 Grant  Categories  (all  awards  are  for  12  months):  

•  Discovery  Grants  (up  to  $25K)  •  Fast-­‐Forward  Seed  Grants  (up  to  $10K*)  •  High  InnovaFon  –  High  Reward  Grants  (up  to  $10K)  

   *Requires  1:1  Match  -­‐  $5K  SCTR  funds,  $5K  matching  funds

•  Discovery  Grants  §  Two  cycles  per  year  §  Pre-­‐applicaFon  is  required,  due  by  noon  on  11/15  §  Selected  pre-­‐applicants  will  be  invited  to  submit  full  applicaFons    

•  Fast  Forward  Seed  Grants    §  Three  cycles  per  year  §  No  pre-­‐applicaFon  process,  full  applicaFon  due  by  noon  on  8/16    §  Limited  to  resubmission  of  extramural  grant  applicaFons  §  Requires  1:1  match  as  new  money  (not  from  exisFng  grants/

salaries)  §  Requires  to  provide  the  source  and  amount  of  the  match

•  High  Innova%on  –  High  Reward  Grants  §  Three  cycles  per  year  §  No  pre-­‐applicaFon  process  §  Limited  to  MUSC  PIs  leading  to  substanFal  development  of  IP  for  high  

reward.    §  SCTR  &  CIE  will  provide  consultaFons  as  needed  related  to  IP  and  

commercializaFon.  PIs  may  want  to  request  a  consult  before  applying.  

§  Successful  projects  will  be  invited  to  submit  a  LeHer  of  Intent  (LOI)  to  Center  for  InnovaFon  and  Entrepreneurship  (CIE)  for  a  high  reward  grant  ~200-­‐500K

§  PI  and  invesFgator  team  informaFon  §  File  uploads  based  on  grant  category  (page  limitaFons)  

Ø  Each  invesFgator  biosketch  Ø  Project  DescripFon    Ø  Research  proposal*      Ø  Budget  and  jusFficaFon  (not  required  for  Discovery  pre-­‐apps,  two  

budget  forms  required  for  Fast  Forward  Seed  (FFS)  apps  due  to  the  matching  fund  requirement)

§  Research  design  and  methods  §  BiostaFcal  jusFficaFon  for  the  sample  size*  §  Brief  descripFon  of  the  mulFdisciplinary  team  §  Each  team  members  role  §  PotenFal  for  extramural  grant  funding    

*ApplicaFons  will  be  reviewed  by  a  biostaFsFcian.  ApplicaFons  must  be  adequately  powered  to  provide  meaningful  informaFon  about  the  feasibility  and  size  for  your  planned  future  studies  to  apply  for  extramural  grant  applicaFons.

§  Similar  to  a  NIH  study  secFon  §  Review  based  on  the  core  criteria,  Significance  including  scienFfic  merit  of  the  proposal  is  the  most  important  factor  

§  ScienFfic  Review  CommiHee  (SRC)  –  scienFfic  review  §  ExecuFve  CommiHee  –  funding  decisions    

•  No%fica%ons:      Review  comments  will  be  sent  to  the  PIs  except  for  the  pre-­‐  applicaFons    For  funded  projects  JIT  &  NOA  will  be  sent  to  PIs    

•  Progress  Reports:  Required  at  6  and  12  months,  and  yearly  for  5  years

Scientific Retreats

Goal:    To  sFmulate  new  mulFdisciplinary  research  teams  and  research  projects  by  bringing  together  researchers  from  different  disciplines  around  a  cross-­‐cuhng  scienFfic  theme.      Frequency:    2  scienFfic  retreats/year    Approach:  Themes  are  prioriFzed  based  on  whether  the  topic:  

•  is  cross-­‐cuhng  with  a  large  enough  criFcal  mass  of  local  invesFgators  

•  addresses  unmet  medical  needs  •  is  a  significant  burden  in  South  Carolina  and  beyond    •  will  generate  use  of  novel  technologies

•  Open  to  MUSC  PIs  only  •  Vouchers  up  to  $1,000  are  available  for  services  and  supplies  

for  research  projects  •  Lab  services,  clinical  procedures,  core  facility  services,  etc.  

•  Only  1  voucher  is  allowed  per  protocol  annually  •  A  PI  is  limited  to  1  voucher  per  year  •  Vouchers  expire  one  year  from  the  date  of  approval  •  Most  vouchers  approved  within  24-­‐48  hours  •  Apply  for  a  voucher  via  SPARC  Request:  sparc.musc.edu
