Winter may still be a little ways away, but we wanted to add a few tips to help keep your body prepared when the cold days come knocking at your door. Winter is notorious for drying out your skin and hair, so what can you do to keep your skin moisturized and “happy” throughout the chilly months?

Purchase a humidifier to restore the skin’s moisture levels, and use a good lotion to heal dry skin. The best time to apply lotion is after a shower while skin is still damp, because the lotion will help lock in moisture.

Also, be sure to keep your hands protected by applying lotion or hand cream every time you wash them. To retain moisture, avoid using hot water, and wear gloves outdoors to protect yourself from the wind.

Wear sunscreen – yes, even in the winter. A sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher is recommended, along with lip balm. Watch out for medications like antibiotics or blood pressure pills, which could make you prone to sunburn.

Try to avoid using a blow dryer in the wintertime. While the hot air can easily dry your locks, it could also dry out or irritate your scalp. In addition to the heat created by the dryer, you should also keep your thermostat set to a cool, comfortable temperature, between 68 to 72 degrees.

Protecting your insides is just as important as taking care of your outside. The easiest starting point is to drink plenty of water to keep yourself hydrated from the inside out. In addition, it’s beneficial to maintain a diet filled with healthy oils and fats. You can also try adding some of these foods to your winter diet to help maintain healthy skin:
