Thanks to you, it’s a MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!

Sweltering heat didn’t prevent the crowds from celebrating the

Nightingale christening on July 22, 2011. Rescue personnel, grateful patients, and families begin arriving at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital at 8:45 am to witness the dramatic arrival of the new Nightingale air ambulance. The roaring blades of the new Eurocopter EC-145 created a cooling fury of wind as the three-person flight crew maneuvered the glistening red Nightingale gently into place on the helipad.

For former patients like Jaleesa Lewter, celebrating the arrival of the new helicopter also meant celebrating the gift of life. “I want to be here because Nightingale saves lives – like mine.”

The Nightingale and its crew transported Jaleesa to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in 2006 after she suffered a traumatic spinal cord injury after a car accident in Suffolk, Virginia. Jaleesa’s mother, Donna, also credits the air

ambulance with saving her daughter’s life. “We are ever so grateful to Nightingale. They say minutes can save lives and that certainly was the case for Jaleesa.”

The christening event also marked the announcement of an important fundraising milestone. Thanks to donors like you, the campaign surpassed the goal and engaged the community in raising more than $3.5 million to help fund the new helicopter purchase.

The success of the Nightingale program is due, in part, to the teams of first responders and EMS personnel who work to stabilize patients on the scene in preparation for transport. Fire and rescue representatives from the Southside and Peninsula regions, the Eastern Shore, and Northeastern North Carolina attended the

christening and were recognized for their enormous contributions to the Nightingale program. Representatives of the Nightingale crew were also recognized for their service.

On June 1, 2011, members of the Legacy Society gathered at Sentara Heart Hospital for an insider’s tour showcasing the latest technology

and techniques these physicians use when saving lives. After spending a short time socializing and enjoying hors d’oeuvres, the group settled in to learn more from the experts about recent advancements in stroke care.

Then, it was time to go behind the scenes to the interventional suite.

After a tour of the facility and an opportunity to ask questions of the experts, Legacy Society members were able to actually hold the latest devices used to retrieve clots from within the brain.

The stroke program at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital focuses not only on caring for patients who have suffered from neurological episodes, but also on preventing the onset of stroke through early intervention.

“There are only a few interventional neuro-radiology programs in Virginia,” says Dr. John Agola. “We are quite fortunate to house one of a handful of stroke programs with this resource in the country. Some of our patients are able to walk out of the hospital within days of treatment of an ischemic stroke episode.”

Because of the work of caregivers like Dr. Agola, Dr. Lanier, and Dr. Zweifler, stroke patients in Hampton Roads continue to have an edge in beating the odds.

“I was fascinated by the intricacy of the clot retrievers. Seeing and holding them was truly impressive. It shows how far technology has advanced the treatment of stroke.”

A Donor’s Perspective: H. Furlong BaldwinNightingale: An Investment in our Region’s Emergency Response

There is nothing, absolutely nothing, good about wars. But, one of the rare exceptions is due to the volume of trauma situations. During each war we have accelerated our understanding and handling of those situations. For example, during WWII, Dr. Benjamin Baker, a native of Norfolk, landed with the first wave on Iwo Jima to supervise the Navy Corpsmen who, for the first time, were using whole blood instead of plasma for treating the injured. This was an obvious success and was a great step forward in handling battlefield injuries. In Korea, when it was understood that the ‘golden hour’ was vital-to life, we developed the now famous MASH unit. These units were literally working behind the front lines and helped saved countless lives. In Vietnam, the helicopter was in full use, both for moving and rescuing troops, and became vitally important for getting the injured to surgical centers in short order. As a result, the helicopter has since become an integral part of emergency medicine in the United States, as well as in the civilized world.

On the personal side, a member of my immediate family was involved in a terrible automobile accident in upstate NY about 18 months ago. Nightingale’s equivalent literally saved her life. The rescue squad called for the helicopter as soon as they arrived on the scene. It took 1 ½ hours to cut her out of the car, after which she was immediately transported to the closest trauma center. Therefore, I believe underwriting of things like the Nightingale is not an option… it is a necessity.

- H. Furlong Baldwin

Furlong Baldwin knows a thing or two about building and investing in things that have a strong foundation.

As a long-time banker and trustee of Johns Hopkins University and chairman of Johns Hopkins Medicine, Baldwin understands how philanthropic investments can build world-class medical care infrastructure and contribute to lasting growth.

His generous donation to the Nightingale: Saving Minutes, Saving Lives Campaign supports the purchase of a new air ambulance that replaces the 25-year-old Nightingale, which must be retired. Since the program’s inception in 1982, the air ambulance has completed over 16,000 flights without a single flight-related incident. In the last five years alone, the aircraft

completed over 275 patient missions from the Eastern Shore to its hub at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, the region’s only Level I Trauma center. The new medevac platform, with its improved safety technology, flight capabilities, night vision, and upgraded communications, will enhance emergency response in the region, yet will allow for future improvements and growth.

Because he also served in the Marine Corps, Baldwin has a unique understanding with regard to medical advances throughout history and how the need to save lives on the battlefield has benefitted healthcare delivery for all Americans.

We invite you to consider making a gift in continuing support of the Nightingale Air Ambulance Program. To do so, please contact the Sentara Health Foundation at (757) 455-7976.

David Banty: Story of a Nightingale Frequent Flyer

The Saving Minutes, Saving Lives campaign kicked off two years ago to raise money to replace the 25-year-old helicopter that has served the Nightingale program since 1996. Public support as well as support from area governments, corporations and foundations helped Sentara purchase a state-of-the-art Eurocopter EC-145, which carries a price tag of $7.2 million. The program operates at a deficit of as much as $650,000 per year because Sentara takes care of every Nightingale patient regardless of their ability to pay. Every dollar donated to Nightingale helps continue the legacy of this lifesaving program.

A rogue wave caught David Banty by surprise when he was vacationing on the Outer Banks in 1982. Before

he could blink, he was being airlifted to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital by Sentara’s Nightingale Regional Air Ambulance. Nightingale has operated for almost 30 years as part of Sentara’s not-for-profit community mission.

Banty experienced total paralysis following the accident and spent several months in rehabilitation hospitals. He recovered well and is able to walk with the help of a cane.

A few months ago, Banty was lucky enough (or unlucky, depending on how you look at it) to catch another ride on Nightingale. After experiencing what he thought was indigestion, Banty and his family were shocked to discover that he had multiple artery blockages in his heart. He was transported immediately from Franklin to Sentara Heart

Hospital, where he says cardiologists were waiting for him at the door. Two heart stents were placed immediately and another three were placed several days later.

“My life was saved twice by Nightingale,” says Banty. He adds with a laugh, “They say things happen in threes, and we know they’ll be there if we need them a third time.”

Betty Banty says when she heard Nightingale was on the way to pick up her husband that she knew he’d be okay. The drive from their home in Capron, Virginia, to Sentara Heart Hospital is over an hour and they knew, with a heart blockage, time was of the essence with a heart blockage.

“They are wonderful, the most precious people in the world and a true community asset,” Betty Banty says of the Nightingale crew. “They even came to see me a day or two afterwards to check up on me,” David Banty adds.

Dr. Leonard J. Weireter, Jr., professor of surgery at Eastern Virginia Medical School and Medical Director of the Shock/Trauma Center at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital spoke briefly, highlighting the significant community partnership between Sentara and EVMS.

The christening event also featured the reading of a proclamation from Governor Bob McDonnell by Sentara Norfolk General Hospital president Mary Blunt. Norfolk Councilwoman and physician, Dr. Theresa Whibley, also shared words of congratulations on behalf of Norfolk Mayor Paul Fraim.

At the ceremony’s conclusion, Mary Blunt smashed a bottle of sparkling cider over one of the helicopter skids. “I’m chipping off some of the paint!” she joked. As the glass shattered and released the sweet spray airborn, the crowd erupted into cheers.

The new Nightingale is officially in service! Our sincere thanks again to you for making this a mission accomplished!

Mary Blunt christening the Nightingale.

Few moments in life are as precious as the birth of a child.

On June 21, 2010, Kevin and Mandi Osfolk celebrated a precious day of their own as they welcomed the arrival of their new baby boy, albeit much sooner than they anticipated. Owen Anton Osfolk was born at 28 weeks gestation, weighing only 3 pounds and 9 ounces. A willlful fighter from the start, he was on the respirator for a short period of time before gaining the strength to breathe on his own. Under the vigilant care of the Special Care Nursery (SCN) staff at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital (SNGH), Owen made great strides quickly - gaining weight and growing stronger with each passing day.

“Owen’s parents were so proud of his development milestones each week of his life,” recalls Ann Barnes, clinical manager of the nursery. One nurse in particular, Pattie Etter, developed a strong bond with the Osfolks and helped support and reassure the family as they kept vigil at Owen’s crib side. After 8 weeks in the nursery, Owen was discharged and the Osfolks were finally able to return home as a family of three.

During his first month at home, Owen thrived. “He was so sweet natured, hardly ever fussed, and was doing great. He even got up to 8 pounds,” remembers his father, Kevin. But on September 11, 2010 everything changed. When Owen woke up from his afternoon nap, he wasn’t himself. He was crying and inconsolable - so different from the tranquil child he was known to be. His parents rushed him to the

emergency room where he was immediately admitted. Shortly there after, the Osfolks learned that he no longer had signs of brain activity and Owen passed away peacefully. It was another five months before Mandi and Kevin learned that both meningitis and encephalitis were responsible for Owen’s heartbreaking death.

Despite the tragic outcome for the Osfolk family, Kevin and Mandi were determined to generate some good. Because Owen spent the first two months of his life in the SCN at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, the Osfolks wanted to do

something to thank the staff for their support and care. They decided to direct gifts made in Owen’s memory to the Special Care Nursery. Kevin says, “We wanted to be sure the money wasn’t lost in the shuffle, so we worked with Pattie Etter to develop a plan for using the funds.”

According to Ann Barnes, “Purchase of portable DVD players was suggested by staff as a need for teaching new parents how to care for their new baby. Parents are able to watch the teaching videos on car safety, CPR, general newborn care, jaundice, kangaroo care, bonding, breast

feeding and bottle feeding while sitting at the baby’s bedside.”

Kevin explains, “We felt like they took really good care of him, so we wanted to help out.” And help out they did…. Thanks to the generosity of the Osfolk family, Owen is memorialized each day as new parents use the two DVD players and library of videos to arm themselves with information about caring for their new precious babies.

The Osfolk Family - Giving Back in Memory of Owen

“To Owen, I never understood what it meant or what it feels like to love someone until I met you. I thought I knew these things but your arrival in this world changed everything. I also never understood what it meant to be truly heartbroken. But, I learned that very hard lesson through your departure from this world... I miss you every day and will love you until the day I die.”
