10 RE The Carmel Pine Cone December 13, 2013

HERE WE are with Christmas upon usalmost before the wishbone on theThanksgiving turkey is dry enough to snap.In my family, we were picking names for ourChristmas gift exchange while we were stillpicking at the turkey carcass.

The holidays present a dizzying array ofdemands — parties, shopping, entertainingand the logistics of travel, to name just a few.In November, the days dwindle down to aprecious few to prepare for holidays onlyweeks apart. The season can be a stressfultime, as we try to meet all of our obligations.

There is a simple solution. Christmas isset in stone, or at least set in December. ButThanksgiving is a moveable feast. The datehas already been changed, when PresidentRoosevelt moved it up a week to accommo-date retailers who wanted shoppers to havemore time to spend between the two holi-days. So why not move Thanksgiving again?

great traditional Thanksgiving dinner? Another reason in favor of August is that

traveling wouldn’t be imperiled by inclementweather. We wouldn’t have to worry aboutice and snow on the roads, or be subject todelays from airports being closed. This yeara major storm swept across the country justbefore Thanksgiving. Although it didn’t turnout to be as serious as the TV weather terror-ists predicted, it surely caused an onset ofanxiety among many travelers. But inAugust, Macy’s wouldn’t need to worryabout giant balloons being blown away byhigh winds during its annual parade.

Women should be all for August becausethere would be no football. They could plandinner when it was convenient for them, notbetween games or at halftime.

And if the weather were good, as it usual-ly is in August, you could get out and throwthe football around to work off some of thosecalories.

I’m sorry that pumpkins wouldn’t be inseason, but think of Thanksgiving with freshtomatoes and sweet corn on the cob. Therewouldn’t be cranberries, but you would havetons of fresh blueberries. There would beplums and pears, and apples, apples, apples!

Besides, it seems that all Thanksgiving in

Two holidays desperately seeking four months of separationMy proposal is to move it to August. Why

August? There are no holidays in August.Think about it. January kicks off with NewYear’s Day, and then we celebrate MartinLuther King’s birthday. February is for heartsand flowers, and honoring a couple of major

presidents whose faces gracea couple of minor coins.March has St. Paddy’s Day,and a long anticipatedequinox. April has the dreadedIdes when no one is in a holi-day mood. May is for Moms.June is for dads, grads, and

trips to the altar. In July we celebrate ourcountry’s birthday (and mine, too. It’s a holi-day for me!) Labor Day in September;Veteran’s Day (and Thanksgiving) inNovember, and finally Christmas inDecember. Poor little August has nothing tocelebrate.

I would shoot for early in August to spaceTurkey Day about equidistant between theFourth of July and Labor Day. We could haveit on a Saturday so most people would be offwork the next day. Many people take theirvacations during August. They are often onthe road anyway. Why not plan that vacationtrip around a visit to Grandma’s house for a

Scenic ViewsBy JERRY GERVASE

November does is produce a cornucopia ofadvertising for Christmas shopping.

The best reason for moving Thanksgivingto August is that Christmas shopping wouldbe removed from the equation. The big boxstores wouldn’t be open on ThanksgivingDay, and we wouldn’t have to struggle withBlack Fridays. Think of all the big retailers’employees who have their Thanksgiving din-ners interrupted because they have to reportfor work at 4 or 5 p.m.

Somehow, as a nation, we’ve lost sight ofthe real meaning of Thanksgiving. We’resupposed to be giving thanks for living in awonderful country, not thinking about get-ting a deal on a 52-inch television set. Bybeing able to concentrate on one holiday at atime, we would be able to keep expectationsfor each holiday season more manageable. With the two holidays being so close, wedon’t seem to be able to relax and concen-trate on being thankful for what we have, rather than set our sights on what we want.Perhaps, taking the stress out the holidays byputting some distance between them wouldhelp us remember the real reasons for cele-brating Thanksgiving and Christmas.
