This project proposes to reallocate a brownfield that constitute the urban fabric and the history of Basel, to propose a solution to the problem of housing in town. Around Horburgpark, the housing all developed in the North of the park offers an interpretation of the urban environment, a vision of living in town that draws its strength from the history of the place and the idea of a habitat collective.

The first urban work was to develop the park boun-dary through the continuation of ancient streets and plotting new directions. This work has led to a limited extension of the park to the north. A new mineral site that will support urban interaction, accommodating a market, an outdoor cafe or social activities. At the backdrop of this square, a building creates a boundary, the decor to the city, closing the north side of the park. To the south, a similar building fills the same role. On the ground floor of these buildings, shops and services stimulate urban life in the neighborhood. Crossing the North building the underside distributes stairwells and leads us in a more intimate atmosphere backyard between parallel buildings that recall the history of the place with a typology of housing coupled with open workshops on street.

Children playing in the park, market gardeners on Wiesenplatz, the sound of discussions at the terrace of the CIBA coffee and backyard noise of the artisans deliveries.

The final form of this work is split in two parts that I tried to accomplish with the same level of dedication.First a chronogical study of the use of the proportions and then four study cases around the subject. The example I choose are : the Venice Hospital by Le Corbusier, Congrexpo by Rem Koolhaas, Wexner Center by Peter Eisenman and Peabody Terrace by Josep Lluis Sert.

Here I choose to give you to read the introduction to the second part where I summarize the first part et ex-plain my way of work for the study cases to follow and the question I wanted to answer

Page 15: Sebastien Guidi Portfolio

15

This project for the city of Isle, on the foothills of the Swiss Jura, is an opportunity to revitalize an area that is becoming a commuter town for the benefit of the great cities of Lake Geneva.

By creating a campus of sound design, the project aims to give a new impetus to this city. After a meticu-lous analysis of the village, we have materialized our research by a 1/500 scale model which allowed us to explain our presence and the various inherent urban developments we think would be important for the evolution of the city, well - being of its people and an integration of the project in the village. Echoing the park of the castle, we wanted to create a park for the villagers of the Isle, «In the pond» at the South so coming recreate the historical pattern of the village.

The parcel is located along the Venoge. The project takes the place of a former riding school whose we re-tain the structure of the arena for outdoor activities. The building in three volumes, is intended as a rein-terpretation of the Vaudois farm. After analyzing this very recurrent type in the village, we have developed our own vision of the vernacular system. A strong built envelope, in which develops autonomous and various boxes answering uses crossed by barns that allow villagers from the village to cross to the park.

live at Sainte croix

Sainte-Croix is a city located in the Jura Vaudois. Its industrial past and its altitude gives it a rough charac-ter. The plot of the proposed project is a wasteland oc-cupied by communal services. This project is a dense solution of collective housing in a city where the den-sity is low. Re-interpreting the typology of buildings of the Thorens old factory near, these eight plots fall along the parcel slightly sloping parrallel or perpen-dicular to it subsequent to the context. Creating site, traffic and visual release.

You can access the building from the top side, and enter a large space all lit up by the roof. At Ground services, handicapped accessible housing and student housing. In the storey, a variation of the typology allows fluctuation from 3.5 room apartments to 5.5 rooms. The generous staircase lit naturally brings light into the apartments through a wall of glass blocks, once in the lobby you access from one side to the rooms or across the living room, kitchen, loggia, turning around damp rooms.

The materiality of the building consists of white concrete stained with aggregate from the Jura. Lodges create the rhythm of the facade, while the windows of standardized size mark the elevation of their pattern.

The cube

The exercise of this project consisted of a cubic of thir-ty meter sides, which we had to remove thirty percent of its volume. The games modeling and sculpture re-sulted in a new form, a kind of supporting structure of two forms in equilibrium, facing each other. Then we were to include the program and place the building on the site of the Villa Arson.

The steel structure has rapidly imposed itself, the ma-teriality of the building became a dialogue between supporting concrete structure and structure carried, a fishnet of shimmering metal. The volumes of each vertical side of the cube diago-nals house the stairs, the first volume is low for a libra-ry whose light is overhead, dimmed. The opposite second volume, above, houses the two levels of the museum’s exhibits, they take advantage of continuous light and certain angles of view on the city.

At the top of both sides, an administration and a cafeteria boasts the most beautiful location with a generous light and panoramic views. Lights are often zenith, sometimes interiors, still hidden exterior fa-cades. Only a few openings consistent views over the Bay of Nice to the south, the mountains surrounding the city to the west.

architecture school at capelette

This project is part of the very fragmented neighbo-rhood Capelette. Former industrial area became re-sidential, the idea of the building is part of the tem-plate wholesale compact building that constitutes the fabric environant. It liberates a maximum space for the park in which it is inserted. The project is also an opportunity to redesign the surrounding urban fabric and create new routes which gives meaning to the park, new facades and new traffic.

The school draws from a monolith that is fragmen-ting to combine different programs: student housing, school, library, exhibition. This building was in front on the avenue Capelette with a regular opening once again reference to the in-dustrial past of the area history. The building gradual-ly course from public to private. The main entrance on Avenue of the Capellette becomes a ramp to bring users into the inner courtyard and distribute different parts of the program. Auxiliary administration, libra-ry and showroom are located on the front street in the upper floor. The workshop on the back of the building are facing the park, their double height allow model work, on the upper floor the classroom are lit by series of sheds.

Since 2012, the MAP association take care of the pu-blication and the promotion of the diploma project for the Master in Architecture at EPFL out of the school. The making of the publication take place around a canvas of 17 x 24cm whose the graphism is slightly re-visited each year. It constitute half of the work of the MAP which I take care of personaly.

Furthermore, since three years the MAP comitee who gather a couple of freshly graduated students propose an exhibition of the project in a unique place of Lausanne. After the CFF workshop place in 2013, we made the exhibition in an old supermarket Casino under the Flon. This space was the place where our thematic emerge : Surface(s). This big supermarket work on two floors, tiled, completely white and now deserted since a couple of years. The exhibition separate drawings and model for an abstract result, forcing the visitor to walk around the model to find the ones he would like to see.

We also made a conference eveening around the the-metatic of the diploma and the Surface, animated by Daniel Zammarbide from the office «Bureau A» and Philipp Schaerer, both new teacher at EPFL.
