WARNINGTo reduce the risk of fire, electrical shock, injury to persons or damage when usingyour vacuum cleaner, follow basic safety precautions including the following:

Read this manual before assembling orusing your vacuum cleaner.

Use your cleaner only as described in thismanual. Use only with Sears recommendedattachments.

To reduce the risk of electrical shock, donot use outdoors or on wet surfaces.

Disconnect electrical supply beforeservicing or cleaning out brush area, Failureto do so could result in electrical shock orbrush suddenly starting.

Always turn cleaner off before unplugging.

Do not unplug by pulling on cord. Tounplug, grasp the plug, not the cord.

Do not use with damaged cord or plug. Ifcleaner is not working as it should, hasbeen dropped, damaged, left outdoors, ordropped into water, return it to a SearsService Center/Department.

Do not pull or carry by cord, use cord as ahandle, close door on cord, or pull cordaround sharp edges or corners. Do not runcleaner over cord. Keep cord away fromheated surfaces.

Do not leave cleaner when plugged in.Unplug from outlet when not in use andbefore servicing.

Do not allow to be used as a toy. Closeattention is necessary when used by ornear children.

Do not handle plug or cleaner with wethands,

Do not put any objects into openings.

Do not use with any opening blocked; keepfree of dust, lint, hair and anything _hatmay reduce air flow.

Keep hair, loose clothing, fingers, and allparts of body away from openings andmoving parts.

Do not use cleaner without dust bqg inplace. Always change the dust bag aftervacuuming carpet cleaners or fresheners,powders and fine dust. These products Clogthe bag, reduce airflow and can cause thebag to burst. Failure to change couldcause permanent damage to the cleaner.

Do not use the cleaner to pick up sharphard objects, small toys, pins, paper, etc.They may damage the cleaner or dustbag.

Do not pick up anything that is burning orsmoking, such as cigarettes, matches, orhot ashes.

Do not use cleaner to pick up flammable orcombustible liquids (gasoline, cleaningfluids, perfumes, etc.), or use in areaswhere they may be present. The fumesfrom these substances can create a firehazard or explosion.

Use extra care when cleaning on stairS, Donot put on chairs, tables, etc. Keep on floor.

You are responsible for making sure thatyour vacuum cleaner is not used byanyone unable to operate it properly.

YHANDLE ASSEMBLY(STANDARD MODEL)

Before assembling your vacuum cleaner be sure youhave all the parts shown.

Electrical Shock Hazard

Do not plug into the electrical supply until theassembly is complete. Failure to do so could result inelectrical shock or injury.

Remove the screw located just below the carryhandle on the back side of the vacuum.

Position the handle so the cord hooks are toward theback of the cleaner.

Insert the handle intothe opening at thetop of the vacuum.

Align the screw holein the handle with thescrew hole in thevacuum.

Insert the screw so itpasses through theback of the vacuuminto the handle.

Begin to tighten thescrew with yourfingers. It may benecessary to adjustthe handle slightly.

Using ascrewdriver,tighten thescrew.

CAUTIONDo not overtighten.Overlighteningcould stripthe screwholes.Do not operate the cleaner withoutthe screw inplace.

CORD ASSEMBLY(STANDARDAND OPTIONALMODELS)

Make sure thequick releaseupper cord hookisin the uprightposition.

Remove the wiretie from thepower cordWrap the powercord around theupper and lowercord hooks.

TOSTART(STANDARD MODEL)Unwrap the power cord. Plug the power cord into a120 volt outlet located near the floor.

(OPTIONAL MODEL)

1. Turn the quickrelease cord hookto either side anddown to releasethe power cord.

2. Once the cord isremoved, lock thecord into place by ....forcing it into thelocking notch onthe body of thecord hook asshown,

HEIGHTSELECTIONANDSETTING

To select a pile height setting:

Turn off the cleaner. Select a pile height setting bytilting the cleaner back until the front wheels arelifted slightly off the floor.

Slide the height adjustment lever to the correctsetting,

SUGGESTEDPILEHEIGHT SETTINGS

You may need to raise the height to make some jobseasier (such as scatter rugs and longer pile carpets).Suggested settings are:

EX LO or AUTO: very Io pile,

LOW: short or medium pile.

MED: medium to long pile.

HIGH: shag carpet, long pile, plush, scatter rugs.

FLOORSETTING

(OPTIONAL MODEL)TOselect the bare floor setting:

Turn off the cleaner.

Tilt the cleaner back until the front wheels are lifteaslightly off the floor,

Slide the height adjustment lever to the bare floorsefting.

In this position, the headlight is off and the brushassembly does not revolve. Thissetting is recom-mended for cleaning hardwood and tile floors,

DO NOTplace hands or feet underneath the unitwhen changing from the bare floor setting to thecarpet pile height setting. The brush assembly beginsto revolve rapidly when the vacuum is turned on andis switched to a carpet height setting.

AND POWERLEVELSELECTIONHANDLE ON/OFF SWITCH(STANDARDMODEL)To start thevacuum cleaner,slide the On/OffSwitch from theOFF position to theON position. Tostop the vacuumcleaner, slide theOn/Off Switch tothe OFF position.

BODYON/OFF SWITCH(OPTIONALMODEL)

To staff thevacuum cleaner,put the switch onthe top of thebody in the ONposition. To stopthe vacuumcleaner, put theswitch in the OFFposition.

ATTACHMENTS

TWO SPEEDS(OPTIONAL MODEL)To staff the vacuumcleaner, slide theTwo-Speed On/OffSwitch to the LO or HIposition. Use the LO(center position) toclean lightweightrugs. Use the HI(bottom position) toclean most carpetedfloors. Use the OFF(top position) whenleaving or storing thecleaner.

To stop the vacuum, slide the Two-Speed On/OffSwitch to the OFF position.

Identify each of the attachments shown below. :

To Use Affachments:Remove the lower end of the stretch hose from thecleaner by grasping the hose collar, twisting and pullingstraight up.

NOTE:Brushassembly stopsrevolving and theheadlight goes offwhen hose isremoved.

The attached hose endswivels 360 degrees tomake cleaningeasier in everydirection.

Remove the telescopingwand fromits storageposition.

ToStore Attachments:Remove dusting brush or upholstery tool. snap intoappropriate storage location.

Remove crevice tool from the wand by twisting.Lay aside.

Unlock the wand by turning the wand locking ring to theUNLOCKposition.

Slide :the lower wand into theupper wand. Turn thewand locking ring tothe LOCK position.

Place the crevice tool downinto the compressed wand.Snap into the appropriate storage location.

Be sure the unit isturned off. Reinsert the hose fully intothe opening on the lower body from which it wasremoved.Pressfirmly to assure connection.

NOTE:Brushassembly will not turn if hose is not fullyinserted.

Personal Injury Hazard

DO NOT place hands or feet underneath the unitwhen inserting the hose. The brush assembly beginsto revolve rapidly when the vacuum is turned on andis switched to a carpet height setting.

IDO NOTpull the vacuum cleaner around the roomby the hose. Propertydamage could result.

EXTENSION HOSENOT INCLUDED IN ALL MODELS

The stretch hose attached to the vacuum cleanerhas two "J" shaped slots in the end where attach-ments fit into.

The extension hose has two tabs on the end that canbe pushed into the slots and twisted to attach thetwo hoses together.

Attachments and _e telescoping wand can beattached to the other end of the extension hose foradditional reach.

CAUTIONWhen using the regular hose or with the extensionhose attached, the cleaner should be on a solid

PERFORMANCE INDICATOR(OPTIONAL MODEL)When the unit is running with normal air flow, the lineson the Performance indicator are white. Red linesappear in the performance indicator whenever theairflow becomes blocked. If that occurs, check thedisposable dust bag, motor safety filter and otherpossible clog locat ons shown on page 18.

NOTE:Red lines may appear When usingattachments, due to reduced air flow through theattachment.

To correct problem: See the Troubleshooting chaff onpage 21.

Clean exterior using a clean, soft cloth that has beendipped in a solution of mild liquid detergent andwater, then wrung dry. Wipe dry after cleaning.

To reduce static electricity and dust build-up, wipeouter surface of cleaner and attachments.

Wash attachments in warm soapy water, rinse ariaair dry. Do not clean in dishwasher.

DO NOT USEATTACHMENTSIFTHEYAREWET.

Attachments usedin dirtyareas (undera refrigerator)shouldnotbe usedon other surfacesuntilthey arewashed. Theycould leave marks.

Safety Filter

Check theefilterlocated belowthe foam i filter.

If it is dirt,S,wipe it widthaclean, drycloth.

Wash the foamMotor Safety Filter inwarm soapy water,rinse and dry.

Do not clean in thedishwasher. Do notinstall while damp.

Replace the foamMotor Safety Filterby sliding inunderneath the filterretaining strips.

To Replace Bag:

Seal Tab

Fold the safetyseal tab on thenew bag awayfrom the open-ing that fitSonthe dirt tube.

Insert the dust bag ontothe bag holdercompletely by holdingthe bag collar.

Snap the dust bag collarinto position.

Position the bag coverso its positioning tabfits into the bodypositioning tab slot.

Closethe bag coyer.

You willhear a Snap whenthe cover issecurelyclosed.

Clean when

Frequently check and remove hair, string and lintbuild-up in the brush area. If build-up becomesexcessive, follow the steps below:

Align thesquare-extension oneach end capwith the slots inthe frame ofthe base.

Press firmly, checking to see that each end iscompletely inserted.

Check to see that the belt is centered in the beltgroove. Turn the brush assembly with your finaers tosee that it turns freely.

To re-attach the base plate, inseff the four tabs intothe four slots along the front edge of the base. Lowerthe base plate to its original position.

twisting andpulling straightup.

Locate the basescrew whichattaches thebase cover tothe base.

Remove the basescrew.

CAUTION

Place hands on the sides of the base cover so thatyour fingers extend to grasp the lower edge of thebase cover.

Gently pullthe basecover awayfrom the baseand lift up.

Lay the basecover aside.

Base Plate Belt Guard

When brushes areworn to the level ofthe base plate beltguard or when theback-uP beater baris chipped orgouged, replacethe brushes.

To replace brush:Remove the base plate and brush assembly. See BeltChanging section on page 15.

Remove the brush supports and washers.

Push out wornbrushes and endbrushes.

Slide the newbrushes and endbrushes into theslots. Make surenot to reverse thebrush and back-up beater barposition. (SeeBrush Assemblydrawing below.)

Replace thewashers andbrush supports.

NOTE:Newbrushes and endbrushes may beeasier to install ifthey are soakedin warm water for a few minutes before sliding theminto the slots. Do not use oil, Dry thoroughly beforereinstalling.

Reassemble the belt, brush assembly and base plate.See instructions for replacing belt in Belt Changingsection which begins on page 15.
