What do the candles on a birthday cake signify?
Have you ever wondered what candles on the birthday cakes mean? We always merrily blow out the candles on our cakes and are asked to make a wish. But where did this superstition originate from? What do the candles mean?
The history of birthdays
It is said that it was the Ancient Greeks that started the system of having birthday cakes. Since the cakes symbolized a full moon, they would have round shaped cakes that would go with this idea. They offered the round shaped cakes to their Moon Goddess Artemis. It was believed to evoke the Goddess’ powers.
What do birthday candles mean?
The birthday candles came around the same time as birthday cakes but their meanings differed from place to place. For example, for the Greeks, the birthday candles signified the “glow of moon”. Since in those times the cakes used to be really dull and there was not much decoration that used to be done. To add some extra glow to it they used the candles.
These candles were considered to be the moon’s glow and they were added to please the Moon Goddess Artemis.
The Germans on the other hand believed that the candles represented the “light of life”. So they also believed that when you blow out a candle, the smoke takes your wishes up to heaven. This is how the “make a wish, blow a candle” system started.
In almost all cultures it was believed that the smoke from the candles would take the wish up to the sky to the Gods. This is why it is said that if you make a wish with a blow of the candle, it would take it to the skies.
Fast forward to today
Today almost all cultures around the world celebrate birthdays the same way – with a blow of a candle and a wish to the Gods. It is hard to think that this only originated in the western part of the world.
Today we believe that a silent wish must be done while blowing the candles. The wish must be kept a secret or it will not come true. This belief was also taken from the ancient times when people celebrated the birthdays with a party.
