If this air compressor fails due to a defect in material or workmanship within one year from the date ofpurchase, return it to the nearest Sears Service Center/Department throughout the United States andSears will repair it, free of charge.

If this air compressor is used for commercial or rental purposes, the warranty will apply for ninety daysfrom the date of purchase.

This warranty gives you specific legal rights and you may have other rights that vary from state tostate.

WHAT COULD HAPPEN HOW TO PREVENT IT

The solvents 1,1,1- Trichloroethane and Methy-lene Chloride can chemically react with aiumi-num used in paint spray guns, paint pumps, etc.,and cause an explosion. These solvents canalso react with galvanized components andcause corrosion and weakening of parts. Thisdoes not affect your air compressor- but it mayaffect the equipment being used.

Your air compressor is powered by electricity.Like any other electrically powered device, if it isnot used properly it can cause electrical shock.

This compressor cycles automatically when theswitch is in the "On-Auto" position. If youattempt repair or maintenance while the com-pressor is operating, or with the switch in the"On-Auto" position, you can expose yourself tomoving parts. These moving parts can causeserious injury or damage, if they come into con-tact with you or your clothing.

It is normal for compressed air to contain toxic orirritating vapors. Such vapors are harmful ifinhaled.

Certain materials you are spraying (like paint,weed killer, sand or insecticide) can be harmfulif you inhale them.

If the material you intend to spray contains the sol-vents listed at left (read the label or data sheet), donot use accessories that contain aluminum or gal-vanized parts. You must either change the materialyou intend to spray, or use only stainless steelspray equipment.

Always unplug the air compressor prior to mainte-nance or repair.

Never use the air compressor outdoors when it israining.

Always plug the cord into an electrical outlet withthe specified voltage and adequate fuseprotection.

Always unplug the unit and release air pressurefrom the tank and any accessories before doingrepair or maintenance.

Never operate the compressor with the belt guardremoved.

Never directly inhale the compressed air producedby this unit.

Read labels and safety data for all materials youspray. Follow al! safety precautions.

Use a mask or respirator if there is a chance ofinhaling toxic sprayed materials. Masks andrespirators have limits and will only provide protec-tion against some kinds and limited amounts oftoxic material. Read mask and respirator instruc-tions carefully. Consult with a safety expert orindustrial hygienist if you are not sure about the useof a certain mask or respirator.

Modifications to the air compressor can causethe air tank to rupture or explode.

Changing the air tank will cause it to weaken.The tank can rupture or explode.

Do not adjust, remove or tamper with the safetyvalve or pressure switch. Ifsafety valve or pressureswitch replacement is necessary, a part with thesame pressure rating must be used.

For Service Replacement use only the motor, pul-ley and belt designed as standard service replace-ment parts indicated in the parts list. Use ofimproper parts could cause overloading of yourunit and electrical supply.

Do not substitute a gas engine for the motor.., thiscompressor was not designed to be powered by agasoline engine.

Never replace the compressor pump with a differ-ent model.

Never increase the compressor pump speed.

Do not fix mount or permanently attach the com-pressor feet. This outfit is intended for portable use(with wheels) only.

Never drill into, weld, or in any way modify the airtank. Do not repair a leaking tank, it must bereplaced.

Never replace the air tank with a different model ora larger tank.

Cut-In Pressure: While the motor is off, air tank pres-sure drops as you continue to use your accessory. Whenthe tank pressure drops to a certain low level the motorwill re-start automatically. The low pressure at which themotor automatically re-starts is called "cut-in pressure."

Cut-Out Pressure: When you turn on your air compres-sor and it begins to run, air pressure inthe air tank beginsto build. It builds to a certain high pressure before themotor automatically shuts off - protecting your air tankfrom pressure higher than its capacity. The high pres.sure at which the motor shuts off is caUed "cut-oupressure."

GENERAL INFORMATION

_'ouhave purchased an air compressor unit consisting ofa 2 cylinder, single stage air compressor pump, an air:ank, air hose, wheels, handle, air chuck and associated:ontrols and instruments.

Your air compressor can be used for operating paintspray guns, air tools, caulking guns, grease guns, air3rushes, sandblasters, power washers, inflating tiresand plastic toys, spraying weed killers, insecticides, etc.

for removal of moisture and oil vapor in compressed airwhen a paint spray gun is used.

An in-line lubricator is usually required for air tools toprolong toot life.

Separate air transformers which combine the functionsof air regulation and/or moisture and dirt removal shouldbe used where applicable.

DESCRIPTION OF OPERATION

Air Compressor Pump: To compress air, the pistonsmove up and down in the cylinders. On the downstroke,air is drawn in through the air intake filter and thenthrough the air intake valves. The exhaust valve remainsclosed. On the upstroke of the piston, air is compressed.The intake valves close and compressed air is forcedout through the exhaust valve, through the outlet tube,through the check valve and into the air tank. Working airis not available until the compressor has raised air tankpressure above that required at the air outlet.

Check Valve: When the air compressor is operating, thecheck valve is "open", allowing compressed air to enterthe air tank. When the air compressor reaches "cut-out"pressure, the check valve "c!oses", allowing air pressureto remain inside the air tank.

Pressure Switch: The pressure switch automaticallystarts the motor when the air tank pressure drops belowthe factory set "cut-in" pressure. It stops the motor whenthe air tank pressure reaches the factory set "cut-out"pressure.

Pressure Release Valve: The pressure release valvelocated on the side of the pressure switch, is designed toautomatically release compressed air from the com-pressor head and the outlet tube when the air compres-sor reaches "cut-out" pressure or is shut off. If the air isnot released, the motor will try to start, but wil be unableto. The pressure release valve allows the motor to re-start freely. When the motor stops running, air will beheard escaping from the valve for a few seconds. No airshould be heard leaking from the valve when the motor isrunning.

SafetyValve:ifthe pressure switch does not shut off theair compressor at or near itscut-out pressure setting, thesafety valve will protect against high pressure by "pop-ping out" at its factory-set pressure (slightly higher thanthe pressure switch cut-out setting).

THE WHEELS AND HANDLE DO NOT PRO-VIDE ADEQUATE CLEARANCE, STABILITYOR SUPPORT FOR PULLING THE UNIT UPAND DOWN STAIRS OR STEPS. THE UNITMUST BE LIFTED OR PUSHED UP A RAMP.DO NOT LIFT THE UNIT BY THE MANIFOLDASSEMBLY. THE UNIT CAN BE DAMAGED.

1. Insert the open end of the handle under the saddle(Fig. 1). Before attaching handle, you may have to pullthe open ends of the handle apart so they fit tightlyagainst the side of the saddle. Looking in from theopen end of the saddle, position the handle towardsthe two bent tabs, on the inside wails of the saddle.Slowly push the open ends of the handle onto bothtabs at the same time (Fig. 2). Continue pushing thehandle into the saddle until the holes on the side of thesaddle and handle are in line.

2. Guide the straight end of each retaining ctip throughthe saddle hole and both handle holes (Fig. 3).

3. Rotate each retaining clip clockwise and press downuntil it snaps into place over the pull handle (Fig. 4).

4. If the handle has excessive movement, it is improperlyinstalled. Check the following:A. Are both tabs inside the handle (Step #1)?B. Does each clip pass through both the saddle and

handle (Step #2)?

installing Rubber Foot Strip and Wheels

L.........]It may be necessary to brace or support oneend of the outfit when attaching the wheelsbecause the air compressor will have atendency to tip.

1. Remove the protective paper strip from the adhesive-backed rubber foot strip. Attach the rubber foot strip tothe bottom of the air tank leg. Press firmly into place.(See page 14 key no. 39.)

_-.The leg bracket on the underside of the air compres-sor tank has 2 holes on each side for mounting thewheels. Place one shoulder bolt through the hole in awheel. Next, push the bolt through the LOWER hole ofthe leg bracket and screw on one hex locking nut. Thespecial locking nut does not turn freely. Tighten thenut firmly until it contacts the leg. See pg. 14. Theoutfit will set level if the wheels are properly installed.

Installing Shut-off Valve

Apply a small amount of pipe sealant (not supplied) tothe tapered pipe threads on the adapter and tighten intothe manifold. Install the swivel connection end of theshut-off valve to the straight threaded end of the adapter(pipe sealant is not required) and tighten this connec-tion. See photo above.

INSTALLATION AND BREAK-IN PROCEDURES

Location of the Air CompressorOperate the air compressor in a clean, dry and wellventilated area. The air filter must be kept clear ofobstructions which could reduce air delivery of the aircompressor. The air compressor should be located atleast 12" away from walls or other obstructions that couldinterfere with the flow of air through the fan bladed fly-wheel. The air compressor crankcase and head are3esigned with fins to provide proper cooling.

If humidity is high, a Sears air filter can be installed toremove excessive moisture, and oil vapor from the air.Closely follow the instructions packaged with the filterForproper installation, it must be installed as close asoossible to the accessory.

Extension Cords

Foavoid voltage drop and power loss to the motor, use._xtra air hose instead of an extension cord.

f an extension cord must be used:use only a 3-wire extension cord that has a 3-bladegrounding plug and a 3-slot receptacle that will acceptthe plug on the product.make sure the extension cord is in good condition.the extension cord should be no longer than 50 feet.

- the minimum wire size is 12 gauge (AWG) Sears #9-83606, 12 g. x 50' tg. ext. cord at your local Sears Serv-ice Center. (Wire size increases as gauge numberdecreases. 10 AWG and 8 AWG may also be used. DONOT USE 14 AWG or 16 AWG.)

Lubrication and Oil

Compressors are shipped without oil. Donot attempt to operate this air compressorwithout first adding oil to the crankcase,

Place unit on a level surface. Remove oil fill plug (Key no.77, pg. 15) and slowly add a special compressor oil suchas Sears 9-16426 or SAE 20-20W SF or SG motor oiluntil it is even with the top of the oil fill hole. (It must not beallowed to be lower than %"- 6 threads down - from thetop, at any time.) When filling the crankcase, the oil flowsvery slowly. If the oil is added too quickly, it will overflowand appear to be full. Crankcase oil capacity is !6 fluidounces. Under winter-type conditions use SAE 10W oil.Multi-viscosity oil, 10W30, will leave carbon deposits oncritical components reducing performance and com-pressor life. Replace oil fill plug.

Grounding instructions

IMPROPER GROUNDING CAN RESULT INELECTRICAL SHOCK. IN THE EVENT OF ASHORT CIRCUIT, GROUNDING REDUCESTHE RISK OF SHOCK BY PROVIDING ANESCAPE WIRE FOR THE ELECTRIC CUR-RENT. THIS AIR COMPRESSOR MUST BEPROPERLY GROUNDED.

1. The air compressor is equipped with a cord having agrounding wire and an appropriate grounding plug.The plug must be used with an outlet that has beeninstalled and grounded in accordance with all localcodes and ordinances. The outlet must have thesame configuration as the plug. DO NOT USE ANADAPTER.

2. Do not modify the plug that has been provided, If itdoes not fit the available outlet, the correct outletshould be installed by a qualified electrician.

3. Inspect the plug and cord before each use. Do not useif there are signs of damage.

ELECTRICAL SHOCK HAZARD. WHENREPAIRING OR REPLACING THE CORD ORPLUG, KEEP THE GROUNDING WIRE SEPA-RATE FROM THE CURRENT-CARRYINGWIRES. NEVER CONNECT THE GROUND-ING WIRE TO A FLAT BLADE PLUG TER-MINAL. (THE GROUNDING WIRE HASINSULATION WITH AN OUTER SURFACETHAT IS GREEN - WITH OR WITHOUT YEL-LOW STRIPES.)

If these grounding instructions are not completelyunderstood, or if you are not sure your compressor isproperly grounded, have the installation checked by aqualified electrician.

Break-in Procedures

Serious damage may result if the followingbreak-in instructions are not closelyfollowed.

This procedure is required only once, before the air com-pressor is put into service.

!. Set the pressure switch lever to the "OFF" position.2. Plug the power cord into the correct branch circuit

receptacle,3. Open the shut-off valve, turn it counterclockwise to

open, opening it fully, to prevent air pressure build-upin the tank,

4. Move the pressure switch lever to "ON/AUTO". ThEcompressor will start.

5. Run the compressor for 30 minutes. Make sure theshut-off valve is open and there is no tank pressur(build-up,

6. After 30 minutes, close the shut-off valve by turnin(.the knob clockwise. The air receiver will fill to cut-oupressure and the motor will stop. The compressor i:now ready for use.

OPERATING PROCEDURES

1. Before attaching an air hose or accessory, make surethe pressure switch lever is in the "OFF" position.Close the shut-off valve by turning the knobclockwise.

2. Attach hose and accessory.

WARNINGIIII

TOO MUCH AIR PRESSURE CAUSES AHAZARDOUS RISK OF BURSTING. CARE-FULLY FOLLOW STEPS 3 THROUGH 11EACH TIME THE COMPRESSOR IS USED.

3. Check the manufactur's maximum pressure rating forair tools and accessories. The regulator outlet pres-sure must never exceed the maximum pressure rat-ing. On this model, a regulator must be installedbefore using accessories rated at less than 125psig.

Compressed air from the outfit may containwater condensation and oil mist, Do notspray unfiltered air at an item that could bedamaged. Some air operated tools ordevices may require filtered air. Read theinstructions for the air tool or device.

4. Turn the pressure switch lever to the "ON-AUTO" position and allow tank pressure to build. The motor wilstop when tank pressure reaches cut-out pressure.

5. Open the shut-off valve. Your outfit is ready for use.

When You Are Finished:

6. Set the pressure switch lever to "OFR"7, Close the shut-off valve.8. Remove the air tool or accessory.9. Open the shut-off valve and allow the air to slow

bleed from the tank. Close the shut-off valve wh_tank pressure is approximately 20 psi.

10. With tank pressure at approximately 20 psi., openthe drain cock and allow moisture to drain. Turn drainT-handle counterclockwise to open.

NOTE

If the drain cock valve is plugged, release all airpressure. The valve can then be removed,cleaned, and reinstalled.

11. After the water has been drained, close the draincock (turn clockwise). The air compressor can nowbe stored.

Air CompressorA clean air compressor runs cooler and provides longerservice. Clean or blow off fins and any other parts of theair compressor that collect dust or dirt. Do not placerags, containers or other material on or against the venti-lation openings inthe belt guard. Adequate ventilation isnecessary to maintain proper air compressor operatingtemperature,

Air Filter - Inspection and Replacement

NOTE

Keep the air filter clean at all times. Do not oper-ate the compressor with the air filter removed.

A dirty air filter will not allow the compressor to operateat full capacity. Before you use the compressor, checkthe air filter to be sure it is clean.

If it is dirty, replace it with a new filter. The filter may beremoved by using a pair of needle nosed pliers or ascrewdriver. Pull or pry out the old filter. Push in the newair filter.

Oil - Checking and Changing

Overfilling with oil will cause prematurecompressor failure. Do not overfill=

Check oil level in the crankcase daily. Remove the oil fillplug (Key no. 77, pg. 15). The oil level should be evenwith the top of the fill hole and must not be allowed to belower than 3/8" from the top (6 threads) at any time. It isrecommended that the oil be changed after every 100hours of operation. To drain the oil, remove the oil drainplug and collect the oil in a suitable container. Be sure toreplace the plug securely before adding new oil Use aspecial compressor oil such as Sears 9-16426 or SAE20-20W SF or SG motor oil (Crankcase oil capacity is 16fluid ounces.) Under extreme winter conditions use SAEb

10W. Multi-viscosity oil (10W30) will leave carbondeposits on critical components which will reduce per-formance and compressor life.

Check Valve - Replacement1. Release air pressure from the air tank.2. Loosen the top and bottom tube nuts and remove the

outlet tube,3. Unscrew the check valve (turn counter-clockwise)

using socket wrench. (7/8").4. Check that the valve disc moves freely and that the

spring holds the disc in the upper, closed position.The check valve may be cleaned with a solvent- suchas paint thinner or carburetor cleaner.

5. Apply sealant to the check valve threads. Reinstall thecheck valve (turn clockwise). Do not over tighten.

6. Replace the outlet tube and tighten top and bottomtube nuts.

Safety Valve - Inspection

WARNING JIF THE SAFETY VALVE DOES NOT WORKPROPERLY OVER-PRESSURIZATION MAYOCCUR, CAUSING AIR TANK RUPTURE OREXPLOSION. OCCASIONALLY PULL THERING ON THE SAFETY VALVE TO MAKESURE THAT THE SAFETY VALVE OPER-ATES FREELY. IF THE VALVE IS STUCK ORDOES NOT OPERATE SMOOTHLY, IT MUSTBE REPLACED WITH A VALVE HAVING THESAME PRESSURE RATING.

MotorThe motor has a manual thermal overload protector, tfthe motor overheats for any reason, the overload protec-tor wilt shut off the motor. The motor must be allowed tocool down before restarting. Turn the unit off. To restart,depress the red reset button located on the end of themotor and turn the unit on.

Belt - Replacement

t WARNING

SERIOUS INJURY OR DAMAGE MAYOCCUR IF PARTS OFTHE BODY OR LOOSEITEMS GET CAUGHT IN MOVING PARTS.NEVER OPERATE THE OUTFIT WITH THEBELT GUARD REMOVED. THE BELT GUARDSHOULD BE REMOVED ONLY WHEN THECOMPRESSOR IS UNPLUGGED.

To Replace Belt:1. Unplug compressor.2. Remove the front of the belt guard by disengaging the

snaps, Insert a flat bladed screwdriver at each snaplocation and pry the beltguard apart.

3. The motor is mounted on a special base. By looseningthe wing nut at the motor hold down plate, the motorcan be tilted to allow for easy removal of the belt.

4. Remove belt and replace.

NOTE

The belt must be centered over the grooves onthe flywheel and motor pulley.

5. Tighten the wing nut until it makes contact with thewasher plus one additional turn.

6. Replace the front of the beltguard.

To Adjust Belt Tension:1. Tighten the wing nut until it contacts the washer, plus

one more turn.

Pulley and Flywheel - AlignmentThe compressor flywheel and motor pulley groovesmust be in-line (in the same plane) within 1/32"to assurebelt alignment within grooves. To check alignment, dis-connect electrical power and remove the beltguard.Place a straightedge against the outside of the flywheeland measure the distance from it to the nearest groove.Alignment is achieved when the other end of the straight-edge is within 1/32"of the measured dimension at thepulley groves.

STORAGE

Before You Store The Air Compressor:

1. Review the "Maintenance" section on the precedingpages and perform maintenance as necessary. Drainth,e water from the air tank.

2. Set the OFF/AUTO switch to the "OFF" position, andunplug the unit,

3. Remove the air tool or accessory.4. Protect the electrical cord and air hose from damage

(such as being stepped on or run over). Wind themloosely around the outfit handle,

5. Store the compressor in a clean and dry location.
