Despite their earnest efforts to pull themselves together for their father’s funeral, the Turpin’s hilarious problems keep overshadowing the solemn occasion. Sept. 19, 2:30 p.m. Faculty Recital Daytona State College will present an afternoon of great music featuring the combined efforts of its outstanding music faculty. The potpourri concert will feature singers and players performing in a wide variety of musical styles including musical theater, classical, and jazz.
