If you had asked anyone in Johnson City 35 years ago if opening a Bar-B-Que restaurant on the south side of town was a good idea – you would have gotten the same reaction from most. ‘Really? Good luck!’ In July of 1980, two best friends embarked on an endeavor together that by all stretches of the imagination was a long shot. What began as selling sandwiches out of the drive-thru window of “Buc Plaza” convenience market on the corner of West Walnut & University Parkway, over time, turned in to a larger operation.

Later that year, after quickly outgrowing their first location, they purchased the Walnut Street Firehall at auction from The City of Johnson City. The new location was opened with 130 seats, open for

lunch and dinner 6 days a week. The first 6 years of operation were a struggle. Having no previous restaurant experience, Tom quickly learned that there was more to operating a restaurant than they could have imagined. Ultimately, divine intervention, a lot of hard work and several key people along the way have propelled The Firehouse to where it is today.

“Serve great food, with famous hospitality while growing tomorrow’s leaders.” That’s the mission every day at The Firehouse and something the Seaton family is passionate about. “Great food is important, no doubt about it. We wouldn’t still be here today if folks were not satisfied with the food and service. The real difference makers and one of the biggest reasons we love to come to work every day, are the people we get to work with. We have the best folks in town.” said Tom. With over 80 employees and a growing Catering business, The Firehouse is a big operation. A separate commissary kitchen operates with a full time production crew 5 days a week, producing all of the delicious Hickory Smoked Bar-B-Que meats and large quantity recipes like their famous Bar-B-Que Sauces, homemade dressings and desserts.

“35 years is a long time to do anything”, says Seaton. “It would not be possible without the great people we get to work with and our amazing loyal customers. We’re so thankful for a community like Johnson City that has supported us since 1980. We love Johnson City and we’re really excited about what’s happening on our side of town right now.”

Thanks for 35 Great Years!

The loss of a loved one is a devastating experience for any family. During this stressful time, families are faced with many difficult decisions, including the type of final arrangements they wish to make for their loved one. Creating a personalized memorialization and remembrance service is an essential stepping stone on the road to healing; however, many families are simply unaware that they do have options. Snyder’s Memorial Gardens introduced the first crematory to the region in 1978, and we remain to be the only establishment in the Tri-Cities to offer a cemetery, crematory, and funeral home all in one location. It is our goal to assist each and every family that we serve in creating that unique and personalized service to honor their family member. At Snyder’s, every service is crafted and tailored to meet the needs and desires of the family. We offer a full range of service options, with limitless possibilities for personalization.

When Dr. Daniel Schumaier opened his practice in Johnson City in 1972, he be-came the first private practice audiologist in the state. Forty-three years later to what does he attribute his long-standing success? “My philosophy has never changed, treat people like you want to be treated,” states Dr. Schumaier. It is also of high importance to give back to our community. Dr. Schumaier most recently has been a driving force behind the Tweetsie Trail, and has a long standing history of humanitarian service.

In 2006, Dr. Schumaier’s oldest daughter, Dr. Sarah A. Schumaier, began her career as an audiologist in the Johnson City office. “There is only so much you can learn from books, but having the opportunity to learn from someone that is a pioneer in the industry is unbelievable. It is even better that person happens to be my dad.” Dr. Sarah is currently the president of the Rotary Club of Johnson City and was named one of The Business Journal’s “40 Under Forty” as an emerging community leader. She works in both the Johnson City and Greeneville offices.

Both are audiologists who believe in quality patient care and affordable hearing aids. Our belief is no one should have to spend more than $3500.00 for a set of hearing aids. We also are the only audiology practice in our area that installs TV listening systems.

Some may not be aware we have other things happening around our office other than dispensing hearing aids, or that another daughter, Stephanie Summers works with us at EarTechnology Corportation. ETC manufacturers TransEar®, Clik®, and Dry & Store®. We also make from start to finish custom in-ear musician monitors.

Come by one of our offices today for a visit, and hear what you have been missing!

In 1950, war-torn Holland was still reeling from being overtaken by Germany in WWII. Young Auke and Sarah Valk immigrated to the United States that year, under the sponsorship of an American businessman who hired the young couple to be his groundskeepers. His home - and now theirs - was in Kingsport, TN. The two arrived on Queen Mary with $2 to their name. A natural gift for growing, combined with a respect of and love for nature and a willingness to work hard, made the Valks outstanding at their work. As their family grew, they continued to toil and save and eventually were able to construct and manage a small retail garden center and later, purchase it outright! In 1966 they opened the doors to the first Evergreen Garden Center. Dedicated to God, family and honesty, the business continued to grow every year and in 1984, Evergreen of Johnson City was opened on Princeton Road. The Valks' two youngest sons, Tony and Michael, own and operate the full-service garden center and landscaping company today. As the two bring their own now-grown children into the family business, a whole new generation of Valks is poised to someday take the reigns and continue the journey and the dream that began 65 years ago in Holland - a business driven by love of God and family and, of course, nature!

Once Upon a time in 1950Auke and Saartje Valk sailed the Queen Mary from their home in the Netherlands with $2 and the American Dream.Through hard

work and determination, Auke and Sarah created a successful family

based business.Five decades later, the story goes on...

In 1962, Ed Baxter’s dream to serve the commu-nity with the tools and equipment necessary

for home projects, construction jobs, and special events became a reality. Mr. Baxter began opera-tions as East Tennessee Rent-Alls. The rest, as they say, is history. There is hardly a family or business in the Tri-Cities region which has not benefited from Mr. Baxter’s vision at some point in the past five decades. Whether the need was for construction equipment to build a dream home, a tent or canopy for hosting an elegant outdoor wedding, East Tennessee Rent-Alls has become the place to call for all sorts of rental options! Ed Baxter’s son, Jim assisted his father by bringing new ideas and ushering in the next generation for the company. A bounding economy allowed for city growth and expansion which created an urgent need for construction equipment. East Tennessee Rent-Alls met this challenge by becoming the Tri-Cities’ exclusive Bobcat Dealer and Distributor in 1981. Along with this growing demand for machin-ery, the rising number of creative and special events prompted the formation of another divi-sion; Celebrate, which specialized in wedding and party equipment as well as a dedicated costume

department. Ed Baxter continued to advise East Tennessee Rent-Alls until his death in 2001, at the ripe old age of 90. Now, along with his wife Judy, Jim Baxter has taken the stewardship of East Ten-nessee Rent-Alls to heart and continues to pursue his family’s dream. Following tradition, Jim now has assistance from his son, Josh, as another period of growth and expansions begins. Jim’s daughter, Alyson, has recently come on board as well. East Tennessee Rent-Alls now operates in a state of the art facility located at 3711 Bristol Highway, encompassing Equipment and Tools, Parts and Service, and a new Bobcat showroom and service center. Celebrate now resides in its own building which houses a grand showroom. The Baxter family has been involved in the Equipment Rental Business; serving the com-munity for 53 years. East Tennessee Rent-Alls has been fortunate enough to earn the loyalty of our customers and employees alike. Most of our success should be credited to long term employees John Hayes 40 yrs, Leonard Bryant 30 yrs, Nate Buck 24 yrs, Danny Tolley 21 yrs, Alan Moore 14 yrs, Ernest Davidson 14 yrs, Sherry Vassalotti 13 yrs and many others.

Camp Ruff-N-More, a daycare boarding facil-ity for dogs, opened June ‘06 in Johnson City at 605 Wesinpar Drive just off of West Market Street and in Kingsport at 3036 E. Stone Drive. Dog daycare is very similar to daycare for chil-dren. Campers arrive beginning at 7:00 a.m. for a day filled with running, jumping and sliding their day away with a few good friends. After conducting tests for compatibility and ensuring that their shots are up to date, we group camp-ers based on size and personality to provide the absolute best experience. To provide the best overnight experience for each camper we offer a wide variety of choices. We have Junior suites, Cabins and, VIP (very important pet) suites with TV’s and DVD players. In the back we have nearly 4000 sq. ft. of temperature con-trolled, fenced play areas which leads to the large fenced outdoor play area with slides, plat-forms and shaded areas. To take care of our campers paws we have installed rubber flooring throughout and to aide in cleanliness, pea gravel is in the outside play area. The goal of Camp Ruff-N-More is to provide a safe, clean, energetic environment to help your dog stay as young and fit as possible. Some of our campers stay after daycare ends at 6:00 p.m. for overnight camp while their families are out of town. Camp Ruff-N-More is owned by Mark and Karen Durkee and K.J.

and Cory Gulson. The Camp Director is Cory Gulson, the Durkee’s son-in-law. As with most family businesses, everyone pitches in along with the camp staff, including their daughters K.J. and Ame. For a fun, exciting and healthy day, Camp Ruff-N-More is the place for Happy Campers. You are encouraged to come by and check out the camp or call 423-929-7833(RUFF). The camp is open for daycare Monday through Friday from 7a.m. to 6:00p.m. For weekend overnight campers pickup will be available on Saturday 11a.m. to 1:00p.m. and Sunday from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m.

Did you know that Zak’s Furniture started out as a TV and Electronics store? Back in 1959, my father and my Uncle, Marvin Howard, started a joint venture specializing in TV’s and TV repair. This store was named “Bowman-Howard” and was located in the old Peerless Center. During the early 60’s, my father and uncle would dabble into selling other things such as carpet, and eventually some furniture. They quickly developed a passion for the furniture retail industry and decided to open a furniture retail store in Boones Creek and relocated Bowman-Howard to Boones Creek in 1968. After

tremendous success from their furniture retail activities, and seeing where the electronics industry was heading, my father and uncle decided to focus strictly on furniture and merged the two stores into one larger furniture store. I can’t remember the exact date, but this was around the early 70’s timeframe. So essentially, what started as a 10,000 sq. ft. tv store turned into 160,000 sq. ft. of facilities and 14 acres of land. Zak’s is now a regional home furnishings campus serv-ing East Tennessee, Southwest Virginia and Western North Carolina. Zak’s even reaches into Eastern Kentucky and West Virginia as well. The credit for this growth, expansion and success goes strictly to my parents, Nile and Billie Bowman. I am very proud of their accom-plishments. Zak’s recently opened a new 60,000 sq. ft. distribution center on Quality Circle in Boones Creek that warehouses and stocks every-thing we carry. Let’s face it, the only way to offer the best pricing possible is to buy in large quantities. I also wanted Zak’s customers to be able to get their furniture quickly without having to wait 6-8 weeks for an order to come in. For most items in our showroom, you can purchase and pick it up the same day. Also, there have been

many changes in the furniture industry in the past 15 years. Unfortunately, most furniture case goods are imported. There are only a handful of furniture case good manufacturers left in the U.S. today and most operate as importers without doing any manufactur-ing. After getting my feet wet in the furniture retail side of things, I realized that I could essentially do what they do at less expensive pric-ing. So that is what I did. I now import furniture directly instead of going through a U.S. company to do it for me. The result is lower pricing.

Zak’s is now undergoing another expansion adjacent to our main store on Roan St. Zak’s Clearance Center, i.e. Zak’s Attic, has become a prominent place to seek huge discounts on fur-niture and bedding that are “scratch and dent” items, discontinued items, orphaned items and overstock items. We are now relocating Zak’s Attic to a much larger facility on Roan St. so that we can offer even more value priced furni-ture and bedding and offer a much larger selec-tion. The concept will be the same, however, the facilities will be much larger. This new facili-ty will begin construction any day now and will be completed in late fall. In 2008, I moved from Atlanta and received the honor of taking over the helm of all Zak’s Operations. I did this because I was ready for a new challenge and my father was ready for some R & R. I commuted back and forth from Atlanta until 2010, at which time my wife Jennifer joined me as my daughter, Brooke, went off to school at the University of Tennessee. Jennifer and I work side by side every day focus-ing on nothing but customer service and offer-

ing quality furniture at great pricing. We also spend a lot of time and effort ensuring the SleepShop at Zak’s continues to offer the best selection and best pricing on mattresses found anywhere. We are honored the SleepShop at Zak’s has been voted the #1 Mattress Store in Johnson City 6 years in a row. We are also honored to have been voted the #1 Furniture Store in Johnson City two years in a row. And not a lot of people know this, but the furniture industry trade periodical, Furniture Today, has selected Zak’s as one of the top inde-pendent furniture retailers in the nation 4 years in a row. Even though Jennifer and I are proud of these honors and awards, the best award we could possibly receive is the confidence of Zak’s customers generation after generation. My father always said great customer service is what generates repeat customers. I am not as smart as my father, but I am smart enough to know to never mess with that phi-losophy. BTW, my father still checks the thermostats on a consistent basis. I have a great family, a great wife and a great daughter. But I am also fortunate to have a great extended family, the Zak’s Family of Employees. Without them and my immediate family, I would not

be able to offer the best customer service, the best pricing and the best selection on a day to day basis. I enjoy what I do and am thank-ful to be able to do what I do alongside my wife and the rest of the Zak’s Family. However, ultimate success is strictly dependent on the community you serve. There is nothing better than being a family owned business operating in a family focused community.

Thank You Johnson City for your continued confidence and support!

This year we celebrate our 21th Anniversary! Over the past 21 years we have seen many changes in customer needs. For a few years before 2008 everyone seemed to be building a house. Then cus-tomers were doing only renovations that were needed. Today a new trend is happening. RESALE value. As people are now starting to think about selling their homes again, they realize to get the best price and good response there are a few key areas that can make a home more attractive to potential buyers. A house that has had the kitchen and baths updated may be the deciding factor when choosing one house over another, especially when there are several properties on the market. We work with several realtors to help their custom-ers get their property in shape to sell. We not only help customers sell their houses, we help customers ENJOY their home. The kitchen is always the center of activity in any home. Having the area updated and convenient makes time with family and friends more enjoyable. Cabinet Refacing is an excellent way to get a new look. David Salley says, “We offer so many choices and combinations, it is hard to keep up. We can go as simple or elaborate as the customer wants.” With

cabinet refacing by changing the doors, drawer fronts, and cabinet base finish, you can have a whole new look in about three to five days. Kitchen Tune-Up also offers Cabinet Restoration to restore, deep clean and protect older finishes on cabinets for those who still like and enjoy what they have. We also can add many of the convenient accesso-ries to older cabinets. Roll out trays are the most popular, followed by trash bins. Counter tops are also available. Customers range from those who don’t have the time to gut their kitchens and those who don’t want the mess of a complete renovation. “We are a nationwide company and have been the locally owned branch since 1994. We offer solid company backing but can also operate on a much more per-sonal basis. We love working with each customer individually and strive to do what we say we will,” says David. Local service start to finish.

Mahoney's was founded in 1960 by Harold and Irene Mahoney at the corner of Sunset Drive and Knob Creek Road. What started as a simple Army/Navy store, eventually evolved into the premier outdoor store that it is today. In 1970, when their son Dan returned from the Army, Mahoney's began its evolution into the outdoor store you visit today. Dan added categories for clothing, footwear, hunting, and camping.        In 1980, Dan's wife Katie joined the business and took over the management of the ladies department. This addition added just the touch the department needed to make it the best wom-en's apparel shop in the area. In 1991, the area’s largest full service fly fishing department became a part of Mahoney's history. It is now the shop for fly fishermen of all calibers.        In 1992, Dan's son Sean joined the business. A Full Service Medical Facility Serving the Community and Beyond

Robinson Animal Hospital has grown from a one doctor, one location practice to a nine doctor, four location practice in the last twenty years. And the reason for their great success story is their motto: “The Difference is our Attitude, the Proof is our Service.” “That’s who we are,” says Dr. James Robinson. Dr. Robinson came to Johnson City in 1980. He grew up in Monroeville, Alabama, the home of “To Kill a Mockingbird.” He graduated from Auburn University, School of Veterinary Medicine in 1976. As a partner with Mountain Empire Animal Hospital, he was instrumental in starting Jones-boro and Sycamore Shoals Animal Hospitals and in acquiring Jones Animal Hospital in Bristol and Young Animal Hospital in Johnson City. Kim Robinson, Practice Manager, grew up in Johnson City, graduating from Science Hill High School, ETSU and Medical College of Virginia with a degree in nutrition. She is a Registered Dieti-tian/Nutritionist and Certified Diabetes Educator. Robinson Animal Hospital is a full service small animal hospital, including boarding, grooming and daycare. Investing in state of the art digital ultrasound and x-ray, new surgical and dental suites and all new inhouse lab equipment is only part of Dr. Robinson’s commitment to provide the best care and service in the Johnson City and Gray communities. “We love being a family owned business because it gives us the freedom to serve our clients, patients, employees, friends and community as we feel we need to in order to practice the caring profession we have chosen. We not only care for pets but also their owners who care for them. We are an integral part of that circle of care. Offering open and transparent service and involving pet parents who are allowed to be part of the treatment plan has made our open hospital policy unique.”

BedInABox.com is experiencing steady growth in sales over last year and is continuously making a name for itself in the high-end bedding industry. BedInABox.com developed its own exclusive line of mattresses and has introduced several new and unique US-made products to the bedding industry in the past 12 months. Additionally, they have recently moved to a new location in Johnson City that is visible from I-26. Inside the facility you will find a newly remodeled warehouse and mattress showroom that is open to the public. Mr. Bradley is a firm believer in US-made products and the American workers that create them.

Celebrating 22 Years!

3514 Bristol HwyJohnson City TN

423.282.3871

Chaparral is celebrating its 22nd year in the automobile industry, as your hometown Buick and GMC dealership in the Tri-Cities. Freddy and Susan Gonzalez began this venture 22 years ago and with their children and spouses all are still very active in their company. The Gonzalez’s take pride in the fact that Chaparral is a family owned and operated business. Their children Freddy Gonzalez Jr. and Danielle Enguita work alongside them as well as their spouses Monica Gonzalez and James Enguita Jr.

Chaparral is and always has been the heart of the motor mile where they offer new Buick and GMC’s along with a wide variety of pre-owned vehicles. They are a full-service dealership that has one of the premium service departments in the Tri-Cities with certified technicians able to work on all makes and models. It is also the only franchise dealership in Johnson City that has a completely equipped and certified body shop.

Chaparral’s mission is “to provide the very best vehicle service and sales experience for their customers”; which has made them the number one Buick and GMC dealer between Knoxville and Roanoke. Their involvement in the community has been of primary importance over the years and Chaparral thanks the Tri-Cities for allowing them the opportunity to give back to their local community that welcomed them 22 years ago. The entire family looks forward to the next 22 years as they grow with the rest of the Tri-Cities. And that’s really no bull!
