Considering a call to the priesthood? The Office of Vocations is hosting discernment gatherings for young men who would like to discern the call to priesthood. If you would like to attend, please email [email protected] or call (804) 359-5661 and request to speak with the Vocations Office.

Information Discernment gatherings are the first Saturday of every month. The event usually begins at 10:00am with Mass followed by a social event and lunch.

Mount Tabor Days—Men’s Vocation Retreats, are 9:00am—3:00pm on October 17 at St. Patrick Church in Richmond and November 14, TBD. These events will also be offered in the spring. Each retreat will be accessible to men on location and through a streaming platform. The Vocation retreat is hosted by seminarians and priests from the Diocese of Rich-mond.

This weekend, September 26 and 27, we have a second collection for the Retirement Fund for Religious. “Every dollar makes a difference in covering our expenses,” says a Trappist abbot. Hundreds of US religious communities struggle to provide for aging members because most senior Catholic sisters, brothers, and religious order priests served for little pay. Your gift to the

Retirement Fund for Religious helps these communities bridge the gap, offering support for medications, nursing care, and other necessities. Thank you for your generosity!

Parish News YOSAR Registration—Calling all teenagers! Did you know we have an active High School Youth Group at St. Andrew’s? After meeting virtually and then in limited capacities over the summer, we will begin to meet in person on Sunday, September 27! This year we meet on Sundays from 4:30—6:30pm. All

teens are welcome! 9th, 11th, and 12th grade students need to register for YOSAR (aka any high schooler that isn’t preparing for Confirmation this year). YOSAR is our youth group at St. Andrew’s. Check out https://standrewsva.org/high-school-youth-ministry for more information!

Who should register for Confirmation Preparation? All incoming 10th graders who have received the Sacraments of Baptism and Eucharist and are parishioners at St. Andrew's need to register for Confirmation. This includes students of Roanoke Catholic that are registered parishioners of St. Andrew's. Please note, you must be 15 or older and in 10th grade or higher to register. Go to https://standrewsva.org/2020-2021-confirmation-registration to register! For more information, please email Megan at [email protected].

Our Justice and Peace Ministries at St. Andrew’s have continued through the pandemic. Even with limitations and strict regulations, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul has maintained its commitment to reach out to our community by phone and provided donations and assistance to those in need.

The Society has resumed meeting in person. Business meetings are on the fourth Monday of the month at 5:30pm in the Social Hall. Evening Prayer gatherings meet on the second and fourth Monday of each month at 5:30pm in the Chapel (enter through the Social Hall). See our website for details!

Join us for the Blessing of the Animals on Friday, October 2 at 4:30pm to celebrate the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi. You are invited to bring your pet, anything that romps, scampers, flies, swims, creeps or slithers, to the lawn between Roanoke Catholic School and St. Andrew’s Church. St. Vincent de Paul ~ Memorial of St. Vincent de Paul, priest

Patron Saint of the Diocese of Richmond, Virginia

St. Vincent de Paul was a great apostle of charity, and brought a great revival of the priesthood in the 17th century. He was born near Dax in 1581 in the Landes (in the old Province of Gascony), France in 1581. As a young priest he was captured by Moorish pirates who carried him to Africa. He was sold into slavery, but freed in 1607 when he converted his owner.

Having returned to France, he became successively a parish priest and chaplain to the galley-slaves. He founded a religious Congregation under the title of Priests of the Mission or Lazarists (now known as Vincentians), and he bound them by a special way to undertake the apostolic work of charity; he sent them to preach missions, especially to the ignorant peasants of that time, and to establish seminaries.

In order to help poor girls, invalids, and the insane, sick and unemployed, he and St. Louise de Marillac founded the Congregation of the Daughters of Charity, now better known as the Sisters of St. Vincent.

St. Vincent worked tirelessly to help those in need: the impoverished, the sick, the enslaved, the abandoned, the ignored. He died in 1660 at St. Lazarus's house, Paris. His motto: "God sees you."

"Let us love God; but at the price of our hands and sweat of our face."

Patron: charitable societies; horses; hospitals; leprosy; lost articles; prisoners; volunteers; spiritual help; Saint Vincent de Paul Societies; Vincentian Service Corps; Madagascar; diocese of Richmond, Virginia.

Symbols: 16th century cleric performing act of charity; priest surrounded by the Sisters of Charity; book with heart; model of an orphanage or hospital; model of a hospice; priest with child in his arms.
