Pilot Project Program Overview


•  To facilitate new & innovaFve clinical & translaFonal research •  To promote scienFfic interacFons among invesFgators & community •  To accelerate processes from discovery, innovaFon to improved

paFent care •  To provide research support for promising trainees/junior faculty •  To support development of new technologies & methodologies

Pilot Project Program RFA


Ins%tu%onal Funds:

•  MUSC -‐ $500K/year •  USC -‐ $200K/year

Grant Categories (all awards are for 12 months):

•  Discovery Grants (up to $25K) •  Fast-‐Forward Seed Grants (up to $10K*) •  High InnovaFon – High Reward Grants (up to $10K)

*Requires 1:1 Match -‐ $5K SCTR funds, $5K matching funds

Pilot Project Grant Categories


•  Discovery Grants §  Two cycles per year §  Pre-‐applicaFon is required, due by noon on 11/15 §  Selected pre-‐applicants will be invited to submit full applicaFons

•  Fast Forward Seed Grants §  Three cycles per year §  No pre-‐applicaFon process, full applicaFon due by noon on 8/16 §  Limited to resubmission of extramural grant applicaFons §  Requires 1:1 match as new money (not from exisFng grants/

salaries) §  Requires to provide the source and amount of the match

Pilot Project Grant Categories


•  High Innova%on – High Reward Grants §  Three cycles per year §  No pre-‐applicaFon process §  Limited to MUSC PIs leading to substanFal development of IP for high

reward. §  SCTR & CIE will provide consultaFons as needed related to IP and

commercializaFon. PIs may want to request a consult before applying.

§  Successful projects will be invited to submit a LeHer of Intent (LOI) to Center for InnovaFon and Entrepreneurship (CIE) for a high reward grant ~200-‐500K

Pilot Project Application Process


•  Apply online via SCTR Pilot Project web page using the ‘Apply’ link •  Required Components:

§  PI and invesFgator team informaFon §  File uploads based on grant category (page limitaFons)

Ø  Each invesFgator biosketch Ø  Project DescripFon Ø  Research proposal* Ø  Budget and jusFficaFon (not required for Discovery pre-‐apps, two

budget forms required for Fast Forward Seed (FFS) apps due to the matching fund requirement)

Ø  Matching fund commitment leHer required for FFS apps

Discovery Pre-application Proposal


•  One page (two pages allowed only for EC inves%gators): •  One page must include:

§  Research design and methods §  BiostaFcal jusFficaFon for the sample size* §  Brief descripFon of the mulFdisciplinary team §  Each team members role §  PotenFal for extramural grant funding

*ApplicaFons will be reviewed by a biostaFsFcian. ApplicaFons must be adequately powered to provide meaningful informaFon about the feasibility and size for your planned future studies to apply for extramural grant applicaFons.

Note: SCTR provides free biostat consulta8ons if needed



•  Early Career inves%gators must include below in the second page*: §  a perFnent senior Co-‐InvesFgator(s) as mentor(s) and include the

mentor/s name and their support leHer/s at the end of the proposal §  a strong mentorship plan §  a Fmetable for becoming independent and a plan for achieving

research independence §  potenFal to lead to independent funding (with a plan to submit K or R

applicaFons) NOTE: Please carefully read ‘Review Criteria for Scoring’ giving especial a?en8on to the ‘Inves8gator(s)’ criteria in order to properly submit an early career applica8on.

*Applica8ons will be reviewed for these criteria.



•  Novel Methods/Technology Core Facility Development related applica%ons must include*: •  potenFal value to mulFple invesFgators facilitaFng clinical &

translaFonal research and supporFng extramurally-‐funded research projects

•  an adequate business plan and cost effecFveness of allowing mulFple invesFgators to use

Pilot Project Review Process


•  Budget: Refer to RFA for details •  Review Process:

§  Similar to a NIH study secFon §  Review based on the core criteria, Significance including scienFfic merit of the proposal is the most important factor

§  ScienFfic Review CommiHee (SRC) – scienFfic review §  ExecuFve CommiHee – funding decisions

•  No%fica%ons: Review comments will be sent to the PIs except for the pre-‐ applicaFons For funded projects JIT & NOA will be sent to PIs

•  Progress Reports: Required at 6 and 12 months, and yearly for 5 years

Scientific Retreats


Goal: To sFmulate new mulFdisciplinary research teams and research projects by bringing together researchers from different disciplines around a cross-‐cuhng scienFfic theme. Frequency: 2 scienFfic retreats/year Approach: Themes are prioriFzed based on whether the topic:

•  is cross-‐cuhng with a large enough criFcal mass of local invesFgators

•  addresses unmet medical needs •  is a significant burden in South Carolina and beyond •  will generate use of novel technologies

Scientific Retreat Format


•  Na%onally renowned external keynote speaker: §  What are the key issues facing the field?

•  3-‐4 plaZorm presenta%ons: What are the local opportuni%es? §  Local experts, different disciplines §  Briefly describe personal research interest §  Future research topic that requires new collaboraFons

•  30 minute “speed da%ng” session: Facilitate interac%on §  Generate new interacFons and new ideas

•  Conclude: Encourage pilot project applica%ons §  Overview of SCTR Pilot Project Program and how to apply

•  Pilot funds set aside for a`endees on the retreat theme

SCTR Vouchers


•  Open to MUSC PIs only •  Vouchers up to $1,000 are available for services and supplies

for research projects •  Lab services, clinical procedures, core facility services, etc.

•  Only 1 voucher is allowed per protocol annually •  A PI is limited to 1 voucher per year •  Vouchers expire one year from the date of approval •  Most vouchers approved within 24-‐48 hours •  Apply for a voucher via SPARC Request: sparc.musc.edu
