Our final brochure of this year is a bumper issue! We’ve had a fantastic summer and were overwhelmed by the positive comments from visitors and friends about Adam Patterson’s ‘A Very Normal Place’ exhibition. Thanks to all who visited and passed on comments.

This season sees two fantastic exhibitions with the best of contemporary Irish artists. Plastic Art presents newly commissioned works supported by ESOF and Dublin City of Science. Curated by Hilary Murray it explores the notion of biological plasticity in the creation of art. A unique ‘Arbor’ will also take place during the exhibition (see page 1)

We’ll be rounding off the exhibitions this year with our Annual Winter Open Show. The selection panel had a difficult (but very enjoyable) selection and we are delighted to be exhibiting the work of over 30 artists across Gallery 1 and 2. This preview is not to be missed! (see page 5)We’ve added some extra films for Halloween and Christmas that we’re particularly excited about (page 10)

Read about the Absolut Fringe Festival companies (page 21) that have been rehearsing in RUA RED. Be sure to check out their shows in the festival during September. Culture Night 2012 is coming to RUA RED! For the first time since we opened the artist studios and galleries will open their doors to visitors. see page 20 for more info.

Now the Cafe is up and running we will introduce regular cafe events to bring the art centre experience into the cafe environment. see page 36 and visit the Cafe website page for listings on events.

Thank you for your continued support and as ever we welcome your feedback and comments in person, over the phone and online. See you soon! Join theconversation!!

PLASTICARTCurated by Hilary Murray (2012 Curatorial Residency) Plastic Art sees the commissioning of new work, by artists Barbara Knezevic, Magnhild Opdøl and Seamus McCormack. The exhibition explores the notion of biological plasticity through the manipulation, reworking and adaptation of materials.

The artist makes use of well-known memory images and changes the form of each to allow for other manipulations and remembrances to occur, as such, this interplay itself mimicsbiological plasticity. The creation of new form through the re-working and optimisation of old form creates a platform for the viewing of art on an intimate cellular level.

Barbara Knezevic is an Australian born artist practicing in Dublin. She is the recipient of a Project studio at Temple Bar Gallery and Studios, and the South Dublin County Council’s Artist’s Bursary Award. Barbara is the co-editor of the online publication Paper Visual Art Journal.

Magnhild Opdøl was born in Norway and is now living and working in Ireland. In 2011 she was awarded the Tony O’Malley Residency. She has widely exhibited both in Ireland and internationally, and her work is included in many public and private collections.

Seamus McCormack attended Limerick School of Art & Design and received a First Class BA Fine Art from DIT. He has recently completed a Masters in Fine Art at NCAD. Recent shows include Treading the Boards, Ballina Arts Centre, Mayo and I’m Crying & Everything, Signal Arts Centre, Bray.

OVER/55S MR HYDE (1941)DR JEKYL AND

We’re excited to be screening this classic horror film especially just in time for Halloween!

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is a 1941 horror film starring Spencer Tracy, Ingrid Bergman and Lana Turner. Rather than being a new film version of the novel, it’s a direct remake of the 1931 film of the same name.

The movie was based on Robert Louis Stevenson’s 1886 novella The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and directed by Victor Fleming, director of Gone with the Wind and The Wizard of Oz two years earlier.

Dr. Jekyll believes good and evil exist in everyone. Experiments reveal his evil side, named Hyde.

Experience teaches him how evil Hyde can be: he kills Ivy who earlier expressed interest in Jekyll and Sir Charles, Jekyll’s faincee’s father.

Aibileen (Davis), Skeeter’s best friend’s housekeeper, is the first to open up - to the dismay of her friends in the tight-knit black community.

Along the way, unlikely friendships are forged and a new sisterhood emerges, but not before everyone in town has a thing or two to say themselves when they become unwittingly - and unwillingly - caught up in the changing times.

RESIDENCIESRUA RED offers a range of residency opportunities for artists. You can read about our residents and what they’re up to over the next few pages!

RESEARCHER IN RESIDENCEFIONA MARRON

Primarily engaged in moving image work, Fiona Marron’s practice relates to several interconnected social systems. Her video work combines staged and documentary type approaches, with installation often incorporating sculptural elements.

Fiona is currently working on a body of work examining how the changing relationship between people and land has evolved and shaped our social surroundings. During her time at RUA RED she will be working on a series of videos that function as observations of this altering relationship.

Another area of Fiona’s research looks specifically at the redundancy of buildings and their transformational state during moments of economic change - focusing on the original function and purpose of their design. As her interests also lie in the intricate nature of human behaviour, the research involves investigating the consequent emotional impact of such change.

TENANT SPOTLIGHTInterviewed by Heather Byrne

CONTACT STUDIOGERRY HORAN

HB: Who are you / what is CONTACT Studio all about?GH: I’m Gerry Horan and I run CONTACT studio in RUA RED. CONTACT Studio is a professionally run and equipped recording studio based in South Dublin County. The studio is a South Dublin County Council’s Arts Office initiative and is subsidised to encourage artists, youth groups and community groups in the county to record and archive their work. I like to think the studio is an early stepping stone for young and developing artists that will then go on to record in bigger studios / labels.

HB: What’s a normal day in your studio like? GH: There isn’t one. That’s the best thing about my job. Depending on who is in that day the set-ups are different. If it’s a band I’ll come in early and set everything up for them. I try to encourage bands to work slowly and warm up first but they’re usually quite eager to record as much as they can in the time they have. The recording takes place in the morning time and then I’ll do the mixing in the afternoon. There’s never enough time to cover everything though! If there’s an individual in they usually come in for a few hours but if it’s a band it has to be a full day session.

HB: You’re part of Suburban Sounds?GH: Yeah I am. Suburban Sounds is a music course for young people that takes place in RUA RED. Four years ago Fiona Delaney was interested in setting up a course for young musicians to write about suburban life. Myself and Martin Moran from AltEnts (read his interview on page 33) got involved. Fiona moved on and Martin and myself took over. This is the 3rd year of the course. Deadline for applications is Friday 19th October. You can download an application form at www.suburbansounds.net

HB: What are you working on right now?GH: My work here is generally on-going. There’s so many different projects happening at the moment; I have individuals recording two or three songs, choir groups recording albums, and someone is recording an audio book of their memoirs.

HB: Any upcoming projects / gigs you’d like to plug?GH: There’s a Digital Media Group (name still to be decided) that will be starting at the end of August. I’m really excited for this. There’s going to be seven young people working with scripts, making audio documentaries with animators, like Dig-ital Journalism.

HB: An audio book of memoirs? That sounds pretty cool, I thought you just recorded singers and bands.GH: Yeah it’s really interesting listening to some-one read their life. There are stories going back to the 1800’s! I also have someone recording a downloadable operatic book that students can use to train their voices.

HB: Who are you / what are you all about?JC: I’m Jim Cathcart, a visual artist (based in Studio 5 at RUA RED) and sometimes tutor, arts co-ordinator, researcher and consultant. These roles have all been part of trying to work out what artists and arts should be all about these days. This is still an ongoing conundrum.

It has challenges, particularly in learning to work collaboratively but also rewards. It’s been great to see what different people will do when they decide to get their hands on art. If supported and sustained, it’s often more interesting and significant that what the artistic cognoscenti comes up with.

HB: What is a normal day in your studio like? JC: The only constant is the radio. Otherwise it might be a day of inking and cleaning slabs, a day of making doodles and sketches or going up and down the scaffold with brushes and paint.

HB: Where/who do you take influence from?JC: There are numerous artists whose work fascinates me but I’d be reticent to ascribe influence though as that might in-vite comparison, not great for the ego. In terms of ideas and motivation, at the moment I find myself being influenced by the way some musicians and song-writers deal with the world around them.

HB: If you could do it all again what would you do differently?JC: Most things I’ve been involved in were attempts to do things differently to what had gone before, so bearing that in mind I’d probably do it all over again. I would probably pay more attention to recording what we were doing and why. That might have helped me answer your first question on what I’m all about.

HB: Any upcoming projects / exhibitions you’d like to plug?JC: There will be an exhibition in Draiocht Arts Centre in spring 2014 based around the mobile mural project. So at this point it’s more of an early warning than a plug but I’ll get back to you nearer the time. (Jim’s Studio will be open as part of Culture night on Sep 21st from 5pm – 8pm) see page x

TENANT SPOTLIGHTInterviewed by Heather Byrne

MARTIN MORANALTERNATIVE ENTERTAINMENTS

HB: Who are you / what is Alternative Entertainments?

MM: I’m Martin Moran and I’m the manager of Alternative Entertainments (AltEnts). AltEnts is a multi-disciplinary arts group operating since

1982 in the Tallaght/South West Dublin area. We run festivals (AltEnts Children’s Arts Festival; Des Carty Sessions; Mickey McKenna Festival; Tallaght

Traditional Music Seminar; Trad Og), concerts, workshops, educational projects (Des Carty Music

School; Tallaght Rock School; AltEnts Children’s Arts Festival and Suburban Sounds).

HB: How did you get involved with AltEnts? MM: My Father Tom Moran was one of the founders of the group so I’ve been attending its events since it began. I started teaching guitar for AltEnts in the late 90’s and bit by bit I got involved with the admin and event management side of things after that.

HB: You’ve been involved with a lot of workshops for children, do you find this rewarding? (AltEnts run an annual children’s festival)MM: In my opinion it’s the best thing we do. The buzz around the performances at the end of the Children’s Arts Fest, or the end-of-year Des Carty Music School student concert, or the Suburban Sounds gigs is great. It’s very inspiring to watch kids you’ve mentored, or who have participated in an event that you’ve managed create their own work, and not only create it but present it confidently to the public. The opportunity to be a part of young people’s artistic and creative awakening is pretty cool.

Page 37: Sep - Dec Brochure

HB: So what did you do before you became involved with Al-tEnts and DCMS?MM: I was a postman...HB: *Awaits exciting stories* None comes. *Awkward silence*

HB: Soooo... For those trying to get into arts / music management what would be your advice?MM: Try organizing some small gigs yourself. Get involved with local arts groups and organizations. Volunteer and do as many work placements as possible. Ask for advice from those already involved and try immersing yourself in gigs and exhibitions.

HB: What are you working on right now?MM: Suburban Sounds, Unwrapped, Noise Sounds, new term of Des Carty Music School, an application for a multi-disciplinary summer arts camp next year, Arts Council annual programme application and Musician-in-residence project through the Arts Council’s Deis initiative.

HB: Any upcoming projects / gigs you’d like to plug?

MM: The new Des Carty Music School term is starting in September. Enrolments will be taking place in RUA RED Aug 31st and Sep 7th, 6pm – 8m and 1st and 8th Sep, 1pm – 3pm. Suburban

Sounds will be starting up again in October. The deadline for applications is 18th October. You
