Frankie Gavin & De Dannan

Frankie Gavin presents perhaps the finest version to date of his band De Dannan. Michelle Lally, described as one with the voice of an angel, follows in the footsteps of all the Irish greats with De Dannan like Mary Black, Maura O’Connell andDolores Keane to name but a few. Barry Brady fromCo. Roscommon on Accordion is such a stylizedperformer, and he too follows in the footsteps ofAccordion-playing greats like Jackie Daly and MáirtínO’Connor. Superb in every way, Barry brings a life to the music which lifts the spirit and gels withFrankie’s electrifying fiddling, and between them, they leave no stones unturned when it comes toexciting jigs, reels and hornpipes at the highestpossible level. Double Bass player Paul O’ Drisceoilfrom Kinvara, formerly of Riverdance, brings a newdimension to the De Dannan sound. A superbBassist, and a skilled Jazz player and backing vocalist, Paul brings another energy source to theband, which lends itself to Irish, Jazz and maybe a touch of Bluegrass perhaps.Colm O’Caoimh onGuitar from Kilkenny is the youngest member; hisunderstanding of musical accompaniment and ability to play like he does, makes him special whenit comes to accompanying Irish Music and Song.Colm, like Paul, Barry and Michelle, are at thehighest performance level yet seen in Irish Music;nothing short of what one has come to expect from Frankie Gavin & De Dannan over the years. Please book early to avoid disappointment.

Launch of Exhibitionby Jim Kilgarriff at ourEaster Snow Gallery

We are delighted to have local artist Jim Kilgarriffexhibit in our Easter Snow Gallery during May-June.

Jim Kilgarriff's inspiration and source of his materialcomes mainly from the costal environment of NorthCo. Dublin. The ever-changing interaction of sea, wind and shore provide a constant mine ofpossibilities. The finished pieces, mainly in acrylic on canvas or paper, explore the detailed weatheringof shell shards and strata patterned stones. Theawesome serpentine shapes, which make up thecliffs at Loughshinny are another source of visualexcitement. Although not landscapes, Jim’s workreflects the texture and feel of the lovely place helives. Small local details, eroded forms which evolvethrough wind and tide on the seashore, echo thegrandeur of canyons and mountains. The patterns, colour and texture of broken shell, stone and rustymetal reflect the rhythm of sea and wind and arelandscapes in themselves. The wonder of God'screation revealed in the small and intimate.

Jim, an Art teacher in Rush, Co. Dublin for 29 yearshas had successful exhibitions in the Daffodil Gallery,Skerries; Belltable Arts Centre, Limerick; LinenhallArts Centre, Castlebar, Co. Mayo; The ClotworthyArt Gallery, Co. Antrim; Rush Library, Co. Dublin.

Quartet

Screening as part of the Bealtaine Film Tour, presented by access>CINEMA in partnership with the Irish Film Institute. Lifelong friends Wilf (BillyConnolly) and Reggie (Tom Courtney), together withformer colleague Cissy (Pauline Collins), are residentsof Beecham House, a home for retired opera singers.Every year on Giuseppe Verdi’s birthday, the residentsunite to give a concert to raise funds for their home. But when Jean Horton (Maggie Smith), a formerGrande Dame fallen on hard times moves into thehome, to everyone’s surprise, the plans for this year’sconcert start to unravel. As old grudges threaten toundermine past glories and theatrical temperamentsplay havoc with the rehearsal schedule, it becomesapparent that having four of the finest singers inEnglish operatic history under one roof offers noguarantee that the show will go on.

“Based on Ronald Harwood's stage play of the samename, ‘Quartet’ is a wickedly comic film aboutredefining old age and growing old with hope;demonstrating how art illuminates life and thehuman spirit remains undimmed even as thebrightest stars start to fade.” BBC Films

John Lonergan:Parenting, thechallenges & the rewards

John Lonergan was Governor of Mountjoy Prison for over 22 years. His philosophy is that change, personal or otherwise, cannot be enforced on peopleand real and meaningful change only comes throughdialogue, consent and agreement. He suggests that the big task for all of us as human beings is tofind the humanity in others and then to nurture it.The more people that are in touch with their ownhumanity the more likely they are to treat otherswith humanity. Tonight, following on the success of his book ‘Parenting, Raising Your Child in IrelandToday’, he will talk about Parenting, the challengesand rewards; covering communication, positivity, afew no no’s, accepting the reality of your child andkeeping your expectations in check.

"He’s a small, slight figure in front of a crowd, but former prison governor John Lonergan has the audience hanging on his every word when hedelivers his highly popular talk on parenting. With a relaxed, at times rueful approach, reminiscent ofthe late comedian Dave Allen, the father of two –and now grandfather of two – holds up a mirror to fellow parents. With plenty of humour and self-deprecation, he shares our foibles and our fears on the “demanding, challenging, responsible, complicated and never-ending” job of parenting."Sheila Wayman, The Irish Times.

Lisa O’Neill

With her album ‘Same Cloth or Not’, Lisa O’Neill wonover fans and critics alike. Her rich aged folk voice, melancholic melodies and brilliant lyrical wit markedher a genuinely unique Irish artist. Her live shows havebecome much talked about affairs with the audiencewelling up one moment, and in stitches the next. In2013 Lisa toured Ireland and mainland Europe withGlen Hansard, supported David Gray on his Irish tourand UK dates and James Yorkston on his UK tour.Nominated for the Choice Music Prize Album of the Year, she performed at the award ceremony inDublin’s Vicar Street and went on to tour Ireland andAustralia. Time Out magazine, Sydney wrote of her:“But as good as Hansard was, the night was stolen by special guest Lisa O'Neill. A folk artist with a voicethat's haunting and broken and big and lilting all atonce, O'Neill makes pain sound pretty damn amazing. And then she goes and sings a song about feedingher Elvis puppet Irish stew. Seek her out.

“…instantly silences the room with her remarkablevoice. Her song craft and performance capabilitiesreally are extraordinary.” - Eamon Sweeney, IrishIndependent.

“O'Neill is real. Her songs poetry. Her gift, of the ages. It's possible she's the most important artist out ofIreland for decades.” - Eamon Carr, The Herald ****

e Songs & TallTales of Jerry Fish

There’s a tendency for the word ‘unique’ to bebandied around a little too freely in music circles, but that’s the only way to describe Jerry Fish’s genrebending style. A highly charismatic performer whorefuses to countenance audiences having anythingbut a good time. Routinely filling the country’sbiggest venues with his travelling musical medicineshows, his swaggering vocal, generous andinfectious smile and that fantastic vaudevillemoustache. Jerry’s aforementioned swaggering vocal has been described as Tom Waits in a goodmood, or Leonard Cohen doing Dean Martin. Smilescome aplenty and witty lyrics are definitely Mr Fish’scurrency of choice, but Jerry’s songs have been sowell crafted that they deserve more than a casual, amused listen. ‘The Songs & Tall Tales of Jerry Fish’ is an intimate, stripped-down, theatre style show in which Jerry performs his favourite songs from a career spanning over two decades.

e Swell Season

The world fell in love with Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová when their song writingcollaboration in the film ‘Once’ (2006) culminated in a jubilant Oscar win. But behind the scenes, where Glen and Mar's on-screen romance becamereality, a gruelling two-year world tour threatens tofracture their fated bond. Filmed in black and white, this music-filled documentary is an intimate look atthe exhilaration and turmoil created by both love |and fame. “Together the three men have delivered a rather lovely study of a duo in a state of dangerousflux. Shot in gorgeous monochrome, the picturefollows The Swell Season about large venues as theycome to terms with a sudden surge in popularity.Hansard has already had some experience, of course. But Irglová seems increasingly fazed by the attention. At every stage door, young people with camera-phones demand digital souvenirs. The cliché “rabbitin the headlights” is close to unavoidable.” - DonaldClarke, The Irish Times

Life’s a Breeze is a feel-good ‘recession comedy’about a family struggling to stay afloat and staytogether through hard times in Ireland. Unemployedslacker Colm (Pat Shortt), his aging mother Nan(Fionnula Flanagan) and his niece Emma (KellyThornton) must overcome their many differences to lead their family in a race against time to find a lost fortune. Who said life’s a breeze?

“Lance Daly’s latest is that rarest of things: a feel-good comedy that actually delivers on its promise.Featuring inspired performances from FionnulaFlanagan, Pat Shortt, Eva Birthistle and newcomerKelly Thornton, Life’s A Breeze proves that, thoughthe country may be “bollixed”, there’s still plenty to smile about in this life-affirming comedy.” -Galway Film Fleadh 2013

Launch of new ArtExhibition by MauraTaylor Buckley at ourEaster Snow Gallery

Maura Taylor Buckley was born in North CountyDublin where she has continued to live and work, drawing her inspiration from the variety of thecounty. She exhibits frequently in Ireland, regularly at the RHA Annual Exhibition and her work is inprivate collections all over the world. Maura’s flair for design was inspired by Professor Romain; hermentor at the NCAD (National College of Art &Design, Dublin). Her pen and ink cityscapes invokethe essence of old Dublin where she was inspired by both the simple architecture of the back streetsand Dublin’s impressive Georgian facades. Her ruralroots are evident from the landscapes and seascapesof North County Dublin, a perennial favourite beingthe coastlines of Portrane. Maura is probably bestknown for her impressive still life work in oil, she isinspired by both Vermeer’s interiors and Chardin’sstill life paintings.

Declan Sinnott

With a career spanning over 40 years, Declan Sinnotthas played guitar and produced music for Irish folkluminaries such as Christy Moore, Mary Black, SineadLohan and John Spillane to name but a few. He wasa founding member of Horslips and Moving Hearts -two of the most influential traditional /electric bandsin Ireland, and spent 13 years guiding Mary Black'scareer, producing the majority of her music. Sincethe year 2000 Declan has been guitarist andproducer to Christy Moore, who was recently namedas Ireland's greatest living musician in RTÉ’s ‘Peopleof the Year Awards’. It may seem unusual for a 60+year old to have released his debut album, or for himto be offered an unsolicited record deal, but this is avery special album and one that doesn’t follow anygeneric patterns. Gradually over the last 5 years,Declan has found his voice and grown into the ideaof stepping up to the mark in his own right. Hecontends that his album ‘I Love The Noise It Makes’could not have been made before now. As much as anything this title describes Declan's passion forwhat he does. Declan’s last show at the SEAC soldout almost immediately; please book early to avoiddisappointment.

Four Men And A DogMusic / Ceol

Four Men and a Dog made a name for themselveswith their eclectic and vivacious blend of traditionalIrish music with a wide spectrum of other genres, including rap, Southern rock, jazz, blues, bluegrass, polka, country swing, and even salsa. Following theirdebut performance in Murphy's Bar, Dungiven, Co.Derry in 1990, they went on to steal the show at theBelfast Folk Festival with a high-energy approach thatcombined furious traditional dance tunes withirreverent new music and inimitable covers. e Hot Seats

The Hot Seats play string band music with simpleintentions: to keep the role of traditional musician asentertainer and commentator alive and kicking.Homer and Jethro, The Skillet Likkers, George Formby,Harry Reser, Woodie Guthrie, Gus Cannon, Phil Ochs,Tommy Jarrell, Arthur Smith, Uncle Dave Macon,Frank Zappa – these are pools from which The HotSeats draw. Their original music is simultaneously hardto classify and instantly identifiable, combining thevirtuosic soloing and tightness of bluegrass, the band-driven rhythm of old time, the jerky bounce ofragtime, and the swagger of good old rock and roll.

While striving to push tradition forward, the bandtakes great pride in their ability to play within a traditional style as well as without. When it’sbluegrass, they bring you back to the 1960′s era ofFlatt and Scruggs or Jimmy Martin; when it’s old-time,they try and channel the Camp Creek Boys; when it’stime for a bit of satire, it’s the images of Frank Zappaor the Fugs towards which they gravitate. Ultimately, the Hot Seats are most concerned with making themusic that they want to hear and playing in themanner that is most entertaining to themselves; thefact that audiences and critics alike have embraced itis almost a wonderful coincidence. The band’s mostrecent full-length release, ‘Live!’ highlights the band’sflexibility, moving between bluegrass, ragtime, old-time, jug band, and Klezmer with ease, injectinghumour and sharp-witted commentary along the way.Do yourself a favour and don’t miss The Hot Seats!
