  • 20Choosing a Secondary School

choosing a Secondary Schoolas a parent, you play an important role in choosing a school that caters to the needs of your child. here are some factors you may wish to consider when choosing a school for your child.

How far is the school from my home? What are the programmes and schemes available in the school? What are the schools strengths? Do the co-curricular activities offered by the school match my childs interest? Will the secondary school provide an appropriate environment for my child to learn among other children with similar PSLE scores? Is the secondary school affiliated to any schools?

Parents should concentrate on building confidence in their children by recognising their strengths and talents. We need to recognise that every child is unique. a good sense of self-confidence, coupled with the attitude of wanting to try their best in whatever they do, will place our children in good stead for their educational needs and future professional growth.

in choosing a secondary school for their children, parents often have had to sift through copious amounts of information.

Parents should first look at the mission and vision of a secondary school and understand the hopes the school has for its students. the next step is to consider how the schools programmes will meet the childrens interests and learning profile.

it is important to look at the total experience offered by the secondary school. this could come from the learning content, for example, the programmes and CCAs; the learning processes which include the activities the school plans for students to achieve learning outcomes, as well as the learning environment which determines how the classroom works and feels.

Sometimes its good to speak to the students of the secondary school, or even the staff. Visit the school if it has an open day. all these will provide a more complete perspective and a better sensing of the school culture and environment.

    The Posting Process

Secondary 1 (S1) option Phase1. once you have received your childs PSlE score, you should choose six schools in order of preference and submit them to MoE.

    2. Bear in mind the programmes and schemes offered by the various schools. You may want to choose the schools which offer programmes that your child will benefit from and which he would be interested in.

    3. Your childs PSlE score should also guide your choice.

Each secondary school publishes the aggregate ranges of the previous years PSlE intake in the choosing your Secondary Schools for admission to Secondary one in 2014 information booklet. these indicate the highest and lowest scores of the students who were admitted to the school. Refer to the range to help you decide on the eligibility of your child. the aggregate ranges of a school can vary from year to year as they depend on the choices of the students and their parents.

Secondary 1 Posting School Posting Phase

Posting results release Phase1. Wait for the posting results. all students will be posted to their highest choice of school based on their PSlE results and availability of vacancies in the school.

    2. if your child cannot get into any of the six schools, he will be posted to a school, which has vacancies, near to your home. it will be more convenient for your child to travel to and from school if he lives near his school.

    Submission of options

You need to complete your childs S1 option Form and submit it to the MoE.

in this form, you should indicate the six secondary schools that you wish your child to be posted to. the S1 option Form can be submitted either through the S1 internet System, accessible via the MoE website, or in person at his primary school.

Parents encountering any difficulties can seek the help of the schools when filling out the S1 Option Form.
