A Snapshot of SCOPE SCOPE’s mission is to give economically disadvantaged children from our cities an edge in life

through the summer camp experience .

SCOPE funds summer camp scholarships at ACA accredited nonprofit camps where children benefit from positive, safe, and healthy environments.

Any child who is between 7-16, enrolled in public school, and qualifies for federal free or reduced-price lunch is eligible for a SCOPE campership.

SCOPE requires children who receive camperships to stay in school, promoting education all year round.

Studies show that children who do not participate in educational activities over the summer are disadvantaged come September – SCOPE closes this gap for children who’s families cannot afford to.

A study shows that poor children are most disadvantaged in access to opportunities to develop their artistic, musical, and athletic talents. Summer camp provides the chance to participate in new types of activities.

Since its founding in 1991 SCOPE has sent over 15,000 children to camp.

In 2009 SCOPE’s budget was $1.3 million - all SCOPE camperships are provided through the generosity of our foundation, corporate, and individual supporters.

But SCOPE is Growing with it

A Campership Benefits Two PopulationsThe Campers

The power of a “campership” is clear - in the words of a SCOPE camper, in two weeks at camp a child can learn “life lessons, new skills, and most importantly, how to make the right choices and right friends.”

The camp experience can put a struggling child o the right track, give a child in a desperate situation something to dream about, and provide a powerful network of peers and adults who offer support and encouragement throughout the entire year.

The CampsSCOPE was developed not only to help children, but also as a response to the increased need for funding and support for camps in the not-for-profit sector who have had trouble staying afloat in recent years.

Camps must demonstrate that they provide safe opportunities for their campers to benefit from an enriching, character-building, and educational experience. Only non-for-profit, resident camps accredited by the ACA may apply for participation.
