36. DNA in very small samples of body fluids can be used in forensic investigations. But there may be risks in relying too much on DNA evidence to establish a person’s guilt. Describe a risk that you can think of.

37. Gene therapy may help people who have genetic disorders. Gene therapy targets body cells only and not the gametes (egg and sperm cells). What risk is avoided by targeting only body cells? Explain your thinking.

38. A promoter of a new genetically modified variety of rice stated the following in a letter to the editor:

A genetically modified (GM) rice known as “golden rice” has been produced. The rice is somewhat yellow in colour due to the same pigment that gives carrots and sweet potatoes their colour. This pigment is beta-carotene, which can be converted by the body to vitamin A. Vitamin A deficiency is the cause of 500 000 cases of irreversible blindness each year. By growing the new GM rice and making it widely available to people in poor countries, these cases of blindness could be avoided.

Think of several different groups or individuals with an interest in the issue raised in this letter. Make a table to identify alternatives/perspectives. The table should list at least three stakeholders and their perspectives or viewpoints.
