Greeting One The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and

the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you all.

All And also with you. The Opening Prayer One Almighty God, All to you all hearts are open, all desires

known, and from you no secrets are hidden. Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts

by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

One Let us pray

We pray silently

One Compassionate God, All you touch those rejected by the

world and those despised by false piety: guide us away from a false purity which hides misshapen hearts; and lead us to the joyful feast in which all are renewed; through Jesus Christ, the beauty of God’s faith. Amen.

We Proclaim the Word The First Reading: James 1:17-27 Rdr Hear what the Spirit is saying to the

Church. All Thanks be to God. The Gospel: John 6:51-58

(Please stand)

Rdr: Le Seigneur soit avec vous. The Lord be with you.

All: And also with you.

Rdr: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John.

All: Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ

(The Gospel is proclaimed)

Rdr: The Gospel of Christ All: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. A Reading from the Song of Songs Woman Let him kiss me with the kisses of

his mouth! For your love is better than wine, your anointing oils are fragrant, your name is perfume poured out; therefore the maidens love you. Draw me after you, let us make haste. The king has brought me into his chambers. We will exult and rejoice in you; we will extol your love more than wine; rightly do they love you.

Page 8: September 2, 2018 Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost · September 2, 2018 Fifteenth Sunday ... Woman Awake, O north wind, and come, O south wind! ... Its flashes are flashes of fire,

Man I compare you, my love, to a mare among Pharaoh’s chariots. Your cheeks are comely with ornaments, your neck with strings of jewels. We will make you ornaments of gold, studded with silver. Ah, you are beautiful, my love; ah, you are beautiful; your eyes are doves. Ah, you are beautiful, my beloved, truly lovely.

Woman The voice of my beloved! Look, he comes, leaping upon the mountains, bounding over the hills. My beloved is like a gazelle or a young stag. Look, there he stands behind our wall, gazing in at the windows, looking through the lattice. My beloved speaks and says to me: ‘Arise, my love, my fair one, and come away;

Page 9: September 2, 2018 Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost · September 2, 2018 Fifteenth Sunday ... Woman Awake, O north wind, and come, O south wind! ... Its flashes are flashes of fire,

Man How beautiful you are, my love, how very beautiful! How sweet is your love, my sister, my bride! how much better is your love than wine, and the fragrance of your oils than any spice!

Woman Awake, O north wind, and come, O south wind! Blow upon my garden that its fragrance may be wafted abroad. Let my beloved come to his garden, and eat its choicest fruits.

Man I come to my garden, my sister, my bride; I gather my myrrh with my spice, I eat my honeycomb with my honey, I drink my wine with my milk.

Woman I slept, but my heart was awake. Listen! my beloved is knocking.

Page 10: September 2, 2018 Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost · September 2, 2018 Fifteenth Sunday ... Woman Awake, O north wind, and come, O south wind! ... Its flashes are flashes of fire,

Man ‘Open to me, my sister, my love, my dove, my perfect one; for my head is wet with dew, my locks with the drops of the night.’

Woman I had put off my garment; how could I put it on again? I had bathed my feet; how could I soil them? My beloved thrust his hand into the opening, and my inmost being yearned for him. I arose to open to my beloved, and my hands dripped with myrrh, my fingers with liquid myrrh, upon the handles of the bolt. I am my beloved’s and my beloved is mine; he pastures his flock among the lilies.

Man You are beautiful as Tirzah, my love, comely as Jerusalem, terrible as an army with banners. Turn away your eyes from me, for they overwhelm me!

Page 11: September 2, 2018 Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost · September 2, 2018 Fifteenth Sunday ... Woman Awake, O north wind, and come, O south wind! ... Its flashes are flashes of fire,

Woman I am my beloved’s, and his desire is for me. Come, my beloved, let us go forth into the fields, and lodge in the villages; Set me as a seal upon your heart, as a seal upon your arm; for love is strong as death, passion fierce as the grave. Its flashes are flashes of fire, a raging flame. Many waters cannot quench love, neither can floods drown it.

Homily Rev. Mark Whittall Open Space The Apostles’ Creed One Let us confess the faith of our baptism,

as we say, All I trust in God, the Father almighty,

creator of heaven and earth.

Page 12: September 2, 2018 Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost · September 2, 2018 Fifteenth Sunday ... Woman Awake, O north wind, and come, O south wind! ... Its flashes are flashes of fire,

I trust in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary.

He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I trust in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

One At your command all things came to be:

the vast expanse of interstellar space, galaxies, suns, the planets in their

courses, and this fragile earth, our island home; by your will they were created and

have their being. All Glory to you for ever and ever.

One From the primal elements you brought forth the human race, and blessed us with memory, reason,

and skill; you made us the stewards of creation. All Glory to you for ever and ever.

One But we turn against you, and betray your trust;

and we turn against one another. Again and again you call us to return. Through the prophets and sages

Page 18: September 2, 2018 Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost · September 2, 2018 Fifteenth Sunday ... Woman Awake, O north wind, and come, O south wind! ... Its flashes are flashes of fire,

you reveal your righteous law. In the fullness of time you sent your

Son, born of a woman, to be our Saviour. He was wounded for our

transgressions, and bruised for our iniquities. By his death he opened to us the way of freedom and peace. All Glory to you for ever and ever.

One Therefore we praise you, joining with the heavenly chorus, with prophets, apostles, and martyrs, and with those in every generation who have looked to you in hope, to proclaim with them your glory, in their unending hymn: Sanctus (Holy Lord) - Zack Ingles, Meganne Woronchak

I came to Jesus as I was, weary and worn and sad I found in Him a resting place, And He has made me glad My soul cries out with a joyful shout That the God of my heart is great And my spirit sings of the wondrous things That You bring to the one who waits You fixed Your sight on the servant's plight and my weakness You did not spurn So from east to west shall my name be blest Could the world be about to turn? Chorus My heart shall sing of the day You bring Let the fires of Your justice burn Wipe away all tears, for the dawn draws near And the world is about to turn

I heard the voice of Jesus say “Behold, I freely give, the living water; thirsty once, stoop down, and drink and live!” I came to Jesus, and I drank Of that life-giving stream My thirst was quenched, my soul revived And now I live in Him I heard the voice of Jesus say “I am this dark world's light” Look unto me, thy morn shall rise And all thy day be bright I looked to Jesus and I found In Him my star, my sun And in that light of life I'll walk Till Travelling days are done (Chorus)
