PASTOR’S DESK On this twenty fifth Sunday of ordinary time, we exalt Jesus Christ the son of God. He is the wisdom that came down from heaven to serve humanity. The church invites us to listen to him, and to follow his example by living an orderly and peaceful life. Today’s first reading is fulfilled in the life of Christ. First, it points to Christ the Son of God, who was put to death by jealous and wicked people. As a righteous man, Jesus reproached and condemned the ambitious Pharisees and scribes of his time. They took offense, and so, persecuted and crucified Christ. This reading is also fulfilled in the life of all those who suffer unjust persecutions today for being true and just. Like Christ, sometimes, we are persecuted by our enemies, and by even by our friends for doing the right thing. However, we must remain steadfast because, God will surely vindicate us as he vindicated Christ. Our second reading remind us of the importance of focusing sincerely on the things that unite us rather than on the ones that divide us. We all desire a harmonious life, yet many Christian communities, families and homes live in frequent conflicts and disorder. As much as conflicts are inevitable in life, we must not allow them to tear us apart. Sadly, the root of most of such conflicts is selfish ambitions. So, James admonishes us not to allow selfish ambitions destroy our relationships, families and communities. James asks us: “Where do all these battles between you first start. Is it not precisely in the desires fighting inside your own selves? You have an ambition that you cannot satisfy; so, you fight to get your way by force…” Of course, many families, marriages, communities and nations have already been destroyed because of selfish ambitions or desires. In today’s gospel, Jesus foretells his imminent suffering, death and resurrection. Unfortunately, instead of reflecting on what Christ was saying, his disciples were busy quarreling secretly over who was the greatest. Of course, their argument was aimed at the earthly government they imagined that Christ had come to establish. So, like the community that James wrote to, Jesus’ disciples were experiencing a conflict of interest. This is what we often see in any society, church, family, and indeed anywhere that personal ambition is considered more important than anything else. There, we see in-fighting, gossips, indifference, aggression, threats to lives and properties, hatred, and all sorts of vices. All these, come at the expense of the common good and peaceful coexistence. Wherever these exist, there can be no progress, prosperity and peace. Therefore, by using a child as an example for us today, Jesus is simply teaching us that we have to become like children in order to be great. Of course, this does not mean being childish. Rather, it means being child-like. It means that, we have to live our lives in humble service to God and to one another. Finally, to be great is to be focused on something other than oneself. It means our ability to accommodate, welcome, and work in harmony with others just as children always do. It also means the readiness to accept the truth and, to reflect positively on it. ESCRITORIO DEL PASTOR En este vigésimo quinto domingo del tiempo ordinario, exaltamos a Jesucristo el hijo de Dios. Él es la sabiduría que bajó del cielo para servir a la humanidad. La iglesia nos invita a escucharlo ya seguir su ejemplo viviendo una vida ordenada y pacífica. La primera lectura de hoy se cumple en la vida de Cristo. Primero, apunta a Cristo el Hijo de Dios, quien fue condenado a muerte por gente celosa y malvada. Como hombre justo, Jesús reprochó y condenó a los ambiciosos fariseos y escribas de su tiempo. Se ofendieron y, por tanto, persiguieron y crucificaron a Cristo. Esta lectura también se cumple en la vida de todos aquellos que hoy sufren injustas persecuciones por ser verdaderos y justos. Como Cristo, a veces somos perseguidos por nuestros enemigos, e incluso por nuestros amigos por hacer lo correcto. Sin embargo, debemos permanecer firmes porque Dios seguramente nos vindicará como vindicó a Cristo. Nuestra segunda lectura nos recuerda la importancia de enfocarnos sinceramente en las cosas que nos unen más que en las que nos dividen. Todos deseamos una vida armoniosa, sin embargo, muchas comunidades cristianas, familias y hogares viven en frecuentes conflictos y desorden. Por mucho que los conflictos sean inevitables en la vida, no debemos permitir que nos destrocen. Lamentablemente, la raíz de la mayoría de estos conflictos son las ambiciones egoístas. Entonces, Santiago nos advierte que no permitamos que las ambiciones egoístas destruyan nuestras relaciones, familias y comunidades. En el evangelio de hoy, Jesús predice su inminente sufrimiento, muerte y resurrección. Desafortunadamente, en lugar de reflexionar sobre lo que Cristo estaba diciendo, sus discípulos estaban ocupados discutiendo en secreto sobre quién era el más grande. Por supuesto, su argumento estaba dirigido al gobierno terrenal que imaginaban que Cristo había venido a establecer. STREET CLEAN-UP The city of Adelanto requires all organizations who wish to have a Fireworks Stand for the 4th of July to participate in a street clean-up program monthly. Additionally, we are required to participate in the citywide clean up program twice a year. Our next scheduled street clean up is Saturday, September 25th from 8am-10am. with coffee, drinks and donuts afterward. Please bring weed whackers, hoes and rakes. It is important that as many as possible participate in this effort. For more information please contact the office. Thank you.

MASS INTENTIONS A beautiful way to honor or remember your loved one is to include his or her name in the Mass Intentions. Fortunately, Mass Intentions are not for Sundays exclusively. At every Mass we share the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ and we listen to the Word of God. If someone’s birthday falls on a weekday or Saturday, do not fret, schedule an Intention and your loved one will be remembered even if you can not attend Mass. The donation is $10 per Mass per name.
